      @@druidkhan6066 yeah they did, but no one knows who that first guy was, saw somewhere some British officer saying about one of his brigade going over the top, but no name or anything is given.
      and also the german didn't really want the truce to end, even after Christmas, some of them would just sit on top of the trenches and sing, despites the warning from the british they refused to get down, and the brits were like "well we can't just shoot them in cold blood like that" so the truce continued for awhile, and they actually tried a bunch more times, on easter sunday and so on. but strict orders were given not to ever do that again. which is the following christmas' didn't have the same thing.

      I don’t think a lot of people realize that WWI was the first kind of modern war which is what made it so terrifying for the soldiers. Last major war they had was fought with muskets

    • @kevincass9917
      @kevincass9917 4 года назад

      @@emorynguyen1583 Not quite. They had bolt action rifles, but they still fought in the Napoleonic styles of war, big formations with bright colored uniforms, cavalry charges and cannonades. If I recall, the last major war the "Germans" fought was Schleswig-Holstein.

    • @emorynguyen1583
      @emorynguyen1583 4 года назад

      Lord Alkair I said the last MAJOR war, and that’s exactly what I was saying. WWI was the first war kind of modern war. The veterans from the Napoleonic wars and American civil wars would’ve been the grandfathers of the men who would fight in WWI. They grow up with this idea of what war is like which is an adventure and full of pride. When the war started many children lied about their age because they wanted to join. the fighting, and recruiting officers being desperate often turned a blind eye. Like 500k in the UK alone were child soldiers. Of course no one realized what they were getting themselves into. This was the most major turning point in warfare. The first use of machine guns, very advanced artillery, tanks, and much more. At the beginning of the war didn’t even realize they that they were supposed to stop wearing bright color uniforms, or even wear helmets. The idea of wearing a helmet seemed almost primitive unless you were a cavalryman to protect yourself from falls and clashes with other cavalry. They realized they needed helmets because of the mass use of artillery which killed many not even with a direct hit but by sending debris at the enemy. The French wore blue and bright red uniforms almost identical to how they looked in the Franco-Prussian war and every military began fighting in the Napoleonic linear formations which were effective in the age of the musket, but not in this new age of warfare. I mean, WWI was a shock to the men who fought in it. No one was expecting it to be like this

    I don't think this video will ever not get me. World War 1 was just so senseless, and all the soldiers knew it. The events in this video are dramatised but they essentially are historically true. More than 16 million people were killed in WW1 and literally no one got anything out of it, except WW2. They had to start dehumanising the enemy to keep people going throughout the war. The real costs of the events of 1914-1918 are still stacking up to this day.

      The events are not dramatised. This actually happened. But the truce lasted a lot longer than an hour. It went on for days. By all accounts they were in and out of each other's trenches and just having a high old time. When the news got back to the powers that be, they were told they would all be court martialed if they didn't get back to fighting but (and this is the good bit) they just fired over each other's heads!

    "My name is Adolf."
    Actually, Hitler wouldn't have been on those lines. He was actually Austrian, not German.
    But in all seriousness, that day must have felt like paradise to those men. When the war started, everyone was cocky and thought it would be over so quickly that they'd be home in time for Christmas. Months later, they're suffering PTSD in a freezing cold trench, injured from bullet wounds and shrapnel, having not slept for days because of the constant bombardment from cannons, covered in bites from rats and fleas, and feet swollen, cracked and blistering off due to months sloshing in frozen mud and blood.
    They spent the day treating their wounded, giving each other shaves and haircuts, exchanging gifts from home (drinks, treats and freshly knitted socks were more valuable than gold in that particular setting) and playing European football. Truly, that day must have felt like paradise to both sides. Neither of them started the war, none of them wanted to be there. If it weren't for the bureaucrats, everyone there would have been happy to ditch their rifles and go home right then and there.

Compared to a parent that can come off as being too harsh (especially as a teen). But try to remember the good times you had together. As long as you know they loved you and you feel they know you loved them you don't have to be too sad. They would want you to be happy and would feel bad if they saw you are currently sad because of them. It's okay to mourn, but your grandpa would want you to be happy when you think of him.

Some subjects I'm left leaning like healthcare(the BRILLIANT NHS) and on others I'm slightly right leaning(zero tolerance on violent crime).
    America is a young and somewhat immature country politically, but eventually it will catch up with Europe and have a multi-party system and rid itself of the ridiculous and, frankly, undemocratic Electoral College debacle. Obviously, and I say this as a fan of our great American cousins, you are stuck with Presidents like Bush jr and Trump. I love America and it's because of this love that I worry for you so much. • @mortisrat
      @mortisrat 5 лет назад

      Unfortunately, human nature being what it is, someone else would most likely have risen in his place. Maybe someone more aryan, less crazy, more competent...
      Hitler did not form the Nazi party from scratch, it existed before him. The political climate at the time was ripe for that sort of leadership and it would have happened whether or not it was him. Had he been shot in WWI it could just have easily turned out worse.

    • @25dimensionsfrancis42
      @25dimensionsfrancis42 5 лет назад

      @@mortisrat Yes i was aware of all you say. I was just playing a game i often play that of "what if" and as with every human being we can all have an influence on other peoples lives. The suggestion was Hitlers particular influence and what difference would it have made if Hitler had indeed been killed in WW1 .The possible scenarios are too vast to cosider.

    About the news, I agree. Both sides are biased in some way (sometimes its subtle, sometimes its glaring). The truth is always somewhere in the middle of the madness. It's never as horrible as one side says, or as wonderful as the other one says.

    Even in ww2 most people wasn't evil Nazis as is propaganda or as you seem to think.
    This doesn't mean that those people didn't do "evil" things. Evil IS war. For both sides.
    War is such a unimaginable monster that most people now have no idea how minuscule and meaningless anybody is compared to it.
    That is why any human semblance in war is seen as such an important mark.
