Volunteer Firefighters in the Philippines arose from "反華". In the early days, firemen refused to fight the fire of burning Chinese properties. After several incidents, the local chinese community organized their own volunteer firefighters initially recruiting from themselves. They fought fire regardless who owns the property.
They are more organized, better equipped and faster to respond than the government firefighters. Nowadays, volunteers come from all walks of life, gender, ethnic groups with the single purpose: "PUT OUT FIRE!"
PS. In Philippines, Firetrucks, Ambulances, Police are the only vehicles that can use Sirens. But motorists readily give way to firetrucks but not so much to police or ambulances (who are known to abuse the sirens). THAT is how much the people respect firefighters (volunteers or not).

most volunteer firefighter don't have SCBAs so probably not better equipped. Like in the case of manila post office fire in 2023 only BFP firefighters could enter due to the smoke inside the building

I have a question for the Chinoy firefighters, though. Years ago, when I was younger, I asked a Chinoy whom my dad knew in our neighborhood if I could join them. I am Filipino, btw. He flatly told me that I cannot because I am not Chinese. He also told me that maybe they could make an exception and allow me to join if my dad would donate a firetruck. I don't know if what he said was true, or he was just trying to make my dad donate to their organization. Is this true? If it is, it sucks. How can they discriminate in something that is supposed to be a noble undertaking? Anyway, after that I lost my interest in becoming a volunteer fireman eventhough it had been my dream for a long time.

that's funny, i know few government officers, either firefighter chief, police chief, or super intendent officers.
never heard of donating first before volunteering, that sounds shameless.
although i only volunteered for a year as a rescuer/emt.
i still doubt about needing to donate a firetruck and not being chinese 😂😂.
the guy who told you that possibly a beginner or just a complete shameless or racists at its finest.
all you need in volunteering into those jobs are training certificates, and practical knowledge, some stations needs emt for hands on, even working for bfp need bachelor degree not donations😁. although i am too late to comment, i hope this helps. also filifino doesn't really say about not being chinese, because we're not chinese we are proud filifino. we never say china numba wan🤣
      - although i remember on my time of my volunteer that one hated firefighter about rejecting someone because of not donating or something. (yea, i remember we laugh about it of how shameless that one guy is)

meron po nagbibigay ng pagkain minsan and/or discounts sa mga market dahil po sa mga natulungan nila po. at minsan rin po may mga taong nagbibigay po ng pera, pero po volunteers po mismo umaayaw sa binibigay ng taong bayan dahil po they volunteered for their own risk not for the others blessings.
