Thank you for this awesome series! I having been eagerly awaiting each new upload. I was wondering if you have any tips on planting under large, established trees (e.g. maples, oaks)? Or maybe this will be included in plant selection and placement and I’m getting too far ahead! :)

Thank you for watching!! I will touch more on shade plantings and specifically woodland plantings in the next section - but spring ephemerals tend to do well in some of those shadier settings under trees. Its a unique ecosystem under the canopy of trees and simply choosing 'shade friendly' might not get you the longevity you're hoping out of your plant choices. I like woodland phlox and canada anenome in my wooded areas. Trillium, of course, is an all-around favorite but very tricky to grow from seed and hard to find for sale even at native nurseries! Some non-native, but non-invasive bulbs are also good choices under trees as their root structures are small and don't really mess with any other growth down there. Some of my favorites here in northern Michigan include crocus and snow drops. (just never ever choose lily of the valley!)
