Been in your place trying to put together a Motorola V8 from several models with various issues. Got myself a working model and I love the way it feels in the hand , as for the sticky part I just removed it with alcohol and left it bare metal .

Awesome lot, especially for the GSM versions. Wish these models didn't use soft-touch as I couldn't clean the stickiness off of my Z3 and Z6.

It's crazy how strong these Motorola phones are. Have seen it with your V3XXs (video) and my own platinum V3XX, corrosion all over, but has no issues other than a weak vibration motor.

Disassemble it as far as necessary, removing the parts covered in soft touch, and let those sit submerged in isopropyl alcohol for a few hours. Soft touch will rub off, but it will most likely strip the parts completely, as you saw with those battery covers.

@@retrocomms If the sticky soft-touch degrades even further, I will consider it, thank you for the tips!

All we have is a Samsung
    Sgh x495 we purchased
    2006 and it’s still working.
    Buy $10 worth of minuets
once a year. Plus get extra
    minuets gold plan. Carry it
for back up. About the size
    of a pack of ciggs.😊
