It takes courage to put your music out there publicly. And no matter how good your music is, some people will REJECT it, CRITICIZE it, even HATE it. In this short video, I offer few decades' worth of advice on how to deal with your critics and get inspired instead of demoralized.

What if you've been playing and maybe singing for a while? You've mustered up the courage to put your music out there - maybe you're playing live, or you're recording and releasing songs, maybe even writing original songs...
Well, you'd better thicken up your skin. Because It doesn't matter how good or even great you are - some people are gonna HATE what you're doing, and in today's polarized social media environment, they're gonna let you know they hate it.
Cuz when it comes to music EVERYBODY has opinions - and they're usually STRONG ones. One challenge for us musicians is that making music is a vulnerable thing to do. Playing and singing are intensely personal. And when you do 'em publicly, it takes almost as much courage as stripping naked - at least until you’ve built your confidence.
But how can you build confidence if you've got haters telling you you suck? Cuz the fear of rejection is real. And rejection can really mess with your head and even stop you from making music altogether.
So today, I'm gonna help you put on your armor and learn how to handle criticism and use it as a motivator. This won't take long, but it's a super valuable lesson no matter where you are in your music career, so stick with me.
So I've been making music professionally for many years. I put out my first album when I was 18. I opened as a solo act for national artists during college. I've produced albums for some really diverse and talented musical acts. Then for a while, I threw myself into raising kids and doing my day job, and making a lot less music. But now, no matter what else I’m doing, I’ve made the choice to be and stay in music. I'm playing live, I'm making these videos, and I'm recording and releasing music consistently.
And guess what? Now I've got HATERS. I think I have a pretty thick skin, but when someone lands an unexpected punch, it still hurts. But... there are some creative ways to dodge the punches, and it really depends on YOU.
I want you to think about the black-and-white arguments you see people having about even the biggest, most successful musicians. Obvious example: one person says Bob Dylan is the greatest artist of all time, another says he sucks and can't even sing. So which is it?
An opinion, no matter how hateful, always says more about the HATER than it does about you and your music.
We know intellectually that the only worthwhile feedback is constructive feedback, not acidic criticism. But there’s a lot of people throwing acid, and most of them aren’t taking risks and putting their own music out there.
So I want you to think of your haters in a whole new way. Because making music, you're competing for every listener's attention.
You're competing against all the music that's even been released. And there's something like 60,000 new songs coming out EVERY DAY.
And then all the TV Shows, the Movies, the visual entertainment. All the books someone might be reading, all the podcasts, the video games...
What I'm saying is - when someone lashes out about your music, it's kind of huge. It means you got their UNDIVIDED attention - enough for them to say something about it - to care. Your music, your ART, generated a visceral response - and ironically, that's proof of its value. Whether someone thinks it's good, bad or indifferent, you got and held their attention, so you won. I say love your haters, get inspired by 'em, make music because you want and need to, and just keep going.

My wife and I strongly disagree on which ice cream is the best, and yet I have never felt the need to attack her entire world view and life choices over it. Negative comments say more about the writer than the subject in ways which I think I can understand, but even though I know this it still really hurts.....respect to you for continuing to climb back into the saddle and ride out - even on the rainy days👍🎸

That’s the perfect metaphor, John, riding out even on the rainy days. I have a herding dog (Border Collie + McNab) who needs to run (a lot) at least twice a day. Rain or shine. She’s an inspiration, too, helping make my skin thicker. It doesn’t matter how I feel or what’s happening outdoors. We’re going! In fact, as I write this, she’s leaning over my iPad, impatiently panting because it’s time to go chase balls…

I think insensitive, critical people would like it if you said, "I am so sorry for irritating you with my lack of talent." But meanies don't deserve apologies. It takes time to build your talents, and some days are better than others. Most of all, it takes guts to put yourself out there. That alone is worth an A+.

Exactly. The A+ for the courage, fortitude and determination to DO IT and keep doing it. I just listened to the This Little Light podcast in which master bass player Flea interviews people about their musical educations. Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante’s interview was all about how various teachers judged his playing based on their own, always limited, musical standards. It ALMOST stopped him from playing music, and what a loss that would have been, at least IMHO.

