Why did Audi kill off the V12 diesel supercar?

- Back in the mid-noughties, Audi was seriously considering building a diesel-powered supercar to promote its success with the black pump in the Le Mans 24 Hour race. Join me in a mysteriously-powered Audi Q7 to find out exactly how and why we never got to experience 1,000Nm of torque with a manual gearbox…
Bit of an unusual video for my channel, but it's a story I wanted to tell! Shout in the comments if I should do more of this.

In the voice of Vin Diesel:
_So much torque, the chassis twisted coming off the line_
The man himself
Is that a testament to the massive torque or the wobbliness of the chassis?
i hope one day can be a R8 with a V12 TDI as a diesel lover! If that car reach the public i think all it would be different now, more people can know what a diesel is capable !!
Sounds like you should take out the V12 from the toureg and put it in an r8 xD
Good video. Subscribed.
That would be cool to see
I am building my dream V12 supercar with the OG zonda engine😎
The toureg had A deisel V10 not V12 my friend.
@@class50thrasher They had many engine varients in the Toureg. V6, VR6, V8, V10, W12 AND V12 😮Some markets may not have got all versions.
@@UKBUILT the W12 was the VW phaeton there was no deisel v12
@@class50thrasher good to know 👍
I had the diesel Skoda Fabia VRS. As a real road car the low end torque was awesome and much better for overtaking than the petrol GTi I got after it, and used about half the fuel!
Great little cars, I loved mine as well. The replacement was unreliable rubbish, thanks to ECO Green nonsense regulations
Yeah but wants that got today with a V12 Diesel? 😂
@@d-rob5513 are you drunk or learning the English language?
@@robmule4647 ironically Tim mentioned his English degree in the first few seconds of the video 😂
I do like this documentary approach. More of this young lad.
He actually is quite young, I filmed this a year ago this week 😂
You're definitely not the only one that dreams of diesel super cars!
I thought the diesel era with the le mons cars were unbelievable and I use to like watching them
Very disappointing when they stopped
2:24 Hey!! That's actually one of the rarest 4L you can get
Good video. Diesels can be great and I have bought the last 4 cars as diesels and prefer my 330d to my 330 petrol in the real world.
Admittedly I don't really watch many of your vids despite being a very long time subscriber. I do stop by for your more meta content just to keep up with what you're up to.
Thats not to say that there isn't an important place for the 'everyday' car reviews, it just doesn't interest me a great deal.
But this is a great video idea. You have that old school TV journo style of Old Top Gear/5th Gear. It can be a bit anoraky but that's a perfectly okay nieche.
I'm all for it, feel free to sprinkle more of these into your future release schedule!
@@L5GUK thank you! I totally get that - will try to get my hands on a few more interesting things with stories!
I hate that the only engine swap outlawed in this country is from anything else to diesel engine. One could still use it as a boat engine, but thats not even close to the same thing.
It really does sound like Audi had zero capability to think of any ideas outside the one they had. Not only did they have a V8 diesel, they also had the V10 diesel from the Phaeton they could borrow. So the fact neither crossed their mind is really telling
I love the notion of diesel powered supercars. Just buckets of torque down low. I have a dieselgate golf here in the states and i love it.
Damn I thought those were all recalled? Guess not
@@jfox24 they reprogram the ECU
@@albertlira7443 that makes sense. How much does that impact your power and efficiency figures?
I owned a tdi specialty shop when the scandal hit.
Tanked the business because people who had drove cars for years saw a news article and decided to be bitter about the car they had loved the day before.
And in reality the 1.9 tdi engine that made 90hp had good emissions.
You get a 160hp common rail tdi the equation of diesel power doesn’t change.
Fuel=power.
And if you’re making 75% more power.
No shit it has 75% more emissions.
Only people who were upset by the scandals are idiots who thought their farts didn’t stink until they did.
I have a 1.9tdi swapped into a 1981 vw rabbit pickup and it makes 75mpg+
And can run near indefinitely.
2.0tdi it’s only a matter of time until $10k hpfp failure
$7k Dsg failure
$3600 120k maint of dpf and timing belt
Silicate bags in coolant reservoirs that disintegrate and clog heater cores.
And heater cores that fail repeatedly.
No thanks.
Give me the old one.
And a mechanical diesel
@@jfox24that’s not how recalls work my friend 😂😂😂
That would have been short shift tastic 😮
I don't have experience with the Q7, but my pickup weighs 3300KG with the 6.7L Cummins diesel the acceleration is impressive. An Audi R8 with half the weight and similar engine output that would be a rocket 🚀
Think about: Audi V12 diesel engine have same amount of torque as Cummins, but half weight.
i mean its not to late for someone to buy a blown engine r8 and swap the v12 into it
Didn’t darkside try it years ago and it doesn’t fit
@@VelEire_the prototype had a longer modified chassis
I, to this day, still wonder how hard can it be to join 2 inline 6 diesel by the hip and solve this higher rev whacko diesel sports dilema...
Darkside Developments are in the process of fitting the V12 cat weasel into an Amarok.
