  • In this video I talk about the basics of audio mixing as well as take a look at the Mackie ProFX12v2 mixer. This audio mixer is a fun small mixer that can be used to mix sounds. I talk about aux out, monitors, eq, and hook the mixer up to my Nord Stage 2 and my Yamaha Montage.

    Thank you for this video! We got a new soundboard and, since I've got a good ear, thought I could help out. I got sent home with some links to vids on the particular model and a manual. It was Greek to me. Fast forward a year without messing with the soundboard, I found a Mackie for a good price and wanted to see reviews for it. Here I am sent here by Google (thank you, Google, for doing something really right!) and you have explained it in a way that makes total sense to me! I'm just thrilled to bits right now. 👍🏼🙏🏼🙂

    Wow, thank you. I watched two other review videos of this and the 8 channel version and neither person in those videos were able to do what you just did, which is show someone who doesn't have access to one of these whether or not they want to buy the thing!

    I have the 16 track version of this board and I like it, I wanted sweepable mids too. Here's a gain setting tip, because it's not volume per se, it's more like how much of the signal one is letting in.
    Tip: to set the gain, hit the PFL/Solo button on that channel so all one hears and the only thing the board is taking in is the gain level. Then, sound check it with the solo button on and watch the meters as you sound check, shouldn't go too much into the orange lights, I record on a reel-to-reel analog multitrack machine, so I set those gain levels to just touch into the orange lights on the "Main Meter" lights, or just touching into +6 on those meters, tape saturates well where digital DAWs do not. And then take off the solo button and adjust volume from there. I find this to be very useful in setting gain levels for varying mics, be they dynamic or condenser or ribbon...each has its own sound quality and response level...and this keeps one from getting overly gained sound on their mics. Volume and gain are not the same and one shouldn't be leaning on gain settings to get the volumes they're looking for as it will distort the sound and can make mics and instruments sound bad. Once one sets the gain that way, it's done and faders can be used correctly as needed for volume input.

    One feature mackie doesn’t have, as I just found out is no dedicated USB output fader. So if you are running USB out for say a livestream, you are only able to boost your volume output with a channel gain. USB is prefader. So you won’t have a very loud volume when streaming.

    I have the ProFX8 V2 and I noticed that the gain control knobs don't have any affect when using the line in jack. They "only" work when using the XLR jacks . Does your unit work the same way ?
    Also thought it was interesting that the word "Mackie" can't be found anywhere on the unit. There's a reason for everything ... hmmmmm.
    Thanks

    I agree with you about the faders on yamaha mixers,I personally have the one(MG10XU,which btw is a great mixer) that doesn't have faders,cause they really felt cheap to me.Those faders on the mackie really looks nice and all in all a very solid mixer I will biy soon.Are Onyx pres on that board?It has to be,otherwise why is it called PRO?

    Hi, do you think getting a similar mixer will solve my problem described below?:, and if not what do you suggest:
    I would like to record my jamming/performance, live, using my looper but I am struggling to get the set-up/connections right. Can anybody help me please?
    I have the following devices in my rig:
    TR8S
    Rubix22 audio interface
    Boss RC505 Looper
    Yahama Keyboard PSR-S910
    Mac PC running Mainstage as my virtual DAW
    An electric Guitar
    A powered external speaker for Mix-Out/Overall output
    I want to be able (to somehow) get all my outputs/sound from the keyboard, guitar, and TR8S routed into the Boss RC505 Looper to capture for looping and layering.
    I have tried all connection combinations/permutations but have not yet gotten a clean and satisfactory result - the outcome signal/recorded or looped sound I get is of poor fidelity, and “peaking”(and gradually distorting). This I suspect is because I am feeding in signal/sound into the RC505 Looper from Mix-out of the powered external speaker. This is the best connection I could achieve but not good.
    I do not want to use DAWs like Garageband/Logic, etc, for my recordings. I want to use my physical Looper, or any other physical device instead, for that matter.
    So your suggestions and tips along this line would be greatly welcomed.

      I bought the MG10XU and im really happy with it,great mixer,BUT I wanted another mixer in my arsenal and I opted for Mackie,mainly because of the pres I needed Onyx pres ,cause they are praised a lot.Love the D Pre in Yamaha mixer too,very solid,clean with little charachter(whoch is great),but I am looking for different sounding pres,so my second choice after the MG series is Mackie ProFx.Ok so as to what to buy,Ican recommend both,but probably you need only one,Yamaha has compressors,Mackie doesn't.More fx on Yamaha.Listen you can't go wrong with both.I would say get the Mackie.

    • @ManCaveTechnology
      @ManCaveTechnology  6 лет назад

      Hey.. thanks for watching. Yes you can definitely use it to record. It has a USB connection that will output the master stereo channels. So it is obviously not as advanced as some IO's that have a lot of channels in and out but if you're just dumping two channels in or are recording layer by layer it's not an issue.

    • @mrknockknock1
      @mrknockknock1 7 лет назад +3

      It really depends on what it is that you're looking to achieve. If you wanna be able to record 5 to 6 people, sure, this mixer will work. If the band has more people than that, you might have to make compromises, as the number of inputs are limited. Apart from that, the EQ is super warm, the faders are smooth and sensitive, and the effects engine does have some usable effects. Don't really think that this mixer will fix every single patch though. If you don't have good quality microphones and cables, output speakers, audio editing software etc, then this mixer won't exactly help. It doesn't have the ability to enhance shitty input and output equipment, nor can it be 100% clean. If it's one of those noisy, alternative rock bands, then chances are, there will be lots of clipping, in which case, if you have an audio editing software to use for post production, you can get rid of that. But the mixer, by itself, cannot be an omni-worker. Keeping that in mind, if you think you have everything else that is required for your project, then go ahead and buy this mixer. It's a fantastic piece of work, and very economical too. If you require more inputs, then go for PROFX16V2, or PROFX22V2, or PROFX30V2, if you want to stick to this series. Otherwise, if you are willing to spend a lot more money, go for a memory-layer based mixer, like most Yamaha mixers. The only trouble there is that they're super expensive, and consume a lot of power. And if there's ever a problem, maintenance and repairs take time.
