I'm gonna take every positive thing back I've said about the movie if they didn't pay honor to techoblade in the movie, I don't expect them to show something like that in the trailer, but as for the final movie, if there's no reference or at least mention of Technoblade, that would be genuinely disgusting and tasteless
While I can't say my hopes are too high after seeing the trailer, the only thing that might completely ruin the movie for me personally is if they don't have the old hurt sound effect somewhere
i was wondering what about it was bothering me outside of the obvious, i think you hit the nail on the head 😭 it really does look like it’s an ai generated image, like it has this really uncanny look to it that i don’t like
it's especially weird to me because- at a large scale, it works. that huge arch in the opening? i would LOVE for that kind of thing to generate in vanilla minecraft, where the structure is visibly made of huge weathered cubes made of smaller cubes even from a distance. but when you get close up, and stuff starts going smaller than the 1 meter grid, and even below the scale of stairs and slabs, into Chisels-and-Bits territory- THAT's where it breaks down and starts being uncanny. it's a similar issue with the trees, but they have the additional problem of having all of their blocks kind of overlap and melt into each other, going beyond even the Dynamic Trees mod. overall the result is just extremely uncanny, even if you ignore the absolutely horrendous mobs.
I thought this when I first saw it. Then second time watching it I noticed that the sheep only has 3 legs (the fourth one would have to be off the body to be hidden behind a different leg), and I'm genuinely considering that it might be.
This is the most sane take on the teaser I have seen yet. Mumbo seems really excited by it, while everyone else I have seen has been saying nothing but bad stuff about it. I think the movie has some potential, but I'm also not the biggest fan of real life people in a minecraft world. I hope the rest of the movie will be slightly better though.
agreed. mumbo seemed like he was hesitant to say anything negative because he understands the effort theyve put into it, which i understand. you could kinda tell in his voice he wasnt saying everything he wanted to. everyone else is 100% negative. this is a great video with some great takes.
There's a reason the majority is shitting on it. Nobody expected this to be liked by absolutely everyone, I mean look at the reach of the game, and we all understand this. I personally understand the team and artists behind it too, as I've been into cg, 3d, animation, conceptual drawing / illustration and learning how productions actually function for more or less 15 years now. I love movies, I love games, I love the art of them so I've tried doing everything by myself to varying degrees. And you know what I think? It sucks. As it stands it shows no respect for its audience, source material and it's not even trying with its premise. The actual "developers" of the movie, the people working on it, aren't to blame for corporate and higher up decisions just like in videogames. You don't see a videogame, book or work of art in general get a pass on the basis of "the work behind it". The people working on it are getting paid and continue to make connections. The majority reflects the average opinion, and that says people didn't like it very much. You can bet your sweet pp multiple employees have rolled their eyes a thousand times by now hearing the stupid decisions the higher ups have made and given to them as work to complete. The movie has "some" potential in the same vein a new generic adventure Hollywood movie does, as in existing thanks to overdone tropes and operating in things we've seen before that are hardly related to the game at hand. So far. By the looks of it. "Real people" doesn't even scratch how bad they've butchered Minecraft visually here, it's like they're trying to piss people off. Again, saying this as an artist. They're ditching the whole point of Minecraft by trying to smooth out every surface and make it all realistic when you damn well know a faithful adaptation with just photoreal lighting and good animation would suffice in delivering what the majority expected. And I seriously hope you don't give the movie a pass when it ends up being an exact copy of Jumanji or every generic thirst anime ever with its inciting incident and subsequent boring storyline / extreme character caricatures.
@@sonolumiechoJust because something took a lot of effort doesn't mean it should be seen in a positive light when it's simply bad. The Minecraft movie is ashamed to be Minecraft. There's no way of putting it. We respect the effort that the animators did, but we cannot respect nor deny the fact that it's crap.
Ye I think it was refreshing to see a more mature take on it, 1 in a 1000 on RUclips here. But also the negativity actually makes me feel a little better, to know that people won’t stand for this corporate mush. Cause if people don’t stand up to it, the industry will just keep pushing for it. They don’t care about creativity, it’s all about the money to them. But at the same time I am 99% convinced the negativity is all just talk and everyone will end up watching it in the end. Which will be even more detrimental, it will just reaffirm to the industry that ‘people don’t know what they want’ and they’ll continue with their crap. I for one will stick by my principles and not watch the movie unless there’s gonna be any changes made, but i doubt others will
I noticed it the a few seconds into the trailer and it’s just another nail in the coffin for this movie. Too bad that such a great game is getting such a terrible movie. Hopefully we get a similar situation like what happened with the sonic movie
@@plasmq2850 that'll be a legality issue with them putting on the marketplace. if it's under microsofts control they're gonna want to profit off of it, sadly its just how things work.
