I just bought a mint Nikon F built in 1965 so I replayed this episode. I always appreciate the way you organize your content. No stone left unturned. Thanks
I bought an F three months ago. I am just now ready to load a roll to go out and play. looking forward to getting used to this camera. This one has a 35mm f-2 lens.
Thanks this was featured in Antonionis blow up my fms lightmeter has packed up so I’m reviewing the early Nikon’s. Some cool features that disappear in future models
thank you Mr Vuotto for this amazing video, i am quite amazed with the two dots functions on the speed dial and the shutter release button. been aiming for this camera for a while now, wanted something iconic and historical to the photography scenes. so, yesterday was my birthday and i sold my F3 with a couple of lenses bout a week ago, so wish me well om getting a fairly good condition of this great camera. thanks again. looking forward for your next content. #staysafe
Thank you Naza. Look for later serial numbers starting with 72,73 or 74. They were made in the 1970’s. Better chance of getting one in very good condition.
Negative. When “R” is selected, the advance spool is disengaged (freewheeling for reverse) this prevents the shutter from being cocked. The selection must be “A” for the shutter to be cocked and released. This is a fail-safe to prevent unintentional double exposure. Unfortunately unlike digital, the recording medium moves, therefore as the presenter states there is no perfect alignment of the film and mask when this procedure is applied.
I just shot my first roll with the F, and I found out a couple of things: There is no built in diopter so I should wear my glasses when using it. Use the tripod… But it’s all good, lessons learned.
I got told by a reputable repair shop that most original f cameras require a full overhaul to work reliably as they are really old and were mostly heavily used by pros. Seems like at least double the cost of a cla but you should be left with a camera working as well as one that just left the factory. If there's a camera worth doing this to surely its the og Nikon f 😍
I just bought a Nikon F Photomic today. The meter works but seems to be reading a couple of stops slower than my F2 which has been tested as accurate. I know this isn’t a diagnostic channel but as a longtime fan I thought I might run it by you for an opinion. Thanks
Is it always off by the same amount in different light? If so you can set the iso to give you the same reading as your F2. Otherwise you may need to have it repaired.
@@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 yes it’s the same difference in various lighting situations. Great tip, I’ll adjust the ISO accordingly. Easy fix. Plus, I have enjoyed all your videos on the vintage Nikon shooting experience. I have also recently added the much maligned Nikon EM w/50mm 1.8 and 100 mm to my collection and look forward to shooting that as well. Thanks
You sir are a great asset to all of us. I just purchased a 1965 Nikon F with the photomic meter. It is the first time in years I am excited about a camera. Thank you for showing me how to use it.
Hi Jules, I have a question. I just film tested my nikon F that I bought and all the exposures after the first 3 are completely blacked out on the left side. It covers about 30% of the exposure and the line that separates the blacked out portion from the rest of the exposure is a straight line. Any ideas as to what issue this might be?
@@bboygoldfish It could be a problem with the shutter. When you say blacked out. Is the film itself black or the prints? If it’s the prints that means that the film would be clear causing that part of the print to be black. Take off the back of the camera and the lens and aim the camera at a light color wall and release the shutter at different speeds. See if the shutter is fully opening. Let me know what you discover about.
@@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 I took it to a repair tech, and the shutter was having issues just like you said! I ended up getting a Nikon FE2 as a replacement. This will be a back-up to my Nikon N6006 that's been in my family for decades! Thanks for your help!!
Yes you can attach a cable release. It’s the Nikon AR2 that screws into the male threads at the bottom of the shutter release. It is very secure and very well made. When the shutter is set to T and you press the shutter release, the shutter remains open until you turn the shutter speed dial. That will work for very long exposures. For marked shutter speeds of 1 sec or faster with the camera on a tripod or other support use the self timer if you don’t have a cable release.

Nikon did put a Hot/Cold Shoe on the Nikon F3P and also the F3 Limited. I think that Nikon may have put Hot/Cold shoes on other F3 variants as well.

The cable release adapter is the same on my 1957 Yashica Mat camera.
Hello
For double exposure, isn't it just possible to to:
turn the barrel on R
cock the shutter
go back to A position
?

My nikon f shutter arm seems jammed. Is there a lock? Many thanks for a great video.
Are you talking about the advance lever? Not sure what you mean by shutter arm.
Thanks so much . I have a later version but cannot figure out which one. Any suggestions how to find out what later edition it is?
Can you send me a picture of it?

Can you install a cable release onto the Nikon F? and does the "T" function work as a substitute to a cable release if you don't have one?
