The best part of being a SSgt is being that much closer to being a Gunny.
8yrs later🤣
@@62nichols94 it's only 6 years time in service 3 years time in grade.
@@62nichols94 facts.
@@TraceyAllen it ain’t guaranteed someone gotta step up or stand down the worst thing that can happen is they give the rank to the newbie😂
Thus they wear cool hats! 😂
Congratulations on the promotion. I agree that E-6 is a tough rank because you aren’t a “kid” anymore. Parallel to that, my dad used to tell me that Major was the worst rank for officers for similar reasons. He said the pay was good but he lost all of his friends. Semper Fi!
Strips, medals doesn't matter any person(s) on the battlefield is not a kid, in any shape form or fashion only rank, medal is most important is coming back ALIVE and not in pieces, talk about stress (PTSD)....
Congratulations! The fact you are stressing about being promoted means you are a good leader.
Word 😎✊🏽
Its definitely important to have goals, and aspire to fill higher billets/responsibilities so that your command thrives, but how exactly does stressing about personal progression make you a good leader?
@@mark_338 it means you’re actually stressing the importance of your duties/responsibilities/obligations as a leader, not just blowing them off and letting shit roll downhill to your subordinates. I think he’s basically saying that being stressful about getting promoted/picking up an important duty in the military is a good sign as it shows you care about doing very well in your new position. A shitbag NCO probably wouldn’t be as stressed since they fully expect to hit their new rank and then just cruise from there, doing the bare minimum and such
You got this Devil Dog! I wish I would have made it that far. Best wishes my Marine Brother.
Congrats. Great video. Guys need to hear from men like you the ins and outs of making the Marine Corps a career. Hopefully, with the commandant's new push more quality Marines are retained.
Agree and congrats again 👏
Wow! A comment from Jamesons Travels?! Nice! I feel like in Marine Corps RUclips land that means you made it lol.
Always good content in this channel tho for real. Congrats on the promotion. SSgt absolutely WAS the worst rank but I spent 6 years as one and learned so much in the process.
-MSgt, 17 years and counting
This is what brotherhood is all about i watch your vids on my journey and this gentleman as well. I just passed MEPS yesterday and swore my oath. So excited to start my journey as a future United States Marine. Thanks for all the help from both of you gentlemen.
I was a boot lieutenant and I had a staff sergeant platoon sergeant. He was the finest Marine ever met and a great mentor to a wet behind the ears lieutenant. I never knew that is what he was doing he was such an artful mentor.
Congratulations you are now a mentor to enlisted and young officers.
Congrats man! My old CO used to say, "Just be a good dude and put in the work, and lots of good things usually come your way"
Respect your opinion but it wasn't that way 20 years ago. The sh*t that E-5 and below went through compared to the sh*t that SSgt's went through was night and day. You know what's worse than being a SSgt on duty? A corporal on duty, or on a working party, or pulling pits for officers/ SNCOs. Congrats on the promotion... don't feel too down on yourself, SSgt is a well respected rank!
😎🥰👍🏽🙏🏽✊🏽
And the church said AMEN!!! Anything E-4 and below in the late 80's-early 90's was pure hell. We were literally treated like ladders, buckets or some tool you would use frequently.
I think he meant today.
Very well said!!!! E-6 and up has its privileges for sure. Plus E-6 and up always shit on my plans as an E-4/E-5 when I wanted to train my squad and build their tactical proficiency as grunts. Then they would turn around and ask me why my guys didn’t know everything! Smh
USMC grunts 1986/97 he must be speaking of now days. When I was in E5 Sgt was a long tedious time in grade process 5 1/2 to 6 years to get promoted to E6 SSgt. Below zone above zone selection boards. In them days Sgt had to do a lot of heavy lifting for a long time. Semper Fuckin Fi...