@@ChunkysDead382 too bad none of the money goes to stampy, and straight into the silver lined pockets of the microsoft execs. don't buy it, or do, frankly that's up to you but surely you've got better things to waste money on than a world made by someone who doesn't even get paid for their work.
10:45 All the way back in 2014?!?!? I know things have definitely changed since then, but the fact that you expressed your concerns with live action over a decade ago and they still kept with it despite fan and creator feedback is crazy.
what makes me sad is that Minecraft will never have another shot to make this right. fixing the visuals, changing the story, casting better actors, including iconic RUclipsrs, and truly making this a fan celebration of over 10 years of Minecraft. Not just a b B-grade kids movie with over the top humor and random pop songs that play every 5 minutes.
Unlike the sonic movie, where only 1 character's design was changed, the whole movie needs to be reworked. That's a lot of time and effort that the directors really don't want to go through, unfortunately. I think the best way to resolve this issue is if the community comes together, bringing all of the iconic RUclipsrs, and make their own animated movie.
@@piggycelerygamer2323not even “don’t want to go through”, they literally can’t at this point, it would be pointless. They can’t rework any of it, they’d need to make an entire new movie.
Honestly this made me realize why the negativity is so strong. This feels like a movie that would release 1-2 years after the game is out. Not for Minecraft being out for 15 years with an incredible amount of history.
Honestly, I would rather have a Minecraft story-mode movie than this live-action thing. Minecraft story mode has so much existing lore that they couldn't use plus Minecraft story mode is getting a reassurance that it would have been great
Stampy’s optimism really brings back my hope for this movie. Although this teaser hasn’t been the most alluring, along with the internet having a field day with poking fun at it, I appreciate Stampy’s input and I’m hoping that all the work being put into it and all the great people working on it make it a movie worthy of being THE Minecraft movie that fans have been looking for, speculating about, and waiting for for a long time.
theres a reason 😂 for it they spend 42000000$ on the movie and have all the modern tech but cant make a movie 1 / 10th as good as something they made in the 80s there was no fake explosions and fake parts of the movie like og mad max they used tnt to send the night rider out 😂 nowadays you get a cpu addin orange fire effect.mp69
@@minekush1138 I agree, in our times movies have these massive budgets and fans really hope to be get a great movie but they end up flopping, especially video game adaptations. The one that comes to mind is the recent Borderlands movie from earlier this year. Insane how such a budget with so much time and such anticipation went down the drain with that movie. Which is where we see the criticism for the Minecraft movie. Many people want animation for it, even in the font of Minecraft Story Mode if that’s possible. Ultimately, we can only hope at this time that so many resources are put to good use.
I think that the Minecraft movie should have been animated instead of live action. The actors look like they are green screened in and the animation would make it look better. Thanks Stampy!!
I feel like if they’re going to make a minecraft movie, just make it in the style of Story Mode or the game trailer animations. it’s been proven the style works already and is less “uncanny”
The Minecraft title update trailer animations already have a super crisp art style that remains really nice and quality. I don't know why they didn't go harder on that sort of style.
you're the first person ive seen who also noticed the backlighting, especially in that one exchange with jack black. that detail really took me out of it too!
This movie was definitely meant to be animated, it just doesn’t make sense to bring minecraft to live action - I’d honestly just like to watch a polished studio version of minecraft story mode
you certainly have a more optimistic take on this teaser than the others i have come across. i’m right there with you; even though the stylistic choices are questionable, it’s really rather unfair to judge the whole film just off the teaser alone.
Maybe they should learn how to make teasers and trailers finally. You know, the whole "teaser killing its film" routine Hollywood absolutely loves doing. Or maybe the advertisement and promotional team had nothing else to work off of. Because essentially everything about the movie so far stinks, not exactly a single aspect they brought to light accidentally.
Mumbo Jumbo also had a really optimistic take on the film (mainly because he likes the director, but a good director can’t always save a film if it’s gone through production hell (just look at the hobbit movies)).
Okay I know the trailer is really bad, so we're all making the joke of apologizing to Minecraft story mode. But to drop the irony for a second, those games were still quite bad. Like genuinely some of the worst writing I've ever seen, a movie adaptation of that story would be positively horrible.
