    Carrots also add some sweetness that a tomato based sauce needs to balance the acidity.

    Your sloppy joes look good. Anytime I made food with tomato sauce, (when my children were living at home), I put grated carrots in to neutralize the acidity of the tomato sauce. It’s a good way to lessen the sugar. I have to watch out for hidden sugar because of my health, sugar seems to be in everything.

      Alice My Momma always made it that way ,I never thought to ask But it is to late now.I am guessing it was a recipe handed down to her ..She never cooked from a book ever!

      +Homestead Tessie I can understand that. My mother and father both were great cooks and passed down the handful of this, pinch of that, and a smile through all the heat over the wood cook stove. I had a time converting to measuring devices and sharing recipes and ways of cooking their dishes. Thanks for inspiring me to try my hand at not using measuring cups and spoons again after so many years of "doing it the right way" according to those who thought they knew better lol.

    We love canning. During the time when my wife was home from the hospital and I was off work taking care of her, we lived off stuff we had canned..some several years ago. We have done a bit of burger, we have never canned Sloppy Joe. We will try this in the upcoming year! I will check out your other canning videos, thanks for sharing!!

    I usually do a stock up when ground beef hits $1.99 a pound, or ground chuck drops to $2.99. Yum yum on the sloppy joe. That’s on my agenda to can during the next cycle. My husband hates it when I can. It tires me out so bad, I need a day of rest afterwards. Watching your videos has helped me see better ways to do things, like doing the hard stuff over a two day period. Thanks for effort you put into educating the dumb amongst us!

    Mmmm. I never heard of the carrots but I love carrots. Thanks Tessie. I found ration stamps my Mother had hung onto after she passed away. They used a lot of things to stretch meat back then. Carrots and onions would have been in the root cellar. Like Tessie they used what they had and learned to make do. Love every video.

    I learned something today, I never knew what 'Sloppy Joe' was. But this looks delicious! Would it work with minced beef/pork too? Or is it a recipe that you shouldn't touch it? The reason why I ask this is because it's 21℉ and I don't like to travel with this kind of weather. The ALDI is nearby and has minced pork/beef on sale (1.95$ for a pound). You're absolute right about the pricing, it depends on where you live.

    • @HomesteadTessie
      @HomesteadTessie  6 лет назад

      YES you can add any other meat even chicken,theo you can also change the ketchup sugar ratio ect :) The whole recipe can be tweaked ,

    • @xXTheoLinuxXx
      @xXTheoLinuxXx 6 лет назад

      Thank you and it's nice to know. I don't want to ruin 'traditional' recipes. Sometimes it's a different story with people from other countries. For example 'Roti' from Suriname, if you replace the long beans with regular green beans, and if you dare to say it to one of them they are not amused :P Sure there is a tiny bit of difference, but nothing to start a war about it. Speaking about Roti, perhaps I should make an easy video about it and call it the 'homesteaders roti', it's easier and cheaper to make (it's a beans, potato, chicken, onion and stuffed pancake recipe). Oh by the way, in case you want to know a bit about the brownbeansoup, I've made a video in Dunglish :P

It doesn't look very sloppy , do you add more liquids when you go to serve it ?Sounds good i might just be used to the canned store stuff but it looked kind of dry in the pot.
