First wave of Indians to the East Africa coast were part of the trans-Indian Ocean trade that also included Chinese traders in the 14th and 15th century . Some Black bantu populations were captured by Arabs then shipped first to Arabian peninsula then to India as workers and slaves . In India some served as soldiers .
As early as over 1000 years ago Arabs, Persians and later Portuguese in the 15th century settled in the coastal parts of East Africa including Kenya and Tanzania . Later settlements have included the British and Italians in the 19th and 20th century and later the Germans in Tanganyika during the same period and in Kenya in the 20th century . The Coastal part of Tanzania and Kenya is a melting pot of cultures for centuries . Mombasa was the capital of British East Africa protectorate in the 19th and 20th century and Kisumu was the capital of Eastern Uganda under British East Africa during the same time period .
At the coastal part of Kenya and Tanzania including Zanzibar there are Hindu temples and Mosques built over 500 years ago . Persians, Arabs mixed with the local black bantu populations hence Swahili . In addition the locals mixed with Indian traders who settled in the area including during the Omani Arabs rule . Some coastal peoples have been able to trace their part Indian ancestry through DNA . Prominent Persian families in the coastal area include the Shirazis , Prominent Arab families include the Mazruis and Sarais and prominent Indian families include the Shahs and the Khans .
The second wave of Indians was in the 19th and 20th century under British East Africa protectorate as traders and workers . The third wave of Indians is in the 21st century in competition with other Asian groups particularly the Chinese and Japanese due to globalization .