The lighting is SOOO off, glad you noticed too! As a bit of a cg nerd, I believe they have bleached the background with too much light to ammend to the harsh physical lighting they r stuck with. Making it look jarring. Also the realistic style is reminiscent of the original sonic trailer ):
Minecraft movie could’ve been very special considering how in my case it helped in me during not so happy moments in my childhood. And I think a lot of people can resonate me on that. A lot kids getting bullied or horrible home life were genuinely helped by minecraft youtubers to get through their problems. A movie based on that experience would’ve been very special.
You know, i always imagined what a minecraft movie would be like, i always was so excited for the idea of one throughout my childhood/early teenage years. I no longer wish for this, nor was this what i was imagining. People gave minecraft story mode so much hate, you know maybe we shouldve been grateful for what we had
I can't lie, I also wish it was a fully animated film with voice acting instead of live action elements. I've always preferred animation to live action. I'm glad Stampy decided to make this video! It's always great to hear his thoughts on Minecraft things!
it wouldve been nice if they kept these actors and just remade them in the minecraft story mode style, then we can have them but not have it look weird
I could see them being turned into what skin they would take on after going through the portal and also I am surprised they don't have like normal minecraft skins like why would minecraft not do that and then sell the characters on the market place, I think they are missing out on that
"ChatGPT, make me a teaser trailer of 1 minute and 20 seconds following 4 diverse real life characters in an isekai like plot in the world of Minecraft while having Jack Black as Steve."
To be fair, diversity feels like an important thing to have in a Minecraft movie. They did everything terribly yes, but the Minecraft community is incredibly diverse and a Minecraft movie should definitely reflect the diversity of said community and how Minecraft players really are. The only issue with it is that it seems like they were trying to go more for diversity points than ACTUAL diverse representation of the real Minecraft community. I'm so upset that they had the potential to make a wonderful movie reflecting the experience of Minecraft and they made this absolute shite. I hope they cancel it. Usually I say anything is better than nothing, but this would definitely ruin any chances of getting another actually good movie for Minecraft.
@T13GUY Nah, to hell with that, they're always trying to shove woke society into everything, and make things 'diverse'. I'm expecting there to be tons of mainstream memes being played out, too. Hope this 'movie' is taken down before it airs.
i appreciate this reaction so much :’) it truly makes me sad that so many og yt creators that made the minecraft community what it is today won’t get to have little moments in the film similar to what the fnaf movie did for us :( after the success of mario i really thought this movie would similarly go full animation.. not minecraft jumanji😭 but i’m still gonna have fun with it regardless, still means a lot ! plus watching a stampy video in 2024 truly made this good day even better ❤️
the backlight was something i never thought about and you're the only person i know that talked about it. a really good catch and now that you talked about it, i can't help but try to figure out where the sun is
The thing is, cinematographers, even in live action films, plan around back lighting actors, if you watch almost any films. If it’s outside, and there’s sunlight, the actor is backlit, regardless of narrative. A great example of this is a film like Knives out: glass onion, the light is so shaped because throughout a 10hour day, the sun moves, so you plan around that fact and have the actors, where possible, backlit. Steve Yedlin, ASC even says in a podcast that he did a similar thing on Star Wars as audiences will tell if an image looks “bad” but won’t tell if the light switches directions A similar thing is present with a film like ready player one, and that doesn’t look as strange as the minecraft move even within its CG sections. It does have to do with the lighting style, but less so as a result of the backlight itself, and more as a result of the quality of light being much softer than if real sunlight was wrapped around someone’s face. The contrast would be closer to 3 stops rather than the current 1 stop or even no stop ratio An audiences direction of light only really matters in wide shots, and when a source is clearly visible (like a window) but outside of that it can change quite a lot, and typically does on purpose, to make the story run smoother and to allow for actors faces to be visible at the right point in the story
Honestly the fact that this movie has apparently been in development for over ten years kind of explains the direction they’re taking. It kind of looks like they’re making this for Minecraft’s 2014 playerbase rather than the one we have now.
I know that they would probably never have done this but I wish they made Herobrine the villain, it would be a great bad guy for the kids watching it and the adults would relate to having him in the film.
