I come back to this many times...as a former student, of Mr, North, it encapsulates for so much of what is impossibly beautiful about Mr. North's playing, the clarity of expression, richness of tone and the elegance of the interpretation...what a gift!
Sometimes I wonder how It had to be,living in the medivial time.Poor without work belonging to a low class in society, but I could have listened to this beatiful music ?? No ?....😊
Baroque lute is maybe my favorite instrument but I did hear that good joke that you spend half your time tuning the lute and the other half playing out of tune.
Mejor solo escuchar. :)
In about 1988 I had a (guitar) lesson with Nigel on this piece. The guitar transcription was in A so with the lute at 415 we could play it in unison just fine. I think we spent most of the time correcting the changes made by the transcriber ...
I wonder where they placed the microphones to achieve such an amazing sound. It sounds like they are close to the instrument, but cannot be seen anywhere. Could they be built in? There is also very little reverberation, considering that he is playing in what appears to be a church. My compliments to the ones responsible for the video!
+Jens Paldam I forgot what it's called but it's a certain microphone, mostly used in theatre to pick up audio from long distances yet, retaining high quality.
One of the few lutenists who cares about sound quality and very diverse articulation - chapeau bass! I'm a guitar player and I've always been put off by the poor sound of most lutenists I've listened to... imho, many lutenists don't care about sound, and what you hear sounds like the sound of a cheap $10 kid's guitar. In addition, a very long "stylish" reverb that effectively kills the beauty of lute bass passages and introduces nightmarish chaos to performance ... Weiss's compositions are so spatial and multi-layered that worrying about the sound, bass suppression and articulation seems to be one of the performer's most important priorities.
Une musique géniale, écrite par un immense compositeur et improvisateur contemporain de J.S. Bach servit par un musicien exceptionnel au talent immense. In english... sorry because it is not a good english. A very great music, written by a very great composer and improviser who was a contemporary of J.S. Bach which is play by an exceptional musician for very great talent.
One of the world's greatest performers, playing in an awesome setting, with great audio engineering and camera work, but the video is spoiled by horrible editing. Go to school somewhere, anywhere, and learn what a fade is, and get a clue about when and why to do a transition between views.
Very nice. I think Weiss is one of the best baroque composes for the lute. I love Bach too death, but for some reason i don't like his pieces on the lute or guitar. Bach works much better on the violin/cello/organ.
A perfect video - lighting, sound, setting . . . and playing. Bravo.

Calling Nigel North a "lute player" or even a "lute virtuoso" doesn't do him justice - he is a true artist.
much more.....he is and has been for many years absolute world class !!!
i will never forget in my life several concerts in Utrecht, Stuttgart and Heidelberg !!!
settle down he really flubbed alot
Such a joy to listen to this wonderful music. I will soon be ordering Nigel's third Weiss-album.
I was 5 feet away from him when he played at the Marymount Loyola University was amazing!!

this was composed a few hundred years after that time
This is a world class musician my friends.
Felicidad
He is the master:-)! His gesture in the music or way of playing is so unique.
Nigels right hand technique is definitely not mainstream. But his sound and interpretation is first class. Bravo Nigel!
your music makes me clam and relax, such as I noticed that silence everywhere around us. Thank you so mush , Nigel ! I love your performance !
After a long year of tuning he finally got a chance to play/
Only 3 months of tuning, it was 9 months in the repair shop.
it takes

Jay F. Exactly!
Jay F. I used to play 13 course lute and I confirm it’s not so long to tune. But little bit more than a ukulele! 😜

A sheer joy to listen to such clear articulations!
Browsing 'music for pleasure' on Spotify brought me to this magic
Everything that's brilliant about Nigel, Weiss, and the baroque lute.
Weiss finally comes alive in the hands and mind of this Artist.
Tout est beau ! la musique,le luthiste excellent,et enfin l'instrument magnifique ! quel régal!
Lovely setting, beautiful music and masterly playing!
Nigel North plays Overture in B flat by Weiss
Excellent . Thank you
Very fine playing, and the lute appears to be a very good one.

録音技術と録音環境がすばらしい。マイクは何処?
What is the catalog number of the piece which this overture belongs to?
¡Bravo!
Bravo!
Excellent playing! Who made this wonderful lute? Anyone know?
Lars Jönsson, Sweden.
Great
Angelical!
What's the name of his instrument?
Is that a Renaissance ou Baroque lute?
Reginaldo Assunção baroque
:o
This is great, but his Weiss albums are better.
How many strings that the lute used?
13 pairs

For an interesting and not dull performance listen to Barto or Cardin.
I hope he tuned it before coming onstage, those thins take days to tune properly.
stop finally spreading this bullshit....

please do not compare these 2 divine composers !!!
play stair way....
It sounds like it was in A major.
Historical tunings often make use of a lower pitch standard than A=440. They are at least a half step lower.
Sublime!
