My great-grandfather, Kurt Engewald, served in World War one, in the Sachsen army, on the Western Front. He was from Aue, Saxony. He was awarded an Iron Cross (Eisenkreuz), which I have inherited. It is great to see what he would have looked like in uniform.
Surprising how much the late WW1 gear looks like the WW2 gear, surprized their was so little change in the interwar period. The popular imagination of the WWI soldier is strongly fixated on that early war uniform, if you showed most folks that late war uniform they would say it was WW2.

Nicht nur die Uniform. In vielleicht keinem Krieg der Menschheitsgeschichte (auch nicht im zweiten Weltkrieg) haben sich Taktik und Material so schnell entwickelt wie im Ersten Weltkrieg. Der Krieg begann mit einer Armee die noch so kämpfte wie 1871 und endete mit allen wesentlichen Elementen die wir dann im zweiten Weltkrieg wiedersehen. Selbst Flugzeugträger fanden ihren Anfang im diesem Krieg.

Да, ещё у них были огнемёты и первые противотанковые ружья

Thank you for the English subtitles! I’m curious why some Germans later on preferred putees to their boots? It seems putees are very annoying to put on and it seems like it could get unraveled easily like if stuck on barbwire.
There are definitely pros and cons. But the jack boots often times got stuck in the mud. Dirt and rocks could enter the boot. Putees are also good in keeping your legs warm, while it gets pretty cold in jack boots.
I always understood it was a cost/material issue. The boots required much more leather and high quality at that. On top of that germany apparantly got a lot of their leather from south america before the war and one of the first things the german state did when adopting to a war economy was downprioritising animal farming in favor of using the grain and vegetables directly as human food. This was efective but not popular among the soldiers and led to a even bigger shortage of leather. Well fitting jackboots are exelent but laced short boots would be easier to get to fit okay even if not perfect.
I think also that it needs to be considered, how often do you need your feet dry and warm and how often do you traverse barbed wire etc. Often comfort was more of a day to day issue over combat.
@@CommissarBooks i always thought jackboots would be a real advantage in the mud as they are at least semi watertight up to the knee. I have only tried the finnish "lappish" boots with a beak but they are otherwise a similar construction and do not get cold if worn with wool pants. (But you have to get ones big enough in the foot. As the shaft is so high dirt getting in is not a big problem. But mine fit snuggly around my fat legs. They are a bit stiff to walk in also. I only remember reading about german soldiers in both world wars beeing chuffed that they did not get a proper soldiers stylish jackboots and tried to get hold of them in all manners of ways. But that might not be how it actually was? On a tactical level the shift to low boots made sence certainley though
As a Brit I've always preferred the latter German helmets and grenades over the British. Lots of people say the helmets don't matter because they "don't stop bullets" and whilst it's true they won't stop a rifle round under most circumstances, they can and did at longer ranges and obtuse angles. Then there's also blunt force trauma, shrapnel, ricochets and flak. Simply the latter German helmets actually are helmets and they protect the entire dome of the head far better than the British and honestly the German helmets are just so good! Grenades I'd prefer the Germans for the distance and accuracy, most soldiers wouldn't get them and often a soldier would only get one and it was expected to be used during the assault so when it's none-none and sometimes one the practicalities of them being bigger and heavier to carry around all day become something of a null issue. Gewehr and Lee-Enfield though mmm the latter is more versatile in just about every way although the former is longer and does have an absolutely insane muzzle velocity.

Excellent video. I'm very interested in WW1, as like many Getman families it is fascinating & tragic to research family history in this terrible war. It's quite interesting the colours & differences, the old colourful imperialist uniforms made a quick exit because of the way armies were kitted out. Like the French Blue / Red that cost them so much in 1914, things stand out in war, but the field grey certainly made a difference. Simple & effective.