I’d have to disagree. Considering that Mojang had a hand in this, I don’t think they’d include Herobrine anyways, since he doesn’t fit into the lore, and one thing to note about this movie is that it’s playing into the lore, thanks to that piglin tank that made an appearance
I wanted Castaway scenario. Man wakes up on the beach, near the crushed ship, thin beard, tan, ragged clothes and no memory, in frustration he punches rotten tree and uses its branch and some stone to make a ax, makes a shelter, at night he wakes up and when he looks out he sees a monster made of moss that explodes killing him instantly, he wakes up on the beach but it's not a time loop, his help sign is still there, and when he goes to place his shelter was there is a create but no corpses, the stick that went through his chest is pinned to the ground but there's no blood, he decides to not think about it and to protect himself, feed himself and something tells him there's no help, so he goes into the wilderness. Good old school adventure movie, main character says barely anything for 30min, he meets wierd natives who speak gibberish not resembling any known language. No Minecraft aesthetic, pixel art any of that just nods to the nature of minecraft's world. It could go into ridiculous territory like wes Anderson movie with Steve having desert on one side of the screen and tundra on the other being mindfucked as to how, but also capable of real horror the night or other dimensions in Minecraft can be.
@@neoncat6820 was about to mention that "the island" actually does the whole "irl person in minecraft" thing REALLY well i wish that got adapted as a film 💔
10:10 100% agree. I also think a majority of the audience would cringe at these jokes. Most kids and even adults now play or have played Minecraft so making a 'big deal' of what we perceive as really normal or mundane Minecraft stuff would get old quickly for me. I think there are better jokes to make that would land better with this audience. And non-Minecrafters or parents can just accept this fantastical world, and can react surprised in their head without needing the characters to react for them.
Also the minecraft animation sphere is full of popular, high quality fan work that is meant for the same audience (I think its safe to say kids now access youtube and 'creeper? Aw man' is popular enough you know revenge has been seen nearly a billion times) So I can absolutely even see kids who play this game hating on it. Why does that leave? Kids who don't play this game who just went cause their parent's saw a kids movie to stick em in front of? While I am now an adult, with child siblings and their friends, they all think this is weird.
I think part of the issue is they're making the film for two audiences: Critics, and families. The critics don't know minecraft, many parents don't know minecraft. They should be making the film for us, the minecraft fans.
Either way it's not gonna do well critically. Whether it's for the shoddy visuals and bad writing, or just critics hating fun, there's just no good side to stand on.
They should do just like how the Sonic movies did. Make a movie where everyone can digest, and have easter eggs in the background for the hardcore fans
My opinion is that the RUclipsrs should have been consulted, because without the RUclipsrs Minecraft would not be where it is today. People like Stampy practically built Minecraft and introduced the game to so many people.

@@Mailpaper06what about it looks horrendous? The sheep? The derpy animal that’s already derpy in the game? @@Plushtonium I disagree with that too. Steve has always been a silent protagonist. I think a fully animated Minecraft movie with little to no dialogue would’ve been beautiful, like Wall-E was.
@@thetruebadevil exactly, it feels like steve is gonna be changed to this character with a big funny personality, not to be one of those nostalgia blinded people but i really think they should leave steve as that, like how he wasnt in story mode
He's a little.... too round, having a hairy chubby guy was actually a really good choice for steve, but imo Jack Blacks figure doesnt give off that muscular chubby guy that can punch a tree with his bare hands. More of a cuddly bear type of character. Neither does his energy in the trailer, I feel like he would've done much better as a villain with that energy.
I think the perfect plot wouldve been to recruit Minecraft RUclipsrs who install a mysterious mod and all end up sucked into their computers and have to band together to escape while using what they know about the game to battle the elements, and have them be fully animated. There is still potential but they would have to give it a different name. They did it with the Ghostbusters reboot after the 2016 bombed
omg imagine in the first part of the movie the youtubers are just living their everyday lives, taking care of their kids (aka dantdm and his kids) and although they still make minecraft videos, its less prominent now in some of the youtuber's channels and imagine one youtuber is reminiscing their old minecraft video like the mod showcases and even though its cringy, they had fun doing it and maybe they found the mysterious mod send by someone who is anonymous or that its the one mod they never did get to showcase in the past and they decided to bring in their youtuber friends and do some minecraft mods for old times sake when the mod is installed and they started up the game, they suddenly got sucked in All of them get surprised and panic panic panic
@@aletheaxl I think additionally we have a plot twist that it was one of the RUclipsrs featured who created the mod and got everyone there in the first place due to his/her/their boredom with the real world. The trailer looks good, but I think it should’ve been animated - seems like uncanny valley when it’s live action - I think element animation should’ve done it as they perfectly encapsulate all the aspects of Minecraft in their animations
im not a regular viewer, so i wasnt sure what to expect from this video. but i think you have the most nuanced level-headed take about this teaser ive seen yet.
