I was somewhat wary at first because I like the woodstock version of this song. But turns out better if you watch the entire thing. when pete does the bird man again you almost believe it. I wish he wasnt so self conscious of his age and just let it fly. He became a sortof garage hanging out old guy rather than when he was younger he really was an ARTIST and far out. Not a guy with a beer gut. My feeling is that he and led zeppelin have spent too much time with the modern hard rock/metal community who have lionized him and them.
words can't describe how amazing pete is. he's almost 62 in this, and he still has so much speed and power. How many 62 year olds can windmill 3 times in a second?
how many 30 years can do this..we are becoming machines ....AI.........the cat is out of the bag...LOOK WHAT HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN BODY..LOOK AT THE CROWD AT WOODSTOCK..TRY TO FIND AN OBESE KID
Incredible. Pete reworks this already great song and makes it great again. Give Zak Starkey credit for keeping up, he interprets Pete's play second only to Keith.
some major humpage goin on john..with Pete. I agree. Do people realize how much is goin on here in terms of R N R guitar. Im not goin out on a limb when I say Pete Townsend is the GREATEST GUITARIST EVER. thats right i said it BETTER THAN JIMI. Pete has the soul of R N R searing thru his veins. People aways say ya rythm player...no I say both lead n rythm..the best to ever plug in
I love seeing people that consider Pete the greatest. I've been convinced for years. Not only the best, but the most intense and aggressive as well. It's never scripted with Pete, or The Who for that matter... Brilliant.... still!
~ I don't know why people like you talk so much trash on Ringo Starr. He's a great drummer, always has been. He is perfect for what he plays, as is his son.
Love this version. The band really misses John. The "thump, thump, thump" of his thunderous baselines undergirding Pete's raging guitar is just so obviously missing.
Whew!! Lose Keith Moon and Go grab Ringos Boy to Rock out SPARKS, Ha Ha, Great Rendition Though anyone reading this go check out The Loon on Woodstock Sparks 19 mother@!#$ 69, What a Drummer!
Well this demonstrate two things: number one, Pete is a hell understimated guitar player (just like Brian May) and two Zac overpassed his old man Ringo...
The reason Pete's never been properly recognised for his playing is because he was backed up by 2 great musicians in John and Keith and the legacy they left behind but you are right, one of the best live guitarists of all time in my book.
Pete Townshend live in his prime can not be expressed or fully demonstrated in a video, like Keith Moon. The combination of chaos, melody, aggression, sensitivity and physical extravagance had to be experienced in the room/arena/stadium. When Allen Klein advised Jagger to shelve Rock n Roll Circus “You’ve been blown off your own stage” it was simple fact.
I don't think there's a bad version of Sparks out there and Live at Leeds is arguable 1 of the best live albums to date with a incredible version on it.
Incredible. Pete reworks this already great song and makes it great again. Give Zak Starkey credit for keeping up, he interprets Pete's play second only to Keith.
1965-1975, the best decade for rock music. Nothing since compares to that decade of music.
John W i never thought about that, but that’s very true
The best piece of rock music ever written.......no other band could play this...
ABSOLUTELY TRUE, AND LATER GENERATIONS WILL FINALLY UNDERSTAND IT
I agree completely ... this is one of the most epic 5-6 minutes in live rock history.
incredible version: some nights Pete is "on", and here he is really "on"

Nobody has been able to recreate Pete's windmillling. He's a one off when it comes to that. Very difficult thing to do.
how many 30 years can do this..we are becoming machines ....AI.........the cat is out of the bag...LOOK WHAT HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN BODY..LOOK AT THE CROWD AT WOODSTOCK..TRY TO FIND AN OBESE KID
genial, fabulous, brillante, the great Pete, the best, viva the who !!!!!!

Wow, just wow. Something about this song that just takes you away. Pete nailed it!
This was SUCH a good gig. "Eminence Front" from the same show absolutely rocks OUT!
Speechless and blown away !.
My hometown is Toronto. Never missed them once in the last 35 years. I replay old stuff, simply amazing. But then Pete keeps it going... Crazy!!!
Cheers here’s to THEWHO & Toronto 🎸
The Master of the AXE!!!!!!MANY CONCERTS...MANY GOOD TIMES!!!!!
Not within a thousand miles of the Woodstock version, but pretty fucking good!
Damn Pete,,,,seriously great
Incredible. Pete reworks this already great song and makes it great again. Give Zak Starkey credit for keeping up, he interprets Pete's play second only to Keith.
I was at this show ! Thanks for the post!!

Zac is a great drummer .....
It's amazing coming from a poor family and all.
Better than Keith.....

baliscotsurf could not have said it any better myself !!!!
what a night!! 10 days after they had to cancel one minute in to a show because of Roger's throat
Yes!!!!!
townshend is a beast!!
the genius of Pete Townsend
Ringo taught his son well!
Keith taught Zak when he was very little
+umajunkcollector Ringo ??? he doesn't know a drum kit from a tool kit ,
Zak is in a class of his own.....
~ I don't know why people like you talk so much trash on Ringo Starr. He's a great drummer, always has been. He is perfect for what he plays, as is his son.
The Who from 69-71 cannot be topped. Even so, Pete seems to be a better guitarist in 2007.
Pete!!
Pete es el mito viviente del rock
Love this version. The band really misses John. The "thump, thump, thump" of his thunderous baselines undergirding Pete's raging guitar is just so obviously missing.
We do miss John. But the problem would be remedied if they mixed Pino's bass at a reasonable volume.
And brought in another basist (or two) to add back in all the harmonics John played.
I love this song
genuis
Pino Palledromini ....or similar....on bass!!
I'm Sayin Hell, Just better with age though cant help Wonder what would be like if Moony Alive
A fuckamazing !!
keith made the music interesting, he wasn't just some stiff out there trying to be perfect
Fantastic performance almost ruined by manic video editing. I had to close my eyes.
Whew!! Lose Keith Moon and Go grab Ringos Boy to Rock out SPARKS, Ha Ha, Great Rendition Though anyone reading this go check out The Loon on Woodstock Sparks 19 mother@!#$ 69, What a Drummer!
Pete's got a real Louis Ck vibe going on here...
+Matthew Aubertin Pete showed him how to do it!
hmmm... lol
I love the Strat, but this is just not the same without the Les Paul...
What effect does he use?
Well this demonstrate two things: number one, Pete is a hell understimated guitar player (just like Brian May) and two Zac overpassed his old man Ringo...

Brian May is not underestimated and Ringo's work and legacy is unsurpassable, fact
Some nice Jimi syle here
is pete better than when he was in his prime?
Then wouldn't 'now' be his prime?? :-)
He's amazing

The Woodstock version of sparks is so much better
It;s good too, but I like the Live at Leeds version the best still.
Absolutely Jeff.
Summit in Houston 76
~ Doesn't make this one bad, it's just the Leeds one is in a class of its own (along with the Woodstock performance).
I don't think there's a bad version of Sparks out there and Live at Leeds is arguable 1 of the best live albums to date with a incredible version on it.