Army guy here. For me, being a corporal absolutely sucked more than any other rank (granted I haven’t hit my 6 yet). But in the army as a corporal, you’re expected to take on the roles and responsibilities of a SGT however you’re still paid, and often times looked at by your joes as just a glorified specialist that doesn’t have to beat those responsibilities.
Wow, and I worked with the army a lot….
The Marines are always pushing more shit down to the junior ranks. More responsibility to the ranks.
In a few of the MOS’s I held during my career, a 1Sgt in the army did the same as a Cpl/Sgt in the Marines….
That’s because we used to go to Ft Bragg a lot to do some training with the army.
Ok, so maybe I’m old…I’m talking in the late 1990’s to 2002’ish.

@@MountaintravelerEddie marines had cpls and SGT’s in charge of company’s and mentoring company commanders?
@@MountaintravelerEddie I know what you mean as an E4 in the Marines a few times I was in charge of E5s and E6s because company 1st Sgt didn't trust them at times but for whatever reason trusted me. My reenlistment package came back as a tier 2 from the career planner and whenever it came time for the 1st Sgt to sign he looked at it and said a tier 2 how TF is that possible? I said pros and cons he said I'm going to get this fixed you ain't a tier 2 then they recommended my package tier 1.
I concur I was never a corporal but I seen exactly what you are saying
I agree with Corporal in the army especially if your frocked. I loved being a SSG in the Army, although SSG in the Army is more of a Sgt role in Marine Corps. The thing more important than rank is always environment. Especially in the Infantry. If you have good TLs and a good relationship with your PL then things fall in place and can be very rewarding. As a SSG I served in many roles from Squad Leader to PSG to even PL and the key was always forming good respectful relationships. A toxic PSG can absolutely crush the effectiveness of a platoon more than any other position imo.
The worst rank is being a non promotable Sgt that's close to hitting ending limits or that's been passed over, because you'll be expected to do all the duties of a SNCO, billets, duty(staff nonfire, RSO, OOD, section leader) but the Corps kicking you to the curb because you didn't do a b billet
im an e5 with e8 experience....ill take 6 anyday 😒
Ouch….
I got months left until I get promoted to civilian and holy fuuuuck am I so excited 😆
Congratulations on your promotion SSgt. My worst experience was as a Lance Corporal. My MOS didn't promote to corporal because it was closed out during my time in. At the beginning it was fine but as I got to my 3rd year in we got a retread that lat moved into our MOS from supply. He had been out for three years and came back as a LCpl. I had to train him on how to do our job and inventory our equipment. I was a 0621 and 0622 radio operator. He picked up Cpl and Sgt in the next few months because he was just a 0621. He didn't really know the job that well but was promoted to our section leader. One day he questioned the way I was doing my job and tried to micromanage me. I felt disrespected because I was the one that trained him. I was one of the most experienced at my job if not the most in that unit. Having someone degrade you because they have a power trip makes it hard to do your job with a smile like I was used to. Fast forward I was placed in charge of a field training exercise because I was the senior enlisted in my MOS even though I was only an LCpl. A Cpl was put in charge of us on paper because we needed an NCO to technically be in charge. He ended up being someone TAD to us and had not experience at all with radios which didn't matter, I was running it. I trained the Cpl how to set up the gear but for the most part he was in the COMM tent. I was the one making the radio watch schedule for the vehicle mounted radios. When it was time for chow I would relieve the one on radio watch and send everyone under me to chow. I would go after they came back. This was the how it went for the whole operation. On the second to last day the Cpl saw everyone coming from morning chow and started to rip them for not being at their post. I heard this and came out of the vehicle to defend them. He tried to say that he was in charge and that we all had to do what he said including me. I express myself to what kind of leader I thought he was and made him understand that I was the real one in charge because he hadn't been part of what we were doing during the whole operation even though I showed him how to set it up and also explained that he still didn't know how to troubleshoot our equipment. He