  • With first mate Carol still back in Toronto, Brian's wife Ramona joins him in Tahiti and leaving Prince Diamond in Papeete, the 2 fly to Nuku HIva, one of the islands in the Marquesas by-passed by Prince Diamond. Using a B&B in Taioha'e as a base, we do a walking tour up to the Vaipo waterfall. And following the steps of Herman Melville we drive up his beloved "Typee" (Taipivai) Valley, look for his house, and explore the archeological sites of Te'i'ipoka, Kamuihei and Tahakia.

They actually missed both sites where there are original Tikis!! One a kilometer below the big one at Hatiheu, the other, he saw the sign, but, having no guide, thought it was the entry to a couple of houses..... It was! But one parks at the roadside & climbs past the houses, up and up. A small Tohua, (Religious temple) With several original Tikis.

Such a beautiful island one of a kind too bad you did not have a proper drone with! A DJI Inspire 2 pro or a Phantom 3 pro would really do a good job filming and taking pics. Thanks for the video cheers.

Your sense of adventure makes most people lives seem futile.

There never has been a plaque at his 3 week lodging. There is, however, a monument on the beach in Taiohae, at the spot where he is said to have come ashore.... Someone stole the portrait of him some 20 years ago!

This highlights the reason it's far better to hire a guide! He gets so much wrong.... Especially pronunciation! I was a guide there from 1998 to 2015.