The thing about it appealing to people who aren’t Minecraft fans is weird to me cause it’s an ip movie, it only exists because Minecraft is one of the biggest games ever so there’s a market in appealing to those fans, like I really don’t see people who don’t care about Minecraft watching this

I personally like the creeper in the movie trailer. Because in Minecraft directly, the Creeper is like meant to be blended into the grass because it's green. And im so happy that the creeper was made to be like it's game counter part.
My idea is the movie focuses on a relationship between a parent(s) and their kid(s). It would be also cool if they sort of did the Lego movie where it is live action at first but then it becomes animated for most of the film. •The parent is not use to a free roaming video game where you can do anything. Some parents are used to a game where you must follow a quest or a mission. •Somehow their souls get stuck into the game and in order to get out they have to defeat the ender dragon and go through the credits (and this is where it all animated). •The animation is like Minecraft story mode where it gives the in-game characters more mobility. When in Minecraft, the mom/dad is unfamiliar with the world while it’s the kid’s domain and knows how to survive. •There can be a reference/joke that Minecraft can sometimes be a horror game. •Includes some Minecraft RUclipsr legends like Stampy and DanTDM Basically in a way it is like The Lego Movie and still Jumanji.
Very solid analysis. I will watch it when it is out on streaming but more than likely won't while it is in theater's. I think going the animated route would have been better. Putting it in the style of Minecraft Story Mode would have been awesome. For example I loved the way the Lego Movie was done. Side notes: I believe I remember back in the day Jack Black and Stampy meeting. Felt like world's colliding. Minecraft is on every platform now. I have been playing Stampy's lovely world on my Samsung Fridge (not really).
This is sadly way too far already and changing it would be way too much for them to do, but yeah wish they wouldve gone with an adaptation more like mario did being more true to the games or something more story mode rather than live action
I think this movie is sadly kinda doomed from the start, just by the fact they decided to make it a live action hybrid. An ideal Minecraft movie would be it being animated like the games new trailers, or at least just any type of fully 3D game style animation. I'm just disappointed it isnt looking good
Tbh when it comes to love action vs animated. Why not both? I feel since the main crew are from our world it'd make sense they are live action but Steve(jack black) also being live action doesn't. And we know Jack black does well with voice acting so it'd be fine to at least make Steve animated because we know he can handle it.
Yeah I love Jack Black he has great vibes but he just doesn't look like Steve and no man does, because it's MINECRAFT. They gonna make me dislike a Jack black performance ;-;
Super great to hear the opinions of someone who studied film! I felt the characters seem detached from the world, but I couldn’t figure out why. Now I understand!
While I'm not too hopeful it's really too early to tell. I think it really comes down to the tone of the film. If it doesn't take itself seriously at all and leans into the surrealism of it then it could definitely work especially with the cast they have. If they try to tell a serious story however it will end up a complete disaster. Regardless it would have definitely worked better animated. It's also important that the internet hive mind doesn't decide its opinion before the film even releases. Also love seeing you bring in your film knowledge with this video certainly comes full circle from the early days of content like inhaler man.
love your commentary stampy! i agree, the lighting was something that stood out to me the most when i first watched the trailer, i found it really broke my immersion. comparing mcsm to this movie, storymode will always be goated to me even with all its flaws just bc of nostalgia, and bc i love an apocalypse story AND i like that its animated and takes place within the world of minecraft (with references to things like the farlands), but this movie hasnt even come out yet so its not possible to be making judgements on the plot LOL
Mamoa looking practically like he's in drag is what's got me disappointed in this whole movie thing. ALEX IN MINECRAFT IS A FEMALE. What are they doing here??