YUP! Well said! I've always believed, if they hate me, that's good; if the love me, that's good too. If they have nothing to say one way or the other, that's not so good. Thanks for your work / videos.

I enjoy making the occasional "inspirational" video. But sometimes it feels like I'm tilting at windmills - taking on the ills and insults of the music business and the harsh cruelty of the unruly mob on the internet. I've learned to cope with those realities, and this is still just a hobby for me, but I see so many people taking it all very seriously and getting massively discouraged.

Groovy .. good one. .. billions .. of songs.. do I compete to be heard to learn to create ... connecting with it. Tommy Emmanuel said he plays to bring joy to others.. sorta what I'd agree with... I hate some music ... and lyrics ... downer bummer stuff is not in my wheel house so I don't want to listen... this is my set of ears... but I have aspirations of creativity .... not to be heard but sometimes (it is neat) people will hear me play and want or ask me to pay ... that is scary and humbling ... of which I am grateful. worthiness .. interesting element too. tanks

Dylan can be terrible at times but he is still one of my favorites overall. But when I hear someone say Dylan can't sing, I ask them if they ever wrote a song and got onto a Stage to perform it. The answer is always no.
I once had someone attack a RUclips Video I posted and to my surprise, Bernie Hollad wrote a denfense of my playing! (He wrote Diamond Dust for Jeff Beck, one of my favorite tunes) Well That made my day and I then asked him for the Score to his piece and he sent it!
But I also had 2 friends who dissed Lisa Gerrard and Milton Nascimento...so if those two amazing singers can get slammed, anyone can.

"The answer is always no." That's often the crux of it, eh? From what I've experienced, most criticism is rooted in jealousy.

So true, Jack. How often that phrase echoes in my head from the opening track of David Crosby’s LP If I Could Only Remember My Name. “Everybody’s saying music is love… You know it is. ”

everyone sings off key. even the very best, at least a little here and there. this can be proven by a computer analysis. Check out Wings of Pegasus here on RUclips. When i hear someone singing off key, it is a good sign that they are not using pitch correction.

A very helpful video. It does take a lot of guts to put songs out there, or even starting a RUclips channel takes a lot of guts (what will people think about me? Will they hate what I post etc etc). But in the end it really doesn't matter what other people think, the people who criticize are usually people who can't sing, can't play the piano or guitar, they just like to put others down no matter what. Some people really like my songs, some people may hate them. I say ignore the haters, and embrace any genuine constructive criticism. Thanks for the video Robert! 👍

I agree with every word, pb. In reading what you wrote, I had a realization that one reason haters take us by surprise is that most musicians play and sing with the intention of making ourselves and other people HAPPY and of connecting emotionally. That’s true no matter the style of music. Haters make us feel like our intentions have been misunderstood and misinterpreted…

There's something really special about writing and recording songs. I look forward to recording lots more. I don't worry about what people think anymore. Hopefully they will like them, but the main thing is to do the best you can and enjoy the ride 👍@@RobertCassard

@@pbcreative6388 yes! For me, recording (documenting) a brand new song is one of my greatest joys. Once I get the primary vocal and guitar recorded, I often just start exploring and adding voices and instruments. Perfect example…years ago, I wrote a melody to a Sanskrit chant that I sang to my unborn child in the womb. Recorded myself playing the guitar and singing it, then added a second guitar, then kept adding harmonies. I ended up with 10 of my own voice and this is what it turned into:

Have just heard your recording, that's very impressive! Harmonies are difficult to do but I think they add a lot to a song, in this case it was the main part. I try to add harmonies to some of my songs when I can, I think I'm getting better at it! I hope. Recording is very time-consuming though and I haven't been able to complete anything since my last song which is ten months ago now, but I'm working on some right now. If you get a spare 3 minutes, maybe you would take a listen to my last recording? There are lots of over-lapping harmonies at the end, which took a while to get my head around! ruclips.net/video/TT-GCenYd_k/видео.html@@RobertCassard

@@pbcreative6388 Nice job on that song and the vocals, Paul. It flashed my back to some of the early albums by America. Your writing style and your voice remind me of Dan Peek and Dewey Bunnell (who sounded like brothers to me). Keep it up, man!
