I must be among the few that wouldn't mind too much if Jackett sold Chaplin. I think he's got a talisman status that hasn't been earned on the pitch. Last season, he spent most of his time on the bench, and didn't often take the chance when he came on as a sub.
If we sold him to fund the purchase of a player who scored 25 goals last season like that Cheltenham forward Eisa we've been linked with, I think that would be good business.
Chaplin doesn't have the physicality to make it against League 1 defenders. I'd prefer a proven, clinical goalscorer. Ideally the owner would put a few extra quid in the transfer budget so we could have both, because Chaplin does have untapped potential, but if given the choice, I think we need to look to the more immediate future first.
We've desperately lacked a 20 goals a season striker since Defoe left.
James Bennett Chaplin is worth much more than we’d sell him for. You can play around a player like him, physicality doesnt make much of the game at all. This preseason he has been firing them in like is nothing against players much bigger than him. I believe he can easily become a 20+ goal scorer if he gets regular first team football, he certainly has the confidence to do so. Its a big mistake to let him go, especially since not only has he got great talent, but his heart is at pompey as well.
