First, I have to chime in about the Ingels EC Artist's Edition -- I was lucky enough to page through a copy for about 20 minutes, and it raised my opinion of Ingels' skills a great deal. All his delicate pen lines and brush strokes look far more impressive in this large-size format. Also, Thommy, I'm hoping you can confirm something -- because the Artist's Editions represent full-color scans of the original artwork, I *think* the Artist's Editions (and Artisan Editions) are the only place that fans can see the gray ink washes (used by Wood and some other EC regulars) reproduced as actual gray tones. In contrast, the hardcover EC Library reproduces the art using only black and white, so the ink washes had to be represented by "screens" of black dots, in the same manner used by newspapers to reproduce gray tones in photographs. Consequently, in the EC Library books, it's sometimes unclear whether a black dot pattern was a Zip-a-Tone effect used by the artist, or the printer's attempt to approximate a gray tone. Any thoughts? By the way, I think this provides a great rationalization for EC Library owners to buy all the Artist's Editions and helping crypt-start, er, KICK-start the U.S. gigantic book industry again.
You're right on, the EC Library (and therefore all subsequent reprints) were shot to reproduce in print the black and white line work, so the AEs are the only place to see every little subtlety of the artists' techniques...
Great books! Thanks, as always, for sharing. I happened upon an intriguing Reed Crandall item over the weekend. I was helping a friend prepare his late mother's house for sale, and among her effects was a water color illustration of her done by an artist friend in 1942. No, the artist wasn't Crandall, but on the back of the portrait is the color guide for _Hit Comics_ #23 (August 1942) from Quality Comics with a great early Crandall cover! What a find! It turns out that this lady had worked in the production department of Quality way back when.
So glad you got the Wood one finally! I still need to get the Jack Davis one, and EC potpourri part two. I absolutely cannot wait for the covers one, that is going to be the crown jewel of the entire collection.
Those are beautiful volumes, Thommy. So much detail gets lost when the original artwork is compressed into the comic book format. Thank you for sharing, sir!
That Mad Artist's Edition is THE thing I wish I could take back in time and give to my 5 year-old self. I was bonkers for the Bill Elder and Wally Wood stuff. Still am, actually (I think I've bought that material in at least 5 formats over the years)
YES! That was a glorious day when I saw that first Super Special with the Nostalgic Mad insert! I had been obsessing over the paperbacks for awhile, before I could even read them by myself, but that was the first time I realized Mad was originally a comic book!
Hi Thommy. I see all the artists represented in the Best of EC volumes, except for Jack Kamen. Is there a chance we will see some of his original art released in a future edition?
I'm hunting the Jack Davis Artist Edition book. Prices are all super high now. If you have any promising leads on this book, please let me know! Thanks!
@@ecfan-addict9477 Sold out on their site. Would be cool if you can do a vid flip through of each of those EC Artist Edition books one day. A vid like this would be sweet! :ruclips.net/video/0LXU5oV489o/видео.html
Fun and informative video ... I feel like I'm getting "ground floor" information. (Pun intended.) I just shot and posted the Best of EC Artist's Edition Vol. 1 just so I could ogle each spread, but I found my result lacking for this reason: on video, one cannot appreciate the details and implied process of the reproduced originals... the blue lines, paste-ups, stats, zip-a-tone, etc. There's nothing like studying the actual books up close. Time to win the lottery so I can buy more!
These are awesome! I'd like to get my hands on a Graham Ingels artist edition.

And also giving a small boost to the absurdly large bookshelf industry!

Fantastic 😎

Those are awesome big books! Just subscribe to you. Love the black and white artworks. Thanks for sharing it!👍✌
Catching up on your older videos, my EC covers Artist Edition is in the mail as I'm typing this!
I wrote the intro for that!
@@ecfan-addict9477 I can't wait for it. I'm sure it will be one of the best A.E.s of all time. None of those stupid words covering the art.

Wow! These look amazing. And yes, incredibly unwieldy when trying to thumb through them while filming ;)

Same! I discovered their work in the Nostalgic MAD bonuses, then the old paperbacks... I bought them multiple times as well

THAT COVERS PORTFOLIO!
The full covers AE is going to be amazing!
@@ecfan-addict9477 WHAT THE GASP!
Every page a masterpiece , every page a piece of comic book history.
Any chance you can do an video just on that Wally Wood Artist Edition book? Thanks!
EC and cats!
Sounds like the perfect life!
😸😸😸
Even tho each one of those is awesome if you had to pick one as your favorite what would it be?
I couldn't do it!

Kamen is represented - "Beauty and the Beach."

I popped for the signed one a while back, so I haven't been following prices...I'm pretty sure IDW still has the regular edition on their site
