We are using Writing Strands this year and so far so good! We are really enjoying it! I did buy the Teachers Companion, however, I do not believe it is necessary. I honestly have not used it yet. Thanks Janelle 😁
We'll be using some vintage writing stands. I found a set of 5 on eBay for really cheap. Since this world is a little crazy at to time, we needed a really strict homeschool budget!! I'm hoping the vintage it's like the newer ones
Would you share what books your student is reading to go with this? Are there weeks the reading book isn’t finished and you still go one with the curriculum? Thank you!
We started 7th grade with Writing Strands but it wasn't a good fit for my daughter so we switched to EIW a few months ago. Still doing the reading portions in Writing Strands but doing so much better with her writing using EIW.
My struggling writers have done better with Essentials in Writing or the Structure and Style for Students from IEW because of the video instruction that comes with those two curriculums.
Did essentials in writing 8, switching to Masterbooks writing strands for 9th...would the reading be English 9 literature?( were required to have lit, comp, writing for English 9) LOVE your videos..thanks so much
Such a good review! We have a spelling program that we love and want to continue. Does that conflict with this program? I thought I saw a description that there was a spelling component. Thanks again.
How would you compare this to BJU English. Right now I'm wanting to add in extra writting/grammer for my 4th grader. I currently use MB LLFLE which I do love but seem to want a bit more for them. Have been wondering if I should add BJU 3 or WS 1. Any input?
If you want more writing and grammar then I'd suggest going with BJU English 3 (but then you would not need to use LLFLE. It would be overkill to use 2 English curriculums for 4th grade.) I'm not sure about adding WS to LLFLE. You might want to ask that question in the Moms of Master Books Facebook group.
The reading section covers literature concepts and applies them to Bible passages that the student reads. In addition, the student is suppose to be reading a book (of their choice or one you choose as the parent) that will be used on the last day of the reading section. I hope that make sense.
What are your thoughts so far? I’m considering using it with my 5th grader next year. I really love the reading portion and especially the Bible part of it. Do you feel it’s a strong curriculum? I’m looking for something not so intimidating for me and I feel it looks that way. But I also want something strong. I’m not a great writer. I have a feeling if given the opportunity my son can be a great writer!
It is a good curriculum. Easy to use for student and parent. Breaks writing down into doable chunks. That being said, I will probably move her into Essentials in Writing next year.
This is super helpful, looks like a good curriculum.
Thank you for these overview videos of homeschool curriculum! They are so helpful 😊

My 5th grader is using beginner 1 and we love it.
Ty for the review Janelle!
Hi Thanks for the review of writing strands. I'm trying to decide on essentials in writing or writing strands for 7th grade. Which one would you pick?

Thank you for your review. Would you recommend this over EIW for a STRUGGLING writer? We need basic, I am sure he is not going to be an editor.

I'm not understanding the reading section. Is there a list of the assigned books to read to complete the reading assignments?
The reading section covers literature concepts and applies them to Bible passages that the student reads. In addition, the student is suppose to be reading a book (of their choice or one you choose as the parent) that will be used on the last day of the reading section. I hope that make sense.

When it has the reading portion, are they reading a book you choose or books in the Bible?
The curriculum has them reading a portion of the Bible PLUS they are suppose to be reading a separate book on their own.
Thank you
What kind of reading do they do besides Bible in Writing Strand.
You add in your own literature selections.
How is this compared to essentials in writing?
My kids and I prefer Essentials in Writing or Institute for Excellence in Writing for upper grades.
