It was a regional spinoff of Montana Raillink owned by the Washington Corp. which owned both. They bought Soo lines Kansas City to the Twin Cities main line and also into Chicago. The I was for Iowa and Illinois, the M for Missouri and Minnesota the states they served. It was actually called I&M Raillink reporting marks were IMRL. They lasted about five or so years then they were bought by Iowa Chicago and Eastern, IC&E. IC&E was a part of Dakota Minnesota & Eastern and after their stretch of about five years CP bought the line back which now owned Soo Line. Lot of turnover on this line in the last 20 years.
@@jefftoft5568 I think if the feds had acted sooner as Conrail came along, they would have Conrail take over the Milwaukee Road and the Rock Island - and there would have been two true transcontinental railroads from New York and Philadelphia to Seattle and Los Angeles. But if that happened, both the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific would have faced bankruptcy. Plus the CNW and Soo Line. Lots of railroads the government screwed over in many years.
Those Dash 9 K5s still sounded so good back then... that unit was probably just a couple years old when this was taken.
Absorbed by Rail America and later bought by another multi regional group. They still run engines with TP&W reporting marks.
Thank you for posting this brief look back into history.
Your welcome!
Really liked the look of that nose on the NS engine. 👍
Yeah, I like NS. My Dad worked for them.
