You can strap on on a Mathey-Tissot and be wearing a watch that looks great, runs well, doesn't cost too awful much, and, perhaps most importantly to some, says "Swiss Made" on the dial.
Fun fact the reason Type 20’s have that weirdly marked 30 minute subdial is because most of them used movements that were modified to count 15 minutes. So after each minute on the chronograph the chrono minute hand would jump twice. Something to do with flying, they preferred a 15 minute chronograph.
Some of the Mathey-Tissot watches are gaudy, however, the Type 21 Flyback Chrono ETA quartz watches are very cool. I bought the black one and the ‘brown’ one from JS. They are very solidly put together. The metal work is excellent. They have ar coated sapphire crystals and deployant clasps. There are ss band variants also. They have a lot of charm and a bargain for a Swiss watch. Lume is not great, but they are pilot watches, so no biggy. A great buy in my book.
That's the best looking bezel I've seen for ...maybe ever. Stainless, slim in width and height and bidirectional. Making it better in use should be easy for any manufacturer
It's a very nice watch! I no longer mind the 19mm lugs. For some reason, in Turkey, there are tons of places selling odd sizes including 19mm and 21mm in leather and textile Nato style. Maybe it's because Turkey is a traditional leather manufacturer, for example the world famous Bosphorous Leather selling watch boxes up to $10,000 and $25,000 watch winders! I won't be getting one for my Heimdallr Monster! Also if Nato is your thing a 20mm one will look fine on most 19mm lug widths. Excellent video as always Jody. Have a good weekend.
I bought the green dialed datejust homage a couple months back. My first son is due in the middle of May (hence the emerald green dial) and I'm wearing the watch everyday until he is born, at which point I'm taking the battery out, setting it to his birth time and putting it in a shadow box as a momento. Say what you will about them, but to me that is well worth the $100 price and Mathey-Tissot will always be a special brand to me.
Hello Jody I'm glad you are discussing the Mathey-Tissot. I purchased the GMT H 903 with the jubilee bracelet from Joma shop a year ago and still runs well. Looks good along among my many 200 plus watches. Cheers!
Full TGV ... 😂🤣😂🤣 ... the amount of 'scientific study of time' and it's acknowledgment is appreciated ... Cheers! Learned a lot about Mathey-Tissot ! It's on the radar.
RUclips and in no small way JOMW are my TGV😉 And not to argue but your Hamilton has plenty of heritage with Hamilton being one of several precursors to CWC for the British Air Force, and not to mention their time only models being issued to the allies in WWII. Great review and definitely a cool timepiece!
Even if one views this brand churning out homage watches, it is still a good choice with its heritage and Swiss made tag. The Evasion series is stunning, it is Nautilus homage but with its own characteristics.
Mineral crystal and printed dial at this price? Well, at least the case back is..wait. It isn't. Well at least it can withstand a good hand washing..uh oh. Hmmm. Uhh.
Such a shame its got mineral and no true sapphire crystal as looks nice however I much prefer the look of the Hamilton myself. Great video Jody and shoutout to Morne for the loan! 🏆
I took a gamble on a Jomashop purchase yesterday. the gamble is not the interwebstore which I've already had three great purchases from but I've gone below 40mm for the first time in a long time all the way to 39 but maybe more importantly only 16mm bracelet width. Time will tell whether it looks ok on my Simpson wrist or I can change to stepped leather Failing that it's such a great deal I should be able to flip it at little cost..
Looks quite nice, but a bit pricey for the brand. I suspect the reality is you can pick it up a bit cheaper than the list. On their website, they had others that I liked more in that style that were cheaper, as you noted. Not bad, got me thinking of the brand. I like the more minimalist dial and the shiny case...very Longines. Not a fan of Hamilton, so would probably grab this if I really wanted this style. I like the Longines models for this style the most though. I sort of hope they go better and become a contender. Mineral lets you have the curved crystal, perhaps some of its use is for the look and history accuracy? You can buy very expensive Omegas with Hesalite...which are totally historically accurate. We all know the model. :)
I have the Type XX (20) manual with the 510 Sellita movement the same model. Love it as it is an option to the better Hanhart 417ES 39mm non-Flyblack version with the same movement.
Hello. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and expertise on watches. I have been learning quite a bit. What are your thoughts on the NOWA and Cadola brands? If you have already covered them could you direct me to those videos? Thanks again for your time.
Had Mathey-Tissot 2 years ago, the crappiest watch ever. One of the case holes for the strap lug was not drilled all the way, had to fix after the strap came out many times. Then the cheap quartz died a month after warranty ended. Junk watches for the money, Invicta level for much more
