The “catch” to the master is that like he said, he gets stronger with every individual hit you deal to him. You mostly used high damage single attacks like megabonk and hammer, so his attack only increased by 1 or 2 per turn, but if you had jumped more or used partners like Bow to attack, he would have got stronger much faster.
