Daily Puck Drop: Jake Dickert quits Washignton State

- On today’s Daily Puck Drop, Jason “Puck” Puckett is joined by Jim Moore and an emergency visit with John Canzano from JohnCanzano.com to discuss the departure of Washington State Cougars head coach Jake Dickert.
Jim joins Puck for an hour to discuss the move and then Canzano jumps on for the final thirty minutes of the show to give a behind the scenes look to what transpired and what led Dickert to bolt for Wake Forest.
Why did Dickert leave? The move obviously changes how Puck and Jim view Dickert. Is there an understanding to why Dickert left? Puck once again referenced his common line with coaches, they all are Professional Liars.
Now that Dickert is gone and over 20 players are in the transfer portal, including 10 starters. Do the Cougars have enough players to play in the Holiday Bowl against Syracuse? Should the school even allow them to play?
Canzano takes Puck behind the scenes to the departure and why it’s critical for Washington State athletic director Anne McCoy to move fast with a new hire. John asks the question how culpable is the WSU Board of Regents? Did the Regents make a mistake of not locking him up to a contract sooner? Why did Dickert choose Wake Forest, a historically bad football program? Canzano opines that Dickert was just fed up with the system and wanted a change of scenery. Dickert’s abrupt departure calls into question his commitment to the team late in the season. Was there late season collapse a result of he and other coaches not being full engaged with WSU?
Finally, Puck wraps up the show with “Hey, What the Puck!?” College sports have been forever ruined. No turning back. Loyalty and commitment are the way of the past.

Puck you are not alone in your disappointment and disbelief of Dickert’s character. I’m glad you see it like the rest of us do. I am completely baffled how he could act like he has for over 2 years. How can anyone live like such a hypocrite? Ultimately I blame the system but he played right along with it and played the rest of us perhaps through all of it.
I hope OSU already weathered the storm. Our coach is learning how to do the job on the fly. Everyone is coaching a position above where they should. Haven’t been poached as bad this year as last. Nothing is worse than this as a college football fan. Better times ahead for both programs.

When Puck mentioned budget cuts… I could see Dickert seeing the future of a downward trend of revenue, lack of being able to bring in good assistants and just deciding to cash out on a 8 win season. Even though he’s going to a lesser football program, Wake Forest athletic budget is probably solid.

Wake isn't terrible at football like Puck says; they're historically in the mediocre middle of the ACC. There's a bunch of good rivalries with the other nearby schools, Duke, UNC, and NC State. I would say it's at least a lateral move for Dickert.
The Cougs are a AAA baseball team. We develop players and coaches for Power 5 teams. It stinks man.

In hindsight, probably would have been a better idea to just join the Mountain West instead of the limbo of trying to create a new conference. Something to be said for even a bit of stability, and BSU has shown that doing well in that conference can get you to the big show.

Anyone who blames him for leaving is blind to reality. He salvaged a disaster of a season and gave Coug fans some of the most exciting wins you could ask for as a fan. Having the rug pulled out from under you at every turn, (AD leaving, Conference collapsing, coordinators and players poached), who wouldn’t leave for a more stable situation when it’s offered. It might say PAC 12 but it’s the Mountain West, which is a step back in competition. With President Schulz retiring this summer, who knows what WSU’s athletic future is. Wake is a class university. As for the bowl game, UNLV , who lost their coach, most of the staff and key players, just beat Cal. Don’t shoot the messenger!