2 Minute marks is NOT a "problem of the design". It's a desirable feature to actual aviators who need to time two minute turns. This is a standard turn rate for aviation for a coordinated 360 degree turn. Your standard holding pattern is a 4 minute track of four, 1 minute segments. It's a tool with a purpose, you're just not using it for the correct purpose. For actual flyers 2 minutes is the most important indication to have... hence you have 2 minute markings on a true aviation tool. I fly an all glass Gamin 1000 instrument panel now, but my old 1972 Cessna had a dedicated 2 minute analog timer on the dash.
They do make a quartz version for quite a bit less if you like the asthetic but not the price tag. I've got one of the Mathey Tissot City quartz watches. For $80 it's a nice looking watch. I do take the claims of "swiss made" with a bit of salt though.
Hi! I'm just about to buy my first watch for my graduation and my watch of choice is the Hamilton khaki field 42 automatic with a brown leather strap. I wonder, if it's too big for my wrist. I have a about 7 inch wrist and the lug to lug is about 50 mm I guess. I got a really good deal on it in Finland about 450 euros. Is it too big for a every day wearer?
Yeah, I'm gonna have to say that the comparison with the Vostok says it all. Flimsy bezel action, rough strap, and awkward (even if historically accurate) minute counter make this a no-go for me. Just looking at it next to the Hamilton there is no way I would pay the same money for the Mathey-Tissot.
I don't object to a sapphire coated mineral. Mineral crystal gets you that lovely high done and clarity you don't often get from a full sapphire crystal, but for the price you'd think they'd stretch to the best crystal available... And that blue AR is very off putting
It is nice but the price is dangerously close to Longines Avigation Bigeye (a swiss made column wheel chronograph). That watch is absolutely amazing and clearly better than this watch. So, I agree with Jody, either spend the same money and get the hamilton(I own it and it is great) or spend more and get the Longines.
I didn't know much about the brand. I knew they were once an old school heritage swiss brand. I nearly bought one from the 30's on ebay once. But I assumed they let the name lapse sometime in the 70's and the chinese bought it the name.
What kind of specification is that, the watch has to work at least 300 times? What has to work, the stopwatch or rewind, the clasp or what? Sounds a bit weird, or perhaps it's normal for the military to make specifications like that.
I have the "Rolex" submariner style in green and I get more compliments on it than I do any other watch in my collection. Including my real Rolex and others that are considered "high end".
I will never understand peoples focus on saphire crystal. I'm perfectly fine with mineral crystals and have yet to scratch one. I guess this is only relevant, when you are rough to your watches and bang them around carelessly, although saphire gives you more of an ease of mind while wearing.
I think one of te biggest problems with youtubers is that they just act by snobism following certain trends without diving into deep waters. This is why so many of them don't know or misvalue brands like this. Mathey-Tissot is a great historic Swiss brand with a rich history in watchmaking in the past and a modest but very interesting offer in present days. Elvis wore Mathey-Tissot and had several dozens given to his friends and acquitances as a present; more recently Robert de Niro wore a rare gold vintage MT in the film The Irishman by F F Coppola. They make interesting models at affordable prices. But you don´t have to worry, even the great Eric Giroud himself was surprised to discover how interesting and valuable this brand was when they asked him to design the Mathey-Tissot Edmond to honor the man who founded the brand in 1886. Enjoy the discovery.
Yes sooo TRUE, i have gone deeper into their history and i realized they provided high end brands with high grade movements. Just bcuz a youtuber is talking about it and criticizing does not mean it's facts. Honestly, just like you said, most of them are mere snobs. I own one and so far it is my favorite as i'm completely shocked by the quality of craftsmanship. Cheers
I agree, folks dismiss MT or 'sleep' on them. They've recently released 3 new colourways in their Type 21 Automatic range. I picked up the Gunmetal case version with grey dial. Quite stunning
The movement and case are very good. But mineral crystal and a mangy strap for that much money? I will stick with my Seagull 1963 for a bit less. Cheers, Jody 🍻!
Easy to have a raging agreement about your review. Seems like they are leveraging their history to sell lower specifications and quality (the bezel). Huge opportunity for the new CEO! Merci!
My new Mathey Tissot worked for eleven days and then ceased functioning and is now resting in Rhode Island for several weeks awaiting the arrival of a new movement.
Jody's First Hour Army, present and correct sah
Huu-ah!
Present!
At ease soldier
I'm a Fifth Hour Army. The battle will already have been fought! 😂
7 month army😭😭
I inherited a vintage Mathey-Tissot last year. Its solid 18k gold and that's all I know about it. It was nice to learn a little about the brand
You can strap on on a Mathey-Tissot and be wearing a watch that looks great, runs well, doesn't cost too awful much, and, perhaps most importantly to some, says "Swiss Made" on the dial.

