Colorism IS NOT a two way street, just the same way any other privilege is not a two way street. Your personal experiences with colorism as a lightskint person are not the same as the systemic discrimination that darker skinned folks face from the own group and the majority group.
That makes sense because I’ve heard Beyoncé say yellow bone in a song. She said “yellow bones”, “red bones” and “brown bones”. I’ve never heard the term yellow bone or brown bone until that song.
Yup Texas has all 3: red bone and yellow bone (I’ve been told it’s about the undertone...) and hi yella. Yellow Rose of Texas was originally penned by a black man.
I’m starting to feel like it may just be a Texas thing bc since this dropped ppl have been like “what is a yellow bone” lol. I’ve heard it my whole life in Texas. A yellow bone is a light skinned person w/ yellow or golden undertones opposed to a red bone which is a light skinned person with red undertones. They’re so close that they’re basically the same though.
@@fangal12 the fact she posted that shit tho and her stupid bf putting up yellow circles. gassing her up while he's still messing with his dark skinned baby mama. this white woman has all the reason in the world to be insecure but don't express it thru racism sis
Hey y'all! I love the podcast but I just wanted to comment on the "yellow bone" discussion since I caught the live on Patreon yesterday. I just wanted to clarify that colourism is NOT a two-way street. While people of a lighter complexion can be teased or made feel uncomfortable, darker skin folks CANNOT change the power dynamics. Colourism implies a difference in power and agency, therefore, people of darker skin cannot be colourist and uphold colourism in the same way lighter skin folks can! I just wanted y'all to know that for the future! xoxo
Well there is javá, which is the equivalent of high yellow with curly to coily hair in the Spanish speaking Caribbean. Also, there are very few Caribbean Latinas with no African heritage. If you did a genetic review of a light skin Black American and a Caribbean Latina that is javá they would have similar numbers. Joanna Hausmann is a white Latina. This woman is not a white Latina. This woman was just tone deaf and I suspect not so we'll educated.
@@buttahp what? So my brother is dark skinned, my other brother is light skinned and im brown skinned. We have the same parents. How would my light skinned brother have closer dna to a java just because hes light? But my dark skinned brother wont when they have the same parents? Thats not how dna works.
Moving beyond whether or not Dani is Black: first off, that wasn't an apology lol I'm not sure why people were calling it that. It was an explanation and excuse making. Also, I can already see she doesn't have a clear understanding of what "colorism" is even though she verbally said it's a thing. "I've never seen this as a privilege" and that's where you're wrong miss lol. Just because you don't view it that way doesn't take away from the fact that you benefit from being light-skinned. Colorism is literally a global issue, which is why songs like "Brown Skin Girl" are so welcomed and songs about being light skinned are seen as problematic; you're basically bragging about your privilege while brown skinned women are trying to uplift themselves and future generations so that they'll have the self esteem to stand up to the prejudices that they'll inevitably face. Now, do light skinned people (specifically in the Black community) have their own set of issues? Yes ( group acceptance, identity issues, outside assumptions of character, etc) but overall their life will be ever so slightly easier because they favor a more globally accepted aesthetic. I'm also glad Angel is self aware enough to recognize her prejudice and is working on it. I think the young lady was better off not making a video at all if she wasn't ready to take ownership of what she did and how it affected others. Like Kev, I've never heard of this person. But hopefully she'll be able to grow and learn from this experience.
First I want to say I’m black but technically mixed. While everything you are saying it true. I don’t want to say that your experience is only what the system wants you to by in most selling out your peoples I had several experiences where white pepper on my job wanted me to say something bc they though it would be better coming from me I told them I wasn’t doing they dirty work. I live in Texas actually in a town was the biggest slave trading place in Texas -‘s racism is still very alive and I will say here it is not the same as other place where my lightness give me preference bc I’m seen as something that shouldn’t of happened . Also think while at larger you are right every dark skin person experience is not the same abs either is every light skin or brown skinned. It’s all perspective. All experience we’ve that make us the way we are some of which become very toxic to us and other. I’ve spent my whole life trying to do the right thing period. Again I want to say at large you are right. I think if we as people in the black community could start listen to each other we would realize our experience with race abs color are more alike than different. And that we don’t have to play The Who it worse game (I know dark people have had it worse on a large scale) we probably could make a difference. All rbis started by blame to racism that we adopted in our own culture bc we take it out on each other. If most light skin would admit it that are victims to bc they accepted the cookie for the “white” man handing them out they are treated just as poorly in private by white propel bc in public lift up to cause division
JoshyGonz...the way you edited that with Angel's I'm-about-to-hurt-somebody's-feelings terminology...kept us on the edge of our seats. So glad I saw it live...lol
I love y’all lol to me though, she doesn’t look like a black woman. She looks mixed/racially ambiguous. We HAVE to stop considering everyone with one drop of black in them black. I probably have that same amount of white in me & I can’t go around saying I’m white. I’m not saying this is what you all are saying though, I’m just speaking generally.
Lol the only reason "black people come in all shapes in sizes" is because apparently anyone with a drop of black is black. If you only considered people with significant black ancestry (so more than just their great great great grandmother's cousin) suddenly black people dont look like literally every race in the world.
In the UK we call u what u are black white mixed Asian no confusion! you have to have black parents or majority black grandparents to be black. We don't have Hispanics here like That we have their ancestors original Spanish folk. To me That girl is actually a tanned Caucasian she may even get called mixed if she is lucky
Okay, so she's a white woman with a tiny bit of color...Dominican or not🤷🏾♀️ her mom is white and her dad is multiracial with a sting of black....hence her 14% "blackness". I mean both my parents are black and on account of the "slave" ancestry I'm about 20% European. That'd be like me walking around talking about I'm mixed or I'm white....I'm not, I'm black. Bligity blig black!!! 😁👌🏽🙋🏾♀️😁
People aren't black or white. Your DNA will not say you are either. Her skin is a shade of brown and she has African DNA, who gets to say that others can deny her the right to represent all of her ancestry?
I watch these podcasts to help fill in the empty space when I am away from my family for long periods of time. Today I am missing my family extra and this podcast helped me to laugh through some tough feelings. Thank you for that!
Love the skin you’re in... Yes. But, the implications of colorism should be taken into account. Ppl really have to address to themselves why they feel the need to mention and always voice that they’re lightskin in the first place. That’s my issue. In addition, brown skin girl is an response to colorism and the treatment of our brown folks. so that would not be the same as making a song about being lightskin. Her response saying she doesn’t she her skin color as a privilege is an issue. I am lightskin myself and Its my responsibility to understand that socially I am perceived a certain way, not that I personally feel that way. It’s important to understand these things so you don’t add to the perception.

