  • I was invited to find gold and tour the most historic Gold site in all of the USA. The Reed Gold Mine in North Carolina. The First recorded gold found in all of the United States. Not only did I get to learn about the history, and tour the site, I also was given permission to pan, in Little Meadow Creek, within the Historic Site, and find my own gold!

I did my masters thesis on the geology of the reed gold mine. I spent so many, many days tromping around here over the course of a couple years, mapping everything to develop a model for the formation of the deposit.

As a resident of South Carolina, it makes me so happy that you are nearby, exploring Carolina Gold. I noticed a display behind you in one shot where they showed a bunch of coins minted from our gold - Charlotte had a US mint for a while, because so much gold was found here.

In the late ‘60’s when you visited you could pan out of the creek. They had piles of dirt and you got a pan full and went to the creek to pan it. It was just a short time until the new panning stations were being built. I didn’t find gold but a bunch of mica and they put a few flakes of gold in my mica filled bottle. I remember how nice they all were!!!

@mary-ruthflores4107 they were always really nice there , I went many times as a child, then took my kids in the 90s - I usually just hit creeks around charlotte if I wanted to play- would head to Thermal City in Marion if I wanted a full day of panning - spent time on Crowder's Creek near Kings Mountain

Wow Dan! My uncle and aunt owned several mountains and homes in NC! Yellow Creek ran right in front of the original homestead on their first property! Other than the undescribable scenery, I sat on the cabin's front porch at night. Guess what I saw that is no longer here in the south? (T Y bug zappers). Across the road was another mountain and the fireflies were so numerous that it looked like a million diamonds flashing on the side of it. It took my breath away.....
Anyway, I sat in several creeks around there and knew nothing about panning then. The thought never crossed my mind. However, I have 3 jars full of beautiful rocks I found in the NC creeks! It's been in my kitchen window since 1999. Maybe I should look at them....?
Thank you so much for the history and tours of an incredible place. To see the gold in your second pan was unbelievable! But, you know where to find it! I cannot wait to see the next part! Hope you find a 10 pound nugget! I'll help you tote it back home..... We can discuss details later.... 😂 Blessings from Alabama ❤️

Great video as usual Dan. I was born in Charters Towers and m y grandparents lived in Charters Towers and the Venus Battery was around 1 klm down the road. We used to go explore the Battery in the early 60's when it was still completely left open. It was left in operational condition and every now and then would be fired up to crush some ore. When that happened, we sometimes would go down and watch it all in operation and we were never stopped when we would do that. Each area we went to, anyone working there would explain what that part of the machinery was doing. They were great days back then and something our children won't get the chance of having the freedom we had back then.
It is now a tourist attraction and all fenced off. Now i would have to pay to visit it during its open hours and wouldnt be allowed to be climbing over stuff like we used to. On one of those early visits we came across a large quantity of mercury in large glass bottles. Of course with us being kids, we attempted to take one home. That didn't work out well, as we were still pre teens and it was heavy. We ended up leaving it hidden at the base of a tree still along way from home. 😅

    Dan,
I knew Carolina's gold history ,but never researched it, so you really enlightened me.
I'm from New Jersey upper pine barrens region, and travelled south through the Carolinas to Florida a number
    of times.
We had smelting and stamping mills over over the State, unfortunately it wasn't gold, it was iron ore.
Fortunately, they supplied ore for Guns and ammo as well as Fulton's steam engines and the Revolution,
with all respect for you modern Canadians, many whose ancestors were Loyalists.
I now live in Ferndale, WA , only a couple of minutes away from Jason's family business.
Too bad I missed that mine area, so exciting.
    Thanks for sharing,
    Cheers,
    Frederick "Rik" Spector

I lived close to that area for several decades, not sure if it was mentioned but the original nugget was used as a door stop.

You would have been my favourite school teacher…. The way you lay down the story for everyone to understand and get into is great….

My family settled near that area in Rowan County. The old home place has several remnants of open pits. Glad you were able to go see the mine!

Welcome to North Carolina! Love this video because it’s so close to my home! You are a real character Dan! I will be visiting this site someday soon! I’ve heard of it but had no idea it was so interesting. Really enjoy your videos up north too! Thank you!