walked away. Later he tried to take credit for my success in front of the battalion commander but a PFC that I was in charge of was there too and told the truth. There are several times like this where I was ignored, disrespected, lied about and overworked because I was a LCpl. Several times I had to do things my own way to prove I was right to get the job done and took heat from SSgts and Sgts until they realized they were wrong and I was right. I had great teachers on all levels that taught me how to be a great leader and be very proficient at my job. They prepared me in a way so that I didn't feel stress when a new task was in front of me. One day I was returning from the MEU and I had literally just walked into my old unit after being away a year and a half. I was Cpl by this time. A Capt walked in behind me and asked who was in charge. Everyone pointed to me. I didn't know all the officers, staff NCOs and Sgts we're all out doing separate training exercises or things that required them to be there. I didn't hesitate and asked how I could help him. After getting that info I asked him to give me a few minutes to see what I could do. I went to my unit to get a status and then helped the Capt with what he requested with no problem. Remember no matter what rank you are continue teaching everyone underneath how to be a good leader and how to do their jobs. By doing this it will make your job as a SSgt easier. You're Marines will break their backs for you to make you look good and they will respect you the same way I respect the SSgts that were hard on me and taught me how to be a great leader. Good luck on your career and I wish you the best. Semper Fi
Congratulations on you promotion! Semper Fi!
Congratulations on the Promotion. I'm a Marine SgtMaj and I never really thought about it but you may be right on the worst rank. I will say this, GySgt was the best rank I ever held. Everywhere in the Corps the Gunny is the man. Semper Fi Devil Dog.
Congratulations. I love your videos. USMC 1991-2018.
YO!!! STAFF SERGEANT WE GOT PROMOTED ON THE SAME DAY! I GOT PROMOTED TO LANCE CORPORAL ON DECEMBER 1ST!
I only made it to E-4 during my time in the FMF but can totally see why being an E-6 would be rough. Going from being part of a weapons team or rifle squad or platoon leader to a desk job would’ve been traumatic for me. That’s my experience with E-6’s.
As my grandad always said, “hang in there like a hair on a biscuit!”
Same. Didn't wanna go through blue side again
Just passed MEPS yesterday. Excited for my journey as a future United States Marine. Thanks for all the help and info you put out in your channel. People who care ate watching and I personally appreciate it. So thank you sir!
Good luck from a marine to a future marine💪🏽
Congratulations. My best is
2nd class Petty Officer. Navy HT
Kinda makes me glad I got out as a Sergeant with one year left before being in zone
Congrats on picking up rank!! You have one of the best Military channels out there. I would agree with you, as I saw it in action on multiple Amphib’s throughout the Fleet and on the beach. Keep up the great videos!!
The marine Corp came to my house on veterans day and my mom was working at home and I was gone and my mom told them I wanted to be a medic or a corpman and that I wouldn't be interested because they don't have what I want. They then said they have their own medics and said they don't use the navy corpman at all. So once I heard that the marine Corp instantly was dropped as a branch to go into mostly because I don't trust that recruiter since be lied right off the bat
You picked up! Congratulations my guy!
Can’t wait to be in with quality Marines like you!
Ssgt is fun. But gunny is more fun. I remember some gunnies after getting promoted finding some low rank higher ranking ahole they didn’t like to give him a lesson in not being a higher ranking ahole just to spend the night in the brig and lose a stripe. That changed after the early 80s though.
Get your degree and go OCS. You would make a great officer.
Terminal SSGT! Haha. Congrats and keep your head up hard charger. Staff Sergeant (E-6) is nothing to be down about. Just 4 more years until Gunny right? And you may even be the Company Gunny at that. What a lax job right? Haha. Seems like you're getting promoted pretty quickly. Any meritorious proms? What's your MOS by the way?
Congrats on the promotion brother!
Congratulations Staffy! Welcome to the other side of the veil. Find your groove and find your style. Best piece of advice that I got was "never work for a fitrep. Do your best to train and take care of those in your charge."
Congratulations to you. I admire your honesty.