Rita Ora is Albanian but grew up in West London. Maybe people thinking she was black is an American thing? Here in the UK that was never a thing. I remember when she first blew up never thought she was anything but white or more specifically Eastern European. She makes "urban" music but that's as close as she gets to blackness.
I absolutely loved Angel’s commentary here. Especially being a darker skinned woman married to a lighter skinned man. So often in Hollywood or real life you see the reverse. 🙃
Angel:“We are still discovering what we can do”
Powerful and true!
Josh *dancing*: You gotta stay in the pocket kev 😂😂😂
The song was a dig at his baby mom that he prefers her light skin over his baby mom dark skin. It was not to uplift her skin tone it was shade about his preference for light skin women. There is NO COMPARISON to Beyonce’s “Brown Skin Girl”
Yall forget she Dominican... if you know anything about how they feel about black people, this shouldn't surprise you.
How white Dominicans and mixed race Dominicans feel about Black people, including Black Dominicans which she is not

She’s a spicy white woman and that’s just that on that ! And of course she would love her skin tone, she has light skin and society has given her no reason to hate it !!!

Yup exactly!
Just like mysogyny and racism aren't two-way streets, Colorism is NOT a two-way street.
Yes it is
Big facts
It is though
@@terseandtiny1746 It isn't. Colorism describes the discrimination dark skin people experience. There is no such thing as reverse colorism.
@@thecupofbrew7955 if a white person faces challenges/prejudice based on their skin it's discrimination not racism. If a light skin person faces challenges based on their skin, it can be called racism or discrimination. Dani isn't black nor does she Identify as as a black woman, therefore she shouldn't be using black terms to describe herself. She is just a light Latino woman who is an obvious colorist and possible racist. She is very insensitive and has no clue about this topic. She should have sat this one out.
She said she identifies as a “yellow bone” black woman in her live IG.
Dominicans are of African decent. The island Hispaniola fought to for independence and rid of slavery in 1804. Dominican Republic separated from Haiti in 1844. I'm saying this as a Haitian myself. I don't agree with the song but dominicans are black or afro-latino.
@@862smokes I get that. But I am an African-American which means there is some European within my DNA but I don't identify as white person. No, when she said she reminded her of her son Sai. I laughed because I've seen both Sai and Kai do that to her. And Angel responded exactly the way she said she would.

That apology was her continually digging herself in a hole, the whole time I was like stop talking girl!
Josh silently singing "Light skin girrrl"...and Angel calling her children glow-worms, actually sent me to my grave. I'm no longer here. 💀😂
Josh and Angel dancing to “Yellow Bone” had me cracking up. 😂
I live in Texas and I heard the term “Yellow Bone” a lot in the 90’s and early 2000’s.
Please also note she's dating a darkskinned man with a darkskinned baby mother and daughter. What does this song message say to his daughter that yellow bone is what he wants/likes? Her song was received negatively because she came from a negative space when she wrote it trying to disrespect the mother of his child and darkskinned women at large
When Angel and Josh started singing the outro - I COLLAPSED. They wanted it to be *over*.😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Let’s not forget that Dani is not Black... so why she « identifies as a yellow bone » (her words) is beyond me.
This part!
That’s the part that confuses me. Dominicans don’t use that phrase so it is very strange
Fédorah dang i didn’t know she wasn’t black
Right, either black men have been calling her a yellow bone all her life, or she's blackfishing.
Why isn't she black?
Colorism IS NOT a two way street, just the same way any other privilege is not a two way street. Your personal experiences with colorism as a lightskint person are not the same as the systemic discrimination that darker skinned folks face from the own group and the majority group.
Ok, I understand that. I was trying to understand why people were saying that it's not, but what you said makes sense. Thank you.
We do say yellow bone in Texas but sis ain’t that. She a whole White Latina. 😒
That makes sense because I’ve heard Beyoncé say yellow bone in a song. She said “yellow bones”, “red bones” and “brown bones”. I’ve never heard the term yellow bone or brown bone until that song.
I’m from Texas and I’ve heard yellow bone, red bone, and hi yella
Yup Texas has all 3: red bone and yellow bone (I’ve been told it’s about the undertone...) and hi yella. Yellow Rose of Texas was originally penned by a black man.
I’m starting to feel like it may just be a Texas thing bc since this dropped ppl have been like “what is a yellow bone” lol. I’ve heard it my whole life in Texas. A yellow bone is a light skinned person w/ yellow or golden undertones opposed to a red bone which is a light skinned person with red undertones. They’re so close that they’re basically the same though.

YES! Josh on camera is EXACTLY what we needed! I'm here for this.
