I'm always learning from you Dan. Thanks for the video!
You're welcome, Wichita. Glad you are around!
I love watching the fish eat this stuff.
Yep. Wild-type bettas, Aplocheilus and Epiplatys are especially fun to watch. They stalk them and then jump to grab them from the plants.
Wow
:)
So the Africa shipment is actually happening. Saweeeeeet! Can’t wait to see the fish. 😎👍
Word from the exporter is that they should be here November 1st. I'll believe it when I see it, but that's what I am prepping for.
I just started fruit fly cultures a few weeks ago, thank you for sharing
You got it!
so happy for you .i know you have been waiting a long time for this order. i learned from this video what is in the fruit fly media.cheers
Thanks reel!
Cool! I haven’t done fruit fly’s for years. I need to do this again.
They are easy, and fish love them!
Put 'em in the fridge for a few min's. Slows them way down. I culture winged fruit flies. Be careful though, there's a fine line between slowed-down and slowed-down forever.
I would love to see where you store them, how you keep mites away, your rotation system etc...
Suzie, I don't really do anything to keep mites away. I just keep them on a regular shelf with no mite prevention whatsoever. In my experience, I only have problems with mites if I have grindal worms, so I stopped keeping grindals years ago. As far as rotation goes, I just start new cultures as soon as the old culture blooms. That way, I always have plenty of cultures producing at their peak.
Bahaha that is the picture of anxiety for me. Glad to hear that the African order is on the way
I'mma invent a fruit fly spa just for you, Thomas :)
Ha Ha ha ... Big challenge ... Great video
But I was wondering ... Doesn't the media start smelling after awhile!!!! How long it can last
One of the reasons I love the Repashy superfly (no, I'm not sponsored by them or anything like that), is that it does not smell until the culture is crashed. If you harvest regularly, the culture can last a month or so if you put in a good amount of media to begin with. If you don't the flies will poop a ton in the culture and it will sour quicker. Also, the flies will die and their little rotting bodies will sour the culture. So, if you harvest regularly and keep the population in the culture down, you are good to go for a while before you have any strong smell. In fact, the cultures will usually dry out before they ever smell.
What about feeding them, if you have floating plants I expect they get on them and escape? maybe you put them in a container in the fridge first to slow their metabolism?
More, I have tight fitting lids on all my tanks. The flies can't get out. I just shake them into the tank, close the lid, and I'm done.
Dan do you put holes in the lids for air. Obviously plug holes with sponge. And do you sell them
I prefer to just buy the containers with the perforated lids...they are dirt cheep if you buy them in quantity. I don't sell them, but you can buy them here: www.joshsfrogs.com/containers/insect-culturing-cups-and-lids.html
How do you feed the fish without the fruit flys escaping all over the house?
These are flightless fruitflies...otherwise, there is no way it would work.
do you keep your cultures on diatomaceous earth to prevent mites from getting to them or do you find that you use them faster than they can get a mite infestation?
Nope, I am lucky enough that I don't have mites. I did have them once years ago. They came in with grindal worms and eventually got into the microworms, the fruitflies, the micro mealworms...everything. I had to get rid of everything and try again several months later after all the mites died out. It was a nightmare. Good to know about the diatomaceous solution. How does it work?
you just spread some out on a tray and put the tubs on top of it. The mites can't cross the diatomaceous to get to the tubs. It is like crossing a field of broken glass to them
Ah, good to know. Thanks for the tip!
Hmmmmmmyeah... I still don't like creepy crawly thingeys.
Maybe stick to the small pellet foods, eh?
Yeah I don't care for politicians either.
I use microworms and that's as far as I'll go! for now.
I hear ya!