I think that Audi missed a trick there, they could have made the 4.2 V8 fit and work in the R8 but I guess that it would have looked bad, I still think that it would make an interesting project for a YT car builder to do, it would loose to its petrol siblings on a race circuit but in a long distance A to B race it would be in with a very good chance, especially outside 1st world countries where good petrol is hard to get. I was at the 2006 24hr. Le Mans being a Corvette fan, the Audis were awesome in their speed and silence.
DIESEL is the BEAST n BEST 💖💖
I got to see the R10 race at Road America. It literally was silent except for the tire noise. You could hear the C6.R for miles 😂
we never got any of good diesels here in the states all the emission crap that q7 would be nice
1998-2003 vw tdi.
Bolt on Land Rover 300tdi mechanical injector pump,
Hybrid turbo and injector tips and you get 60mpg and 300lb if torque.
With no sensors or wires needed to run.
Aka if the physical parts of the engine are in tact.
She’s doing to run
Cool review
The new audi r8 diesel, it's explosive
Definiently more of this interesting car stories of the past (the past, feels like yesterday this r8 was announced lol) approach to videos 👍🏻
"Definiently".
Kinda like when hackers get told. They can never touch the computer again. Didn't Volkswagen get told they can never touch a diesel again😂 Maybe it was by choice but kind of related. Once they couldn't play games, they weren't fun anymore.
Actually, HDi is the name of the Peugeot diesel, FAP is the particulate filter.
Sitting here in my pants eagerly anticipating your review of the latest £75k Kia Picanto, but instead I'm watching the history channel and the journey of the diesel combustion engine. Has no one let you review new fodder this week? And, does this mean I need to expect a track review of a mobility scooter on your bike channel? 🙂Great viewing as always Tim, much apprec'd.
@@davidb5552 haha, I was meant to have a BMW and Mini the next two weeks to film but BMW has recalled 1.5m cars for brake issues. Hence editing this video which I filmed in 2023 😂
Yes Tim, it would be hard to describe the "V12 diesal supercar" as one of motorings "tragic missed moments". The brown pooh coloured Audi you were driving is best described as Audi's camo colour range because when they turn out a lumpy car lackinging in any visual elegance, they paint them pooh brown, black or for the brave only to drive, silver metallic. :)
Also, when you talking over the fence rail, I was half expecting you to be joined by an animal that eats grass.
The Alpine A110 takes the same time from 0 to 100 as the AUDI concept. On 1.8 liters of displacement.
Maybe it was a good idea never to put it into production.
If it was anything like the V10 diesel I know why, it was a rough unrefined lump
Top guy
Look I don't have any problem with the tdi. As much as I know in Europe the target is less air damage and then the hdi is in action .when you are trying to use diesel in a sport car I am not so sure that there is any problem maybe the car can be a little bit more clumzy according to other sport cars .I really like diesel engines
12 Zylinders of Oil in German means 12 Zylinder (pures) Öl
The late naughtys?
I will never not be salty about this.
It would've been cool because of its uniqueness, but the nature of a big diesel doesn't really fit a supercar. Having a low redline and riding the mid-range torque is fun in luxo barges and SUVs, but it doesn't sound that appealing in a car like the R8.
A monster V12 Diesel would suit the cheapest supercar ever made perfectly.
@@robmule4647 So being cheaper than other supercars would've made having a 4 500rpm redline appealing...ok.
@@georgimihalkov4781 if an electric car can be a supercar then a 4500rpm 1000 ft/lb 40 mpg diesel R8 definitely can.
@@georgimihalkov4781 it would be appealing due to it's connection to racing
It doesn't matter that the redline is 4k if it pulls like a train from 1k and sounds like 8k because it's a V12.
I really enjoy these car vids, but when the furry microphone is visible, I often wonder what it would look like as a mustache.
subbed because v12 + fap joke
If only the diesel was fueled the way Rudolf Diesel wanted.
With peanut oil?
You'll never stop the snarky comments on Pistonheads... Sadly.
This would’ve been peak R8
It would have been a slow turd.
@@PistonAvatarGuy you must be American?
@@robmule4647 Yes, but what difference does that make? Diesels simply can't compete with spark-ignited engines.
@@PistonAvatarGuy The Audi A8 4.2 V8 Diesel was faster than the V10 S8. A V12 Diesel R8 would embarrass a V8 R8.
@@robmule4647 Why do people always compared turbocharged diesels to naturally aspirated gasoline engines? What happens when you put twin turbos on the V10? Have you seen the 3,000+ hp Audi/Lambo V10s that compete in roll racing?
Aight, who is gonna v12 tdi swap an r8 now
Because it was crud.
Why did they make it, in the first place?
The question is not why, but why not?
Why are you look like Eminem!
No god no
Why would anyone want a diesel audi r8
it defeats the purpose of a supercar lol
"Demonised by politicians" are you kidding me? Who chose not to play by the rules in the whole diesel fiasco? Certainly not the politicians but every car maker out there.
A technology fueled by the waste product of gasoline, either impossible or incredibly expensive to get clean, depending on who you ask.