Congratulations on your promotion and you got this 😎✊🏽🙌🏽
Nice job, brother. Keep on moving up! 🤘
I’m a E-3 in the Army your right we have 0 responsibilities. Except do what your told. But hey that SSG pay hit different.
Congrats on the promotion brother. I do agree with you in regards to SSgt being the worst rank in the Marine Corps. It's like your are a slick sleeve allover again but with responsibility and a bunch of shit duties.
I feel what you are saying about training your Marines to replace you and be better than you. I sacrificed so many training and certification courses to ensure the success of my Marines. I just passed along the training that was giving to me. As a LCpl, I had a Sgt that took me under his wing because he saw that I was a stronger leader and positive influencer than his NCO's. Had a 1stLt get mad at me because I declined his offer to get me into the Naval Academy to become an Officer. The respect I have for the enlisted ranks go beyond any rank that one could wear so long as the man behind the rank upholds the values.
You uphold those values and traditions of our beloved Corps and that is why you are blazing the trails you are and making the strides you are.
Again, many congrats on the promotion. I wish you continued success and continue to keep it real and always put your Marines first.
Semper Fi!!!!!
Man, I just picked up Cpl in October. Now I feel like a boot
Congrats on Staff Sergeant nonetheless. From this 0311 88 to 92.
Congrats, you got this man!! 💪🏽
As a retired Gunny married to an Officer, you need to retire as an Officer. You joined for one reason, you’re doing 20 for another. Enlisted retirement pay is trash compared to what Officers get.
Facts! Only way I would of stayed in was commissioning, unfortunately last year was not the best, so I decided to get out and enjoy my time out in the civilian sector.
Congratulations Brother
Congrats staff sergeant! Ohhh rahhh
I wholeheartedly agree!
I’m an E6 in the Air Force and I can confidently say E6 is the hardest rank to have in the military. You have all of the responsibility of a SNCO without being a SNCO. I’ve been an E6 for four years, and these have been the most stressful and challenging years so far.
Congratz Bro! I'm still waiting on points to drop so I can pick up Staff. Army BTW and on the island!
Congrats my man!! I was a Corporal but I tried doing what I liked about my NCOs and whatever I felt as a junior marine I’d want in an NCO. You’ve seen it at the lower levels and you’ll crush it.
Congrats Marine. I left as an e5 at the end of a 4 year enlistment.Honestly do not know if 1. I would have ever gotten promoted if i had re enlisted and 2. If i would have made a good e6 if i had. RVN was winding down and the corps was resizing as a result.
Congratulations SSgt. Wish you all the best in the years ahead!
Congratulations, SSgt! Remember that nobody expects you to memorize everything Marine Corps related. You just need to know where to find the answers and fortunately the Marine Corps has a reference, manual, and order for almost everything
I’m out now but this helps me appreciate my SSgt (the one I had when I was in) more by watching this, I didn’t really understand THAT side of things
Great video
Congrats bro!!!
Go for Warrant Officer bro. Get as much out the Marine Corps if you plan on being career.
Your family deserves more, not just you. So go for it!!!
Semper Fidelis
'grats! Gonna be outstanding!
If the stress gets you down, compensate by increasing your Jazz doseage--should keep your nerves cool and well-lubricated
For the Navy it is easily the E-6 too. You get all the stress of having to operate at Chief (E-7) level, none of the pay or respect. Then the chiefs just dump all over you. Plus all of your junior sailors. Yup. Definitely being an E-6
Navy different. A first class isn't in the same category as Chief, they can't even eat in the same mess area as Chiefs. In the Corps, a SSgt is in the same category as GySgt's.
@@grrrrrrr6492 yeah that’s what I’m getting at.
Literally in the same boat as you pinning on in February. Good to know im not alone lol
Duuuude, you promote CRAZY fast! Congrats man!
Congratulations SSgt,I’m sure you are going to do fine and be an Exemplary SSgt.