@@wheresmyspegit Really? I remember Alex originally being Jeb and once everyone caught on to the misconception they eventually retextured his skin to have female traits. Steve for the boys and Alex for the girls y’know? I’ve fallen out with minecraft for a long time now so maybe i’m wrong idk
I agree with you! The movie should have been animated cause (no hate to jack or the other actoes who did a good job) but just because of the fact that it mixes real life with minecract while minecraft ≠ real life which makes it kind of weird imo... Also the lighting throws me off and i aint a movie expert but it distracts me.... Still it aint as bad as other movies i watched but i hope an animated version comes out with minecraft characters instead of jack wearing a blue shirt with a greenscreen behind him and tons of light. mc Story mode is actually how imo it should be. Purely focussing on the game and not real life. Still i dont mean hate towards any of the cast and jack Black, i think i just have to get used to seeing real life people into a sandbox block voxel game
The really sad part is no matter what we wont get a fully animated one, if it succeeds they would find no use in making an animated one, if it flops they probably wont revisit an attempt at a movie.
I'd honestly love to see someone make a texture/resource pack for minecraft in the style of this trailer. It does look very cool visually, it's just not that much like Minecraft. It could look really cool to play in though, especially with raytracing and some of the more recent upgrades to lighting like that.
This is a really good video. I reallt appreciate the honesty and detail here mate. I would love to see more analysis style videos like this. Looking forward to watching the film myself. You should do a watch party and stream it ha.
Imagine in the movie theres a 'hall of heroes' or something like that on one of the villlages and you just see a bunch of minecraft youtubers. And then you just see a cat and a squid in some of the photos
would be a nice way to make references to minecraft legends like dantdm, stampy, and i hope technoblade aswell. nothing too big just little way to show how they appreciate these creators for kinda kickstarting minecraft
I completely agree with your perspective Stampy, though I might not be as optimistic as you haha... I think they completely fell short of the majority's expectation, or rather hope. I can't stop finding animation issues, and it makes the whole project feel lazily done, like they aren't giving it their all. Most noticeable are that the sheep and llama have eyes too glossy for the environment, and don't match up with the lighting on their coat. The teeth are also way too real to fit in the halfway animated halfway real type of look they have going on. Basically, it's the same issues critics found in Sonic's first design. I don't really like any of their wardrobe or stylistic choices as far as the live action characters go, and I can already feel a vibe of poor script writing. I also noticed the backlighting issue, and it honestly really bugs me...
im so glad you pointed out the constant back lighting, because it was the main thing i noticed with the main characters, though it's meant to separate them, i feel it completely darkens their faces to where it doesn't feel like the main focus
I agree Dantdm sounded like he was compromised in his opinion. His cheerleading for the trailer seemed very questionable. Maybe he has a cameo. He said he was invited to the set
Exactly my thoughts. Dan is bias about it because he went out to the set and met the people, wheras Stampy is actually being brutally honest about the movie and how it's not looking too good
“Im not in this film” that by itself makes storymode better

The minecraft movie kind of looks like when you ask AI to make a minecraft image and all the blocks are different sizes
i was wondering what about it was bothering me outside of the obvious, i think you hit the nail on the head 😭 it really does look like it’s an ai generated image, like it has this really uncanny look to it that i don’t like
It really does look AI, especially the animals. I’m sure I’ll get used to it but for now it just seems a little wierd and unsettling
it's especially weird to me because- at a large scale, it works. that huge arch in the opening? i would LOVE for that kind of thing to generate in vanilla minecraft, where the structure is visibly made of huge weathered cubes made of smaller cubes even from a distance. but when you get close up, and stuff starts going smaller than the 1 meter grid, and even below the scale of stairs and slabs, into Chisels-and-Bits territory- THAT's where it breaks down and starts being uncanny. it's a similar issue with the trees, but they have the additional problem of having all of their blocks kind of overlap and melt into each other, going beyond even the Dynamic Trees mod. overall the result is just extremely uncanny, even if you ignore the absolutely horrendous mobs.
I thought this when I first saw it. Then second time watching it I noticed that the sheep only has 3 legs (the fourth one would have to be off the body to be hidden behind a different leg), and I'm genuinely considering that it might be.
THANK YOU! I knew something felt off, but I couldn't put my finger on it until you pointed it out.
Ye I think it was refreshing to see a more mature take on it, 1 in a 1000 on RUclips here. you certainly have a more optimistic take on this teaser than the others i have come across. i’m right there with you; even though the stylistic choices are questionable, it’s really rather unfair to judge the whole film just off the teaser alone.

It's his version of "I am Steve"
the backlight was something i never thought about and you're the only person i know that talked about it. a really good catch and now that you talked about it, i can't help but try to figure out where the sun is
The thing is, cinematographers, even in live action films, plan around back lighting actors, if you watch almost any films. If it’s outside, and there’s sunlight, the actor is backlit, regardless of narrative.