Very interesting Chris. I did not know that!! 👍👍
To answer your question bomb runs were timed at 15 minutes from the start of the run in.Sad ww2 aviation geek here sorry.
This guy, just popping his head into rooms to drop little nuggets of knowledge that I can never resist. How’d you learn that?
I heard it was something to do with phonecalls 🤷♂️
2-minute turns are a common practice for Aviator instrument navigation
Some of the Mathey-Tissot watches are gaudy, however, the Type 21 Flyback Chrono ETA quartz watches are very cool. I bought the black one and the ‘brown’ one from JS. Great video. I'd rather pay a bit more and get the TISSOT, HAMILTON or Longines.
Interesting to find out about the brand, I always assumed they were something to do with Tissot but mostly suspiciously cheap.
It's a very nice watch! I no longer mind the 19mm lugs. For some reason, in Turkey, there are tons of places selling odd sizes including 19mm and 21mm in leather and textile Nato style. They are not bad w good price &good look . I own a few . They do have some history.

Say what you will about them, but to me that is well worth the $100 price and Mathey-Tissot will always be a special brand to me.
That's a sweet story! But why a boring Datejust homage for such a big moment?
I knew nothing of the history of this brand until today. Thank you so much for the review, Dr. J.
Solid and entertaining as usual.
TGV joke was good. Quality review as always.
Absolute pure class.
Chuffed
Kipper's Knickers!
TGV’s history lessons have become my favorite niche of his.
ay now, I’ll admit lads, I love TGV. I think some people take him too seriously.

Not bad but I’m still a big unsure about them.
Bought a Pepsi GMT M/T, very good quality but didn't keep it long due to the size being a couple mm too small.
I got the Signum Lume GMT! It's amazing and I'm absolutely happy with it. Truly a torch and the bracelet is fantastic, very comfy.
How much are they?
@@armandr1613 450 for the GMT. Might be the last mechanical tool watch I need.
Even if one views this brand churning out homage watches, it is still a good choice with its heritage and Swiss made tag. The Evasion series is stunning, it is Nautilus homage but with its own characteristics.

Ahahhahha! Steve, you should do reviews mate!
Boy next to the Hamilton it looks cheap it honestly looks like a Chinese knock off. You did well with the Hamilton I love mine!
🤫😉
I kinda dig this one. If I didn't own a Longines Avigation BigEye, I would have bought the MT.
Such a shame its got mineral and no true sapphire crystal as looks nice however I much prefer the look of the Hamilton myself. Great video Jody and shoutout to Morne for the loan! 🏆

Would like to see a remake of the watch Mathey Tissot designed for Elvis. TCB!

They have a collaboration with Hemel which is interesting, and perhaps better given Hemel's rep for attention to detail!
Elvis owned a Mathey-Tissot
A mineral crystal on a $1400 watch is absolutely criminal.

