I also while living in rodeo, ca watched my next door die from pancreatic cancer. Her husband and father worked at conoco Phillips she did their laundry. I always thought about her while training in ultrasound. Pancreatic cancer is connected to refineries.

I don't think it's correct to say "most people are in the center" when it comes to politics. What do we even mean by such things? Left vs right isn't even a clear way of distinguishing what it is that people believe. If we instead use the terms conservative vs progressive, we get a little more insight, but that also exposes why the binary categorization isn't useful. Everyone believes in conserving some things and making progress on others, sometimes very "extremely" in the extent they want to change. But we can't just count these things up and then average them and say that makes people's views in the "center" because that implies a different situation. When we try to measure things on this left vs right scale, we don't really get any sort of idea about what people actually believe. You are much better off just looking at individual issues. That's the only way we can really understand what is going on and begin to find common ground. Politics are messy and that's just because we live in a complex world. But just because they are messy doesn't mean we should allow them to be completely corrupted and controlled by the people who hold the power and run the media.

Well if you look at individual issues its helpful to understand that there are folks with differences on that (or any) individual issue. For instance, there are folks that think "women's reproductive rights" (pro-choice) are a good thing, and then there are folks who think thou shall not kill (pro-life). There are distinct differences between the two concept thoughts. If all the folks who thought pro-choice would stand together, and likewise those that thought pro-life stood together... one could draw a line down the center of the two groups. It is helpful for some to visualize a line between the two, and if the groups were in front of you some would be on your left and some would be on your right... hence the left/right concept. Now take ALL controversial issues together as individual issues and group them together... you get the same result, two groups who think differently... some are on your left in front of you and some are on the right in front of you... left/right here again. Here is the difference between the groups... the same people are not in the same groups on all issues. Many will be aligned with the same group on all issues, but some people will want/need to change groups on some issues. However, I believe the vast majority of folks will align with people of like minds, i.e. either the "left" or "right" group. The problem is... not so much the differences of ideas... but the way politicians and the news media play one group off the other. Everyone has heard the mantra of divide and conquer, well that's exactly what's happening. The ruling class need division in order to conquer... AND ITS WORKING ! Here is the other problem... the "ruling" class is "We-The-People" and many folks forget that. If We-The-People would ban together and embrace our commonality, things would change. I believe We-The-People have more in common than we have differences, but we are led to believe we are different. Folks should think about that the next time they think about the left/right paradigm. Because you and I may think differently about any subject or issue, that fact does not mean either of us is a bad person.

The more they can have us demonizing the other, whoever that is, the better it is for those in power (unless we are properly aligning against them). The number one thing most people consider to be the defining factor of being on the left is opposition to the economic system. But simply being opposed to capitalism tells us almost nothing about what a person believes. They might be socialist, communist anarchist, want a participatory economy or my preference, a resource based economy. Trying to figure out where someone is on the left right spectrum isn't really useful in determining what they think about what the system should look like. The right also has variation in the pro capitalist position, for example, what level of regulation vs free markets should be supported. Trying to place these things all on a single axis is impossible, as it's not like communism or anarchism can be considered more or less to the left. Also, during 2020, many people on the left went along with authoritarian measures which is completely contradictory to what the left used to represent. Many leftists actually found much more fundamental similarities in beliefs with people on the right during this time. When you share core beliefs with people on both "sides" you soon have to question just what it is that these terms even mean. This is why I think it's a dead concept for any serious analyst. You can just say I'm in the center because I have really strong convictions that go in line with people on opposite teams. It just doesn't work.
@larryag99 also, I think you should reassess what you see as the ruling class. We don't have a democracy or a republic. The will of the people, despite what we're taught, is not what's written into law. The ruling class has all kinds of ways around including "we the people" in the major decisions, from lobbying to outright corruption and crony behavior. The ruling class are the people with all the power and they also judge most of the wealth. So the people have very little ways of overcoming this dynamic. I do believe that if we exposed it for what it is we could get back to a place where the people were the power structure, but we're a long way from that. But the center of my political beliefs do recognize that this is necessary which is why I lean towards a resource based economy and some anarchist ways of thinking. Anarchism is a system where the power really does lie with the people who voluntarily congregate The channel Anark has some great videos describing it

But on the issue at hand, I think you're simplifying this too much. Most issues are NOT binary. Most issues have a variety of interconnected or opposing interests. The ruling class are the people with all the power and they also judge most of the wealth.
So the people have very little ways of overcoming this dynamic.
I do believe that if we exposed it for what it is we could get back to a place where the people were the power structure, but we're a long way from that.
But the center of my political beliefs do recognize that this is necessary which is why I lean towards a resource based economy and some anarchist ways of thinking.
Anarchism is a system where the power really does lie with the people who voluntarily congregate

You're right. It's divide and conquer and it's working quite well.
But on the issue at hand, I think you're simplifying this too much.
Most issues are NOT binary.
Most issues have a variety of interconnected or opposing interests.
Trying to put things on a single axis just doesn't work.
The main thing that people use the term leftist to describe, their opposition to the system of capital, barely tells you anything about what they believe.
Are they socialist, communist, anarchist, believe in participatory economics or a resource based economy?
Which of these things are furthest to the "left?"
I think you can see with this one example how being on the left tells to almost nothing about what they actually want.

I think that all to often many folks are unable to explain the "why" behind their position. If they can't explain the why, then they are simply indoctrinated into their views.

When I was watching, almost half of the 70 or so comments were from you and none made sense because you don't even refer to what you're responding about.