A great example of this is a film like Knives out: glass onion, the light is so shaped because throughout a 10hour day, the sun moves, so you plan around that fact and have the actors, where possible, backlit. Steve Yedlin, ASC even says in a podcast that he did a similar thing on Star Wars as audiences will tell if an image looks “bad” but won’t tell if the light switches directions
A similar thing is present with a film like ready player one, and that doesn’t look as strange as the minecraft move even within its CG sections.
It does have to do with the lighting style, but less so as a result of the backlight itself, and more as a result of the quality of light being much softer than if real sunlight was wrapped around someone’s face. The contrast would be closer to 3 stops rather than the current 1 stop or even no stop ratio
An audiences direction of light only really matters in wide shots, and when a source is clearly visible (like a window) but outside of that it can change quite a lot, and typically does on purpose, to make the story run smoother and to allow for actors faces to be visible at the right point in the story
Honestly the fact that this movie has apparently been in development for over ten years kind of explains the direction they’re taking. It kind of looks like they’re making this for Minecraft’s 2014 playerbase rather than the one we have now.
they called it "A Minecraft movie" because we all know the next movie is gonna star Stampy and his wonderful world

10 years, it was anounced in 2014
@@quackywhackityphillyb.3005 yea ik I found out later though
All of the actors should’ve just been famous minecraft youtubers
😂uh anyway yeah they do have a lot in common it would seem😂
This man, im sorry LEGEND, has the most friendly voice in the whole world.
You literally just made a script more enticing than the full script studio team for the minecraft movie.
That sounds like jumanji but would be awesome. I wonder what the story is about for this film
omg imagine in the first part of the movie the youtubers are just living their everyday lives, taking care of their kids (aka dantdm and his kids)
and although they still make minecraft videos, its less prominent now in some of the youtuber's channels
and imagine one youtuber is reminiscing their old minecraft video like the mod showcases and even though its cringy, they had fun doing it
and maybe they found the mysterious mod send by someone who is anonymous or that its the one mod they never did get to showcase in the past
and they decided to bring in their youtuber friends and do some minecraft mods for old times sake
when the mod is installed and they started up the game, they suddenly got sucked in
All of them get surprised and panic panic panic
@@aletheaxl I think additionally we have a plot twist that it was one of the RUclipsrs featured who created the mod and got everyone there in the first place due to his/her/their boredom with the real world. Ultimately the way out is beating the ender dragon, so a real Jumanji knockoff but still I think that's the perfect finish.
The trailer looks good, but I think it should’ve been animated - seems like uncanny valley when it’s live action - I think element animation should’ve done it as they perfectly encapsulate all the aspects of Minecraft in their animations
I completely agree with stampy about the visualization, I really feel worried about the outcome and how people will feel about it
im not a regular viewer, so i wasnt sure what to expect from this video.
but i think you have the most nuanced level-headed take about this teaser ive seen yet.
"Hello this is stampy" got my attention IMMEDIATLY
Imagine the big three come in, Stampy, Dan, and CaptainSparklez
Yes! But Hollywood would never.😒
The thing about it appealing to people who aren’t Minecraft fans is weird to me cause it’s an ip movie, it only exists because Minecraft is one of the biggest games ever so there’s a market in appealing to those fans, like I really don’t see people who don’t care about Minecraft watching this
That’s what I was thinking
ALSO! My boys are HUGE MC fans.. ever since either of them could play a pc.. it was their FAVORITE game. My oldest is now in HS and im sure hed want to go see it, we'll make it a family event of course! It comes out around my youngest sons bday! Ive persnally played MC since beta.. and its been a favorite game of mine! And Im a little over 30.. ty stampy and for all your positive vids and etc for my kids! You are a YT icon and MC legend ❤
And my oldest son LOVED YOU.. his favorite youtuber was you Stampy.. he'd watch your videos all the time and wanting to make games like you did! You've inspired him A LOT and got him to be creative and inclusive with everyone around him. His teachers loved how inclusive he was and the games he'd try to make for everyone! He's still awesome and caring today! ❤
Very wholesome. :D
I personally like the creeper in the movie trailer. Because in Minecraft directly, the Creeper is like meant to be blended into the grass because it's green. And im so happy that the creeper was made to be like it's game counter part.
I never thought I would be watching Stampy in 2024. I still have your lovely book from when I was little
It kinda reminds me of the moment when y'all were in minecraft story mode
Sigh, remember those good ol' days?