Thanks.
Great video but can't see many getting sold at these prices when thinking about all the other options

Mineral suggests maximum effort to drop manufacture cost. If they did that to save a couple of quid, where else are they cutting corners?
Like Roamer this is one of those obscure Swiss brands that have always been there but are generally ignored by most mechanical watch consumers.
I don't object to a sapphire coated mineral. Mineral crystal gets you that lovely high done and clarity you don't often get from a full sapphire crystal, but for the price you'd think they'd stretch to the best crystal available... And that blue AR is very off putting

That MT logo on the inside of the box is awesome. Cool watch too lol.
I’m actually surprised that Baltany hasn’t just homaged the type XX themselves. Or maybe they have and I missed it?
I didn't know much about the brand. I knew they were once an old school heritage swiss brand. I nearly bought one from the 30's on ebay once. But I assumed they let the name lapse sometime in the 70's and the chinese bought it the name.
Such an interesting Brand Jody!! Thank you for sharing!! Keep it up!! 😁😁😍😍😍
The price of one of these you can actually buy a genuine preloved breguet!!
you know, when its spelled backwards tissot spells toss it, i have heard nothing but bad about them
No brainer... I would go with the Hamilton
They do a couple of SW200 powered divers at $300. Nothing wrong with that
They use ronda r150 tho
@ yes, I see they changed over. Mine still has a rebranded SW200.
I like the Breguet Type XXI 3810 tri-compac
Looks like a OMEGA dynamic automatic III
Thanks Jody

Yeah, that's me, I'm rough on my watches so sapphire is a must. Cheers!
I remember when mathey tissot was a $30 brand sold at Sears, Woolworths, and JC Penney
"reliable enough to function at least 300 times..." that would last about a day with my level of watch-fiddling
Ha! Ocd button pusher?

@@lebrad7301 They are a stunning brand they just had a very difficult time keeping up with the quartz crisis as many other watch brands have.
@@lebrad7301 You have an heritage with Mathey-Tissot, a rich history dating back to 1886.
Mathey Tissot are crafters of complicated timepieces LOL, they are more than great.
Love the RetroGP Hesketh-shirt, got one myself =)
"Go full TGV on you" 🤣🤣🤣 Golden!
The movement and case are very good. But mineral crystal and a mangy strap for that much money? I will stick with my Seagull 1963 for a bit less. Cheers, Jody 🍻!
So glad you did this. I wanted this for a while
Another great review Jody, informative, Love the look of vintage type 20's, This one could have been better what a shame
I never thought I would hear the words "nuclear weapons" while someone is talking about a watch, or on Jody's channel😁
Is it a flyback chronograph? I like the looks
Took me far too long to realise that Mathey-Tissot is not associated with Tissot. 😳
Save up for the Longines big eye instead.
Love catching one of your videos before I go to sleep :) I suppose that means I should be in bed earlier, you’re 15 hours ahead
Ha! Yes indeed mate, go to bed!
Wow 3rd time lucky catching your review in the first 15 minutes here in NY - 😂 on the full TGV comment!
Thanks mate! I'm launching them a bit earlier. Might go even earlier still.
Kept waiting for the 1963 to make an appearance.
Yet another amazing T-shirt there Jody!
Love the Hesketh T-Shirt :)
Great review Jodi! I always wanted to hear a review of this brand, because yes, it can be cheap or creap until you have it. So thanks and cheers! 👍🏻
Superb video, what a lovely piece this is!
Any pointer to good PANERAI homage AliExpress models ? RADIOMIR models.
Full TGV haha ..love it!!😂😂
I knew the first two as I have an old one sweet watch
Nice watch but you should get more for your money.
Does anybody know if the sapphire coating on the mineral crystal actually makes a difference?
The big problem for this watch is the fact that the Longines Big Eye can be had for just a few hundred more.
You reviewed a Mathey-Tissot quartz GMT Pepsi that they were selling on Jomashop a couple of years ago.
Nope. Not me.
Nice videos! A fan from Brazil!
How are they related to Tissot?
Easy to have a raging agreement about your review. Seems like they are leveraging their history to sell lower specifications and quality (the bezel). Huge opportunity for the new CEO! Merci!
Is it a fly back?
Top review. Hard pass on the brand from me. You see them sold on shopping channels 🤮
My new Mathey Tissot worked for eleven days and then ceased functioning and is now resting in Rhode Island for several weeks awaiting the arrival of a new movement.
I recently bought the matthey-tissot pepsi. It was cheap feeling and looking I returned it
Love the Hesketh t-shirt 😎
I need more retro F1 tees I think.....
The watch is nice but I'm not very impressed at that price.
I like the ✌️on the crown
Good morning
Morning!
How come these Tissot's do not have "1853" written on the dial?
