  • My name is Lauren Bateman and I specialize in helping older guitar students (age 50+) learn to play guitar. I have found one of the most important skills to practice for as a guitar student is based in a little bit of science. ✅ Support Lauren's Channel by Purchasing her BEGINNER GUITAR COURSE: www.laurenbatemanguitar.com/co...
    As someone with a degree in science (yep, my degree is NOT in music), I find that I am very methodical in my approach to learning guitar. I focus on a very important concepts that I do not see many guitar teachers talking about and that is developing new neural pathways for muscle memory.
    Repetition is so important for older learners and I am going to show you in this video why.

    You are never too old to learn. I started at 63. never played an instrument in my life but am always surprising myself with what I achieve. Played a little charity gig in November, lots of my ex-students in the audience ... and it was amazing. Follow Lauren, give it a go and ENJOY.

    I have been a Platinum member with Lauren for 3 years now. Her courses and private guitar community I credit with keeping me consistently engaged in learning the guitar. For decades, i would play for a couple of months, then get bored and store the guitar for years, then repeat the cycle. Since joining Lauren, i have been playing consistently and actually learned to finger pick something i thought i would never have the coordination to do. I highly recommend Lauren's program. Strum on ! 🙂🎶

    I heard a neurologist say once that building muscle memory / wiring up the connections in your brain is just a natural consequence of the repetitions that you do. You can't do all those repetitions and NOT build the neural pathways, just like you can't do pressups or squats repeatedly and NOT build muscle strength.

    At 51, I am concerned that my pathways are overgrown... with weeds... and I'm sitting in the middle of the road forgetting which side I was SUPPOSED to be on. Wait-- what was I doing before I got to this part of the road?
    Kidding! :) Older adults absolutely can still learn. The truth is that learning guitar is can keep you sharp and mentally healthier-- and, the dexterity it provides is great! My surgeon suggested I jump back in and continue learning after I healed from surgery, said it would be great for physical therapy!

    I am right in the age group you talk about. Learning new skills has always been a life long journey, but, while I am still at the start of learning guitar, I am finding it is a whole new level. I love the simplicity of how you teach. Above all, I really appreciate that you don't sell 'a solution' or technique that makes learning guitar a simple and instant experience. It isn't.
    Setting out a pathway with the various steps and skills along with setting achievable expectations I is crucial. Maybe a video explaining a proven pathway and journey would be helpful. Obviously some learn in different ways, but some explanation of the different steps might be useful to many.

    • @LaurenBateman
      @LaurenBateman  8 месяцев назад

      It's definitely not easy. It is a journey and everyone's journey is different.

      @@LaurenBateman I really should pay more attention! 😂. Your 7 step program does everything I had worked out that I need. A structured pathway ordered from intro to basic skills. The lack of expert (or even peer) constructive feedback and guidance to give confidence is probably what many find difficult - someway or advice to fix that would be helpful. Just been hammered with some major unexpected expenses but your program is just what I need. Keep up the brilliant work.

  • @petset77

    Bear with me, if you will. I'm an old guy who used to play decades ago... mostly bass professionally, played with my fingers, but I could play guitar and a few other instruments well enough to write. I think pattern changes also help exercise fingers. Down picking on the first exercise could be expanded to down and up, and vice versa. Half or whole step movement could be attained with a hammer on, or pull off, or combination. Maybe a bit more appropriate in slightly more advanced lessons, but just saying. It's about mobility and making the mind and fingers work after all. Especially for old people like me. I randomly decided to pick up the guitar again, and it's a combination of frustration with neck fingers that don't move well any more, and fumbling with the pick hand. Someone asked me about a bass line of an old song we played (which got me to take instruments out of their cases), and I could do it without missing a beat (literally). Guitar, as a second instrument, has been more of a challenge. It's why I'm looking at all the great tutorials now available. Your exercise with fingers on the G string, moving each individually from high to low E is the baby step I'm noodling with as I badly play music I already (used to) know. Thanks for the exercises. I'm not getting back into the biz, but it would be nice to be able to somewhat competently play again.

    Lauren what about the solo stuff? I’ve mastered open chords now but my muscle memory to do all that solo stuff is just not happening and it’s been like over 3 years now of playing. I don’t know how people like slash are able to hit every string and move their fret fingers in the same spot that fast? It’s absolutely amazing. Maybe I’m just a rhythm player only? I’m 48 so I dunno. Can you be a great guitar player without being about to solo and play scales fast and all that?
    Thanks!

      You can be! I have a lead guitar 101 course that might be helpful (www.laurenbateman.com/courses).