@@liamphibia yeah man, i was 10
@@eddo3581 Hard to believe it'll be a *decade* old soon. And that was back when Telltale Games were still in full business.
"thank you, stampy" we say in unison
•Includes some Minecraft RUclipsr legends like Stampy and DanTDM
Basically in a way it is like The Lego Movie and still Jumanji.
Cyber bullying saved sonic, it can save minecraft too
No don't
This is sadly way too far already and changing it would be way too much for them to do, but yeah wish they wouldve gone with an adaptation more like mario did being more true to the games or something more story mode rather than live action
@@kamajamalaks The least we can do is get them to add animated characters and remove the live-action ones.
way to late
I'm not sure since this thing has already been passed around multiple times over the years it might just straight up kill it
He actually made a great point about the lighting, i didn't even realize it
stampy reviewing the minecraft trailer was not what I was expecting today but I'm all in omg
I think this movie is sadly kinda doomed from the start, just by the fact they decided to make it a live action hybrid. An ideal Minecraft movie would be it being animated like the games new trailers, or at least just any type of fully 3D game style animation. I'm just disappointed it isnt looking good
i’m an adult now, just a decade ago I was coming home from school excited for the next lovely world video. thanks for the memories m8
Enjoyed hearing your thoughts, I just wish we could have more fully animated blockbusters instead of forcing live action
1:43 andrew garfield moment right here

"I'm not the werewolf"
I was thinking more of matpat
If stampy ends up being the werewolf istg
I’m not the werewolf
i’m ngl the shot of jason mamoa looking terrified as a creeper comes up behind him was so ridiculous and i love it💀
Tbh when it comes to love action vs animated. Why not both? I feel since the main crew are from our world it'd make sense they are live action but Steve(jack black) also being live action doesn't. And we know Jack black does well with voice acting so it'd be fine to at least make Steve animated because we know he can handle it.
Yeah I love Jack Black he has great vibes but he just doesn't look like Steve and no man does, because it's MINECRAFT. They gonna make me dislike a Jack black performance ;-;
Super great to hear the opinions of someone who studied film! I felt the characters seem detached from the world, but I couldn’t figure out why. Now I understand!
To me, it feels like they just watched a bunch of 2014 "Minecraft in real life" videos and then made a movie from that.
It actually feels like that
While I'm not too hopeful it's really too early to tell.
The trailer was so controversial, it made Stampy create a genuine, non-parody reaction video 🙃
love your commentary stampy! i agree, the lighting was something that stood out to me the most when i first watched the trailer, i found it really broke my immersion. comparing mcsm to this movie, storymode will always be goated to me even with all its flaws just bc of nostalgia, and bc i love an apocalypse story AND i like that its animated and takes place within the world of minecraft (with references to things like the farlands), but this movie hasnt even come out yet so its not possible to be making judgements on the plot LOL
Who thought of jack black as steve and jason mamoa in barbie drip 😭
Jack Black as Steve and Jason Mamoa as Alex
Mamoa looking practically like he's in drag is what's got me disappointed in this whole movie thing. ALEX IN MINECRAFT IS A FEMALE. What are they doing here??
@@ericabraz1141they're actually intended to be neutral so it's inclusive of everyone
@@ericabraz1141but i do agree with you, he is an odd choice for the role
It could look really cool to play in though, especially with raytracing and some of the more recent upgrades to lighting like that.
ngl I was expecting it to be like a cross between the Mario movie and Minecraft Storymode with the style but nvm :')
10 freaking years in the making.
im so glad you pointed out the constant back lighting, because it was the main thing i noticed with the main characters, though it's meant to separate them, i feel it completely darkens their faces to where it doesn't feel like the main focus
im so glad you're being honest unlike dantdm was in his reaction.
I agree Dantdm sounded like he was compromised in his opinion. His cheerleading for the trailer seemed very questionable. Maybe he has a cameo. He said he was invited to the set
@@dontgivetwothwips3615 He probably is hiding his true thoughts due to contracts, like being in the movie
Exactly my thoughts. Dan is bias about it because he went out to the set and met the people, wheras Stampy is actually being brutally honest about the movie and how it's not looking too good
You people are so alien like that someone not having your same opinion is being paid, god dang
Please go outside
Yeah, DanTDM disappointed me.
We need a stampy cameo and scene where jack black is in the lovely world
Stampy is like a British moist critical 😭😭
I would’ve loved it if it was animated like Minecraft Story Mode was
