- Today AD takes you to Manhattan’s Upper East Side to visit with the inimitable Shonda Rhimes for a tour of her posh new apartment. As the driving force behind a chain of hit series, most recently 'Bridgerton' and 'Inventing Anna', Rhimes is one of Hollywood’s most successful and inspiring creators. In designing her brand-new New York City apartment, Rhimes sought a space to write, create, and continue to build her successful Shondaland media empire - something she achieved with AD100 designer Michael S. Smith. The home is full of places where the single mother of three can decide to work (or daydream) as inspiration strikes. “I’m building an entire sort of universe in my mind, but I’m also trying to think of a series. It’s not just two hours, it’s not just 30 minutes; sometimes it’s 18 seasons. You really do need time and space to think about it.”
'Inventing Anna' is available to stream now on Netflix. Season 2 of 'Bridgerton' debuts March 25th.

Shonda, the female African American bust in your dining room was created by my aunt, Myrtle J. Williams, a talented African American artist. How WONDERFUL!!! On behalf of my Aunt and our family, I thank you for your purchase and exceptional taste in art.
This is exactly how I imagined Shonda’s house would be. So much personal style and color. It’s grand and traditional but still very cosy and livable, and I loved how she mentioned many rooms were thoughtful for multiple uses, which is how many of us are thinking of our spaces in 2022.

I watch a number of channels featuring architecture and design. The most unusual thing about Ms. Rhimes apartment is that it feels like a HOME. Enjoyed this video.
This has got to be one of the most beautifully decorated apartment. I’m an interior designer so I have an appreciation for great aesthetics, and this is by far one of my favorite. My hats off to Shonda and Michael J Smith for an outstanding job. Enjoy in good health!❤️❤️❤️

Yay - gorgeous home - she and her interior designer are a match made in heaven - she's not afraid of color, pattern or texture so her home actually looks visually interesting, personal, warm and inviting. It's a showcase because of the quality of the finishes/materials but it doesn't look/feel like a museum or an ad for a specific furniture maker/brand. Kudos on a job well done!

Michael Smith has a lock on recreating that old NY money style. I love how casual she is about it. That laid back attitude screams old money, as well. LOL
that was actually beautiful AD, love this house, and love the personality that Shonda shows in decorating her house. a lot of people with a lot of money love to keep walls white and all the furniture white and that is kinda horrible ngl, so love that she has some really good taste when it comes to not only art pieces but also colour palletes :D

Unoriginal and bought. Which is fine. Celebrities can buy anything they want.Thet have multiple homes in which they don't stay long. They buy, sell, they are not attached to their homes. Is it beautiful? Yes. But it's oh so perfect that it looks manufactured and without a soul. It shows that it is not her forever home.
The kids room is my favorite. So chic yet whimsical with the powder blue. The masks in there are so cool too. Definitely in my top 5 AD tours!

This made my heart quiver. Elegant taste. The choices tell me classy, seemingly formal, yet witty (the art). Also, the juxtaposition of muted, soft decor colors in the home of a woman who writes dialog for so many outspoken characters tell us Shonda is multi-dimensional. Like bold and soft know how to harmoniously coexist.
If I was blessed to be invited to Ms. Rhimes apartment, it would turn into a three hour tour, as I lost myself into those lovely paintings, and soaked in the beauty of it all.

Well, THAT was a generous tour. Well thought out, comfortable and cozy. I clicked on it because I guess I’m a fan (and read her book about saying yes 👍🏼 for a year). She has an outstanding art collection , ( now I’m going to be really into wallpaper ) and also loved how she had the lighting. The Murphy bed TV was a good thought as well (with its own bath 🛁) . I really enjoyed watching this video. It gave me such a sense of joy seeing Shonda Rhimes sharing her space. I could not help but think this lady has perfected her craft, and now she is enjoying the fruits of her labor w/ her kids. .. going from mom kitchen ,to recreating a kitchen of her own that brings the same joy she had as a child is pretty spectacular.

Blown away by the beautiful wallpaper that seems to pull many of the rooms rooms together. Especially the paper in the living room. A gorgeous choice! Having recently moved I am about to become a wallpaper freak. Thank you for the inspiration and the tour of your beautiful apartment!
Ok but why is nobody talking about how messy the pieces where put together or maybe they didn't age well
This apartment is not only beautifully styled but warm and bright and so interesting. The glass cabinets in the kitchen are very smart. The wallpapers are beautiful and the paper in the kitchen adds such a pretty focal point. I could go on and on about the stunning lighting fixtures and the artwork and just everything!

I absolutely love the warmth in all the spaces. I am amazed that all the prints and patterns work so well together in a surprisingly understated way. Exquisite art selections. Incredible! Love it so much.
