I've been interested in the history of the Ouled Nail for years, and just attended an Ouled Nail workshop with Amel Tafsout. I am a Tribal Fusion dancer, however, I also enjoy dancing different styles of dance. I loved your interpretation and I wouldn't have known that you weren't born to the dance by your performance. I really appreciate the fact that you researched the movements and garments and after seeing Ms. Tafsout perform I would say you definitely HIT it!!!
Thank you! With there being so little information on the historic Ouled Nail, it was hard to know if my interpretation was going to be a hit or miss! I researched as much as I could on the movements they did, and the garments they wore. That costume took several months to make and weighs a ton. I am actually going to make my folkloric students put it on tonight and dance around in it! :-} I'm such a meanie!
No, he has nothing correct because these people "the Ouled Nail" are from an Arab ethnic tribe, their clothes and jeweleries are Arab and identical to yemen jeweleries and the Arabian Peninsula ,so the word "Middle Eastern" is fitting the subject. I'M FROM OULED NAIL TRIBE . by the way ,your dance is nearer to the ouled nail's ! i'm a goldsmith specialised in ouled nail ethnic jewelery i can help you if you want .
C'est une artiste qui danse qui danse très bien !!!!! Bravo ...... Mais ce n'est ni le rythme ni les habits ni la danse des Ouled Nails !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Désolé.
@TheMehdieval You are correct, I didn't see anyone claim this performance was Middle Eastern. I am the Artistic Director of a Middle Eastern Dance Company, but that doesn't mean I dance only those styles. I love all the music and dances from North African as well!
@tasnim dzyr : Ouled Nail are not from arab tribes they are Arabized Berbers, just look on the Berber Clothes and the silver Jewelry they wear they look like Auresian Chaoui Berbers in the east of Algeria. the only arab tribes in Algeria are Banou Hilal and Banou Sulaym (like Chaamba tribe) and ouled nail lived with them for centuries and that's why they are heavily arabized, but they still preserve the berber clothes jewelry and tattoos Speaking arabic doesn't mean that you are arab, just like the Native Americans who speak English or Spanish. #ReadAlgerianHistory
***** The language doesn't have anything to do with them being an Arabic tribe. Ouled Nail are always told from many misinformed people to be Amazigh while they are not. As for the dess, it shows a slight Berber influence which is natural for they are living among Berber people since a thousand of years, but it doesn't mean they are Berber. You can find Turkish clothes in many traditional Algerian attires ; does this mean the people who wear those suits are Turkish ? And please don't mix things up, pure Berber clothes AND Berber dance don't look like that AT ALL.
that why its improved. We dont really know what they danced like. We, as belly dancers, just think they danced somewhat like this as a community. Their origins were lost during the Algerian and Moroccan war.
I'm Canadian, born and raised. I first heard field recorded Algerian music back in the 1970's, and fell in love instantly. Many times over the years, I have had the opportunity to study with Amel Tafsout, and amazing Algerian folkloric dancer. She is wonderful!
Why the fuck does this say Middle Eastern? The Ouled Nail are from Africa, they are part of the Amazigh ethnic group that lives in the northern region of the continent.
It says 'Nomadic Tapestry - Middle Eastern Dance Company'. That is the name of the dance company, not the dance, it does not in any way say that this dance is Middle Eastern. Middle Eastern dancers can do North African dances too, and please mind you language.
ftahi49 True that they are from North Africa. However, they are an Arabic tribe, not Amazigh as some people use to say. You can even ask any Naili about that ;)
+antivarvar Larbi i'm not oblige to give any information about me okay w i'm nailiya amazighia if u like it or not , if you are taht we are arab u can think what ever u want , but u shoulf respect the others !!!!!!€
