  • With so much to see and do, this is the first of two videos looking at the epic story of Canterbury. The light was fading quickly, but I just about managed to get to all the sights I needed on time - phew!

    The best thing about Canterbury is the museum there that has the orignal models of Bagpus, The Clangers and other children's TV favourites. The programmes were made by Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate just outside the city..

    Good video. Short, but good. Interesting intro, too, but the video was kind of short. The quick look inside the cathedral was nicely shot, but kind of short. What I'm trying to say is more of Vicki Explores is even better. Thanks Vicki and Geoff.

    Vicki, please make your videos longer! You could easily do 30 minutes on Canterbury.
    I went to Canterbury last summer on a Javelin from St Pancras. Great service.
    A few railway-related questions:
    Why are the stations called Canterbury West and East when any sensible person would call them North and South?
    Why is there a huge gap between the platforms at Canterbury West?
    Why is Canterbury West signal box built over the tracks where it would be engulfed in smoke several dozen times a day?

    • @ameliareid1030
      @ameliareid1030 4 года назад +1

      Its called canterbury west since the station is near the Westgate Towers but not sure about Canterbury East

    • @toy1606
      @toy1606 4 года назад +6

      - The city straddles the Stour which 'sort-of' runs north-south (More north east/south west) but subsequently has an east and west bank, upon which the stations sit. As@Amelia Reid mentions, the West station is near the west gate of the old city walls.
      - There used to be through-lines in between but were removed due to reduced traffic
      - There were goods lines at Canterbury West. The signal box (one of two that straddled the tracks) was built there so as to give the signalman a better view over the whole layout as building at track level would have been obscured by trainshed roofs.

      @@toy1606 Thank you. I knew somebody would have the answers. I once had the brilliant idea of photographing a train at the Severn Valley Railway from a footbridge but found it wasn't such a brilliant idea when I disappeared in a cloud of smoke and steam. I can't help thinking the Canterbury signalmen must have had a similar problem.

    People say that Canterbury is the County Town of Kent. But it’s actually Maidstone that is the County Town of Kent. Same with Trowbridge which is the County Town of Wiltshire and not Salisbury or Swindon. I do like the Vicki Explores videos on All The Stations channel. Vicki does know her history & knowledge.