I always wanted to join the Corps. I am a Canadian. I was 6’0 135lbs soaking wet 18 years old. I couldn’t left a 2-4. Lol. Later I found out that foreigners don’t progress through the rank structure. And a limited to what they can do.
But as life has taught me in any type of profession in the Marine Corps or in the Business world. There are people that will screw you over. Make friends. Treat people as you want to be treated. Earn respect. Take the worst and make it the best. The Corps will see how you improvised, adapted and overcame! “Learnt that line from Heartbreak Ridge” lol. But being 25 you are very mature and if you are already a staff and make a full career of The Corps. I could see you fulfilling the rank of SGTMAJ of The Marine Corps. The number one Enlisted man in the Corps. If you want it bad enough. You’ll know what to do. Please see above movie quote from Heartbreak Ridge.
All the best in your career sir. I wish you all the best and every opportunity to advance yourself and others around you.
Congrats. One day at a time; One challenge at a time!
Ooorah SSgt you're going to be a great Staff NCO!
Congrats on promotion and welcome to the bottom of the Staff ranks.
Hope that rocker doesn't affect this awesome channel. My EAS was in 2010 and this channel is the first Marine Corps related thing I've been interested in, in a long while. You seem to have the type of attitude that I hoped marines around me would have. Just the right amount of seriousness with a dash of fuckery(at the right time and place of course). Yat-Yas
Congrats to you man, I don't want to be a staff nco. When I hit sgt, I want to submit my mecep package.
I served 21 years in the Marine Corps and I made SSgt. at about 11 years in... I was already holding a SSgt. Billet in my M.O.S. as Howitzer Section Chief so I was already familiar with the added responsibility of that rank of Staff Sgt. i Loved being a SSgt. it was excellent there is no such thing as A BOOT SSgt. i held that rank in high esteem and honor I did a lot of additional duties as a SSgt. Platoon Sgt. duties.. Color guard duties. Trainer. for MCMAP as well as P.M.I/ range coach duties.. it was a lot of leadership responsibility but I gravitated to it very easily.
I was recommended for promotion to Gunnery Sgt. but I made the decision to exit service at 21 years IN the Marines my body was getting beat up from deployment.. Martial arts training and Field Artillery specific training as well as the Constant P.T. pounding my knees and back.. I always ran a high first class PFT in the upper 280's when I saw that start to decline to the mid 260's. even though I was still training hard that's when I knew my body was telling me it's a wrap and my military career came to a halt after 21 years of honorable service. and I can say I loved being a SSgt. / E-6. it was my favorite rank I held. good video dude. and Semper-Fidelis. SSgt. Calhoun 0811. (ret)
Congrats Devil Dog picking up SNCO is a huge milestone in an enlisted Marine’s career. True it doesn’t get any easier but you get what you put in and so far you’ve shown to be worthy of the rank. Keep going stay hard charging and motivated, and always remember one of the best form of leadership is servant leadership…a very wise and salty MasterGunny once told our platoon that during OIF 04-06. Stay frosty happy holidays and Semper Fidelis

That's true I never thought of it like that.
Congrats on picking up that first rocker! Keep the motivation coming and Semper Fi!
Welcome to the club.
Congrats on Staff! Well deserved brother
I think if someone plans to make the US Military (enlisted) a career, they need to do good as an E-6 (STAFF SGT- USMC) in order to go up in rank either as a Gunny Sgt (E-7), Warrant Officer or even Commissioned Officer. Its the make or break point, you have to start thinking "office politics" in the military at this rank and also be the mentor of your junior personnel and know your job WELL, similar to the US NAVY where an E-6 (Petty Officer 1st Class) has to perform and shine in order to make higher rank (Chief- E-7 and up, Warrant Officer and Commissioned Officer), otherwise they would end up being that burned out, tired, stressed out, 40 year ish year old, 19 and a half year time in service, E-6 whose ship set sail years ago to promote and is just waiting for year 20 to get back at the service, getting all their benefits like high VA percentage disability, GI Bill Stipend and possibly even pursuing a civilian career (Govt Contractor) where hopefully, their former bosses are now working under them in the civilian life.
