Slab of Death there is no escape the relentless NGC details slab

  • Sometimes there is no escape from the slab of death. The surface hairlines designation is perhaps the most unfair slab of dealth. Many world class USA slabbed coins get proper numerical grades but perhaps more ordinary coins are treated too harshly.

    out of the 19 slab-graded coins I had none graded properly not even a single one to make me happy. kills all my collections. I am not a dealer but a private collector, there is a huge difference when it comes to grading your coins.

    PCGS is usually more stringent than NGC. I wouldn't send it to them as it will probably again be a details grade. Coin looks great I'd break it out and keep it loose

Still, I love the discussions on grading. There are a lot of details that go unseen by the unpracticed eye.

    NGC photographs all its submissions, though the photo quality tends to be spotty. But at least it's a free service. I looked at your coin's images (the obverse photo is so-so and the reverse is out of focus) and it appears there are slide marks on the obverse. That's how it looks to me. I don't see a problem with the reverse but as I said, the image is out of focus. Maybe PCGS would give it a low MS grade.

    Beatiful coin, those hairlines are pretty obvious tho. Its hard to quantitatively grade coins with problems, thats propably why they bail out with DETAILS grades. You can keep on resubmiting, but you are basically waiting for graders mistake.

  • @dynomania

    I agree & wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if NGC are fingerprinting their graded coins. So if you break out a slab & resubmit the coin upon the guise of a poor grade they know the exact coin & once again you get the death slab. Like you suggest probably better to send to PCGS.

    Question from a novice stacker/collector....
    What does it cost to have a coin graded?
    What are the benefits? What is the process to have a coin reviewed?

    • @russellb2464
      @russellb2464 6 лет назад

      It's starts at like $30 but takes forever. If I get one graded that I have a bunch of cash tied up in I'll do an Express service and it's like $60 for a 48 hr turnaround (supposed to be anyway) You can do a walk-through and get it shipped out next day but it's like $100 or $125 plus 1% of market something like that never done that. There's an awesome video on ngcs channel that follows a coin through the grading process that is super informative you should check it out.

    • @philippayne4951
      @philippayne4951 6 лет назад

      The object is, that the coin has a correct condition grade that nobody can argue with. So that you can buy the coin, and know that it has been correctly graded. But sadly this is not the case, they make lots of bad mistakes, and the collector pays for their blunder.

  • @Dr.G
    @Dr.G 7 лет назад +1

    This is a tough comment to make, but if it were me, I'd leave it in the slab and display/sell it as a coin with surface hairline scratches. Because it appears that is what it is. I know it's tough to buy an expensive item on ebay and have an undisclosed problem with it. These top rated grading services exist for just that reason, to disclose the true condition of an item. For a coin to be misgraded the first time through is possible. For a coin to be independently misgraded a second time for the same problem is just not reasonable. I can't see the hairlines in the video, but if you sold it to me and didn't disclose the fact you sent it two times for grading and twice it was graded with a details grade I would be upset. Sorry Numi.

    Numi old chap your persistence is to be commended! Quite an expensive endeavour in search of satisfaction. It's unfortunate that NGC does not accompany their coin grading with a written evaluation somewhat similar to jewellery appraisals. I said that before. While you were there perhaps you should have insisted on an explanation for the grade given especially if you inspected the coin meticulously under magnification and decided it deserved a higher grade. I suspect if you mentioned to NGC it was the second time the coin was being graded by them and in a short period of time that they simply pulled the file/record and assigned the same grade... most likely! It has been said PCGS grading methods are more stringent than NGC & could further increase your futility. I rather not think what that coin would ultimately cost.