Congrats Chief can't wait to you see Gunny Thank you for tell them about that Lance Criminal
Try being meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant the day before your 21st birthday, less than 3 years in, 5’6” 138 lbs and looking like your 16. Put those shoes on and walk into a Staff NCO club. It was intimidating and hilarious at the same time.
First off, Good on you brother for the disclaimer! Second you are completely correct, when I was a SSgt, I never got a good night sleep because I was always waiting for That Call " SSgt, I f&^$ed up". For me Cpl was by far was the best, some authority/responsibility but also able to shrug and say I didn't know. Semper Fi!!
It sounds like you found your calling as a career Marine. I look forward to seeing you promoted to E9 either Master Gunnery SGT or SGT Maj. maybe SGT Major of the Marine Corps. I was stationed at Camp Horno Camp Pendleton in 1977 Kilo Co 3/1 weapons Plt when Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph F. Dunford was a boot Lt.
Bro, you are not lying. The one month I've been a SSgt, I've been slated for more things than I have been the whole last year as a Sgt.
Congratulations to the SNCO Corps. I agree with your assessment... Sgt was fun, SSgt does seem like you are going 45 in a 55.
GySgt will be awesome, so hang in there killer!
I went the route of MSgt, which just seems to be SSgt v2.0 since you are supposed to be calm and unsurprised and just sip your coffee when the duty notifies you that LCpl Jones was found with a cache of weapons grade plutonium in his barracks room.
You know.. the ole "LCpl with weapons grade plutonium in their barracks room".
Congratulations SSGT Backbone is getting stronger
Congrats bro!
It is a tough thing to endure. The gunk falls on you. Does not smell so
good.
Can you do a vid on the tropical radio communication mos for me
At least you get to use your pov to go to the range now. That's a plus.
Congrats on SSgt!!!!
Congrats
Same way in the army ! Very stressful position, always ncoic when the e7's don't want to do it.
Congratulations on picking up SSgt. How long have you been in?? I did 4 years and it's my second biggest regret in life was getting out. I told my better half that if I picked up Sgt. In my first enlistment I would stay in, I got out in September and if I had stayed till Dec. 1 I'd picked it up. But we can always look back and say I wish I had done this or that but we can't change it now. Anyways keep up put out these good videos for these younger people. SE.per Fi from an old Marine
We got promoted same day brother congrats
Remember this Channel first started under 7k subscribers its grown since then let's get it to 100K
Totally agree bro just made 1 year in the rank of SSgt and I miss being a Sgt. It’s been rough.
Being an HM1, was about the same. The only good thing was when I was with the air wing….
I loved being a Sgt in a E7 billet, best of both worlds….. well maybe the pay would have been nice too 😂😂😂
Hey Sempi oohrah congrats on that promotion keep going I'm a Major in the Corps
Congrats SSgt!!
Congrats!!!!!!
For Army...E6 was definitely a challenge. You definitely were not a senior NCO which was clear but you also were one of the kids anymore. As a great as sergeant is you're still brand new to the NCO Corps for us. When you make staff that's when it looks like you might know a thing or two, even if you don't.
Congratulations on Ssgt rank man. 👏 you definitely made it farther than I would've been.. but then I was in Arty.. and everyone knows what happened there. Anyway congrats again. We need more Marine Corps leaders like you 👍
Be smart bro...do a B-Billet by the time you get back out to the fleet you'll be a Gunny. The Corps knows they got you @ E-6. 😂 I learned early they dangled that over my head..I was like ✌🏾. (Post 9/11 vet) Nothing beats a being a NCO period!
Being an 0369 in THE INFANTRY is good times !!! Literally
I’m an 0369 rn lol shits awful!
Well the admin shit about it.