Kurze Frage zur Frühkriegsdarstellung: War es auch möglich, dass Soldaten komplett in feldgrauer Uniform ins Feld gezogen sind? Also nicht mit der steingrauen Hose, sondern tatsächlich mit der zur Bluse passenden Hose in Feldgrau mit roter Paspelierung.
Ich habe gerade nochmal recherchiert und in dem Online-Artikel "A Quick Guide to Prussian Infantry Uniform and Gear Changes 1914-1918" folgenden Satz entdeckt "The M1907 trowsers (Tuchhosen) were changed in August from field-gray to the M1914 stone-gray due to dye and dyeing problems, as well as field fading problems that kept the trowsers from matching the field-gray of the tunics. (...) But while the change occurred in 1914, they did not have the ability to produce them until the Fall of 1915." Vielleicht ist 1915 auch hier, wie sonst so oft, das "magische" Jahr, was Änderungen am Erscheinungsbild betrifft....
Sehr Interessanter und guter Beitrag, Anmerkung zu der Standard Bewaffnung für die Infantriesten war das "Gewehr '98" ,wobei die Berittenen Truppen und die Artelleriesten das kürzeren Modell "Karabiner '98" trugen.
Things do tend to evolve quickly during wartime. The Great War was a time of vast change on both sides mainly due to casualties. Part of the reason the Germans changed headgear was because the spike of the Pickelhaube would give away a soldier’s position to enemy snipers and that it offered little protection from shrapnel. The British also were largely unprotected in that area before they adopted the steel helmet. This vastly decreased unnecessary casualties. Basically everything had to evolve to suit the type of warfare that had drastically changed from forming lines and squares in open combat to trench warfare. It’s all interesting stuff and I could ramble on, but I will spare you that lol.
They started the war with a mindset of honorable shootouts. Rows of gentlemen in a grassy field, merely 150 meters apart and volley shooting at the command of an officer. Flutes, drums and flag bearers. Instead, they created a literal hell on earth. Waterlogged trenches serpentined through mangled trees and villages amongst an ocean of mud, corpses, craters, gas, and thousands of kilometers of barbed wire.

Super Video, wie immer. Vielen Dank. Vielleicht könntet ihr auch einmal ein Vergleichsvideo zwischen Wehrmacht, US Army, British Army und Roter Armee z.B. 1944 machen? So wie ihr es schon mit den Deutschen und Franzosen bei Verdun gemacht habt. Ein anderes Thema, welches mich interessieren würde, wäre Waffen SS. (Ja ich weiss, ein ziemlich umstrittenes Thema). Aber so sachlich wie ihr immer die Themen abarbeitet, wäre dies bestimmt auch sehr spannend und lehrreich. Ich wünsche euch allen noch ein schönes Wochenende. Grüsse aus der Schweiz.
Sehr informativ und gut gemacht. Erwähnenswert vielleicht, dass es am Anfang des Krieges noch einige Einheiten gab, bei denen es diverse Abweichungen von der „Standard“-Uniform gab. Es dauerte eine Ganze Zeit, bis die Uniformen ziemlich einheitlich waren. Bei den Franzosen war das Bild am Anfang des Krieges sogar noch erheblich bunter. Auch da kam es zur Vereinheitlichung der Armee, aus den Kolonien kommende Truppen wichen optisch aber immer wieder stark von den Standards ab.

Thanks for this video. It is interesting that the French were not the only army in WW1 to start out with easy to see stuff on their uniforms at the start of the war. I never knew that the German army in 1914 had shiny buttons and shiny belt buckles along with helmets that not only stuck out but told the unit they were in. I bet the intelligence agencies of the allies loved that. Still, at least the German uniforms were not as bright as the French ones were in 1914. Just one last thought. I am so glad that in 2023 many of the nations that fought each other over 100 years ago are now fighting together as a team in NATO. Good stuff.
I would like to see a video on the WW2 tank crew uniforms of both the Wehrmacht and the SS. From the old pictures that I have seen these differed greatly from the infantry uniforms.

It’s really interesting how German soldier uniforms in 1918 look almost identical to German solider uniforms in 1939. It really shows how the war evolved and how the Germans began to really get it right, right at the end of WW1. I feel like it also shows Hitler’s nostalgia for WW1, with how he had the army keep essentially the exact same uniform going into the next war.
Finde das Tattoo super, zeigt auch dass viele Soldaten eben doch kriminellen Hintergrund hatten. Gedrückt wurde sich aber nicht, wenn der Kaiser zur Waffe rief, wurde gedient.

Spitzen Content. Mich würde auch einmal eine reine Betrachtung des Pickelhelms interessieren. Den gab es doch auch in verschiedenen Varianten, so weit ich weiß, bis hin zu Modellen aus reinem Leder, oder habt ihr darüber schon eines gemacht? Hab ich auf die schnelle jedenfalls nicht gefunden.
Interessantes u. informatives Video! Als Ergänzung habe ich etwas zum gezeigten Karabiner 98 beizutragen: Es handelt sich um einen Karabiner Kar. 98a (das erste Gewehr, welches speziell für das 7,92x57 sS-Geschoss entwickelt wurde (später, bis heute 8x57 IS : „Infanterie-Spitzgeschoss“) wobei dies nix mit der“SS“ zu tun hat - die waren zwar anfänglich sehr oft noch mit Gewehr 98, sowie mit Kar.98a ausgerüstet, als die Wehrmacht bereits den legendären 98k hatte. Die sS-Bezeichnung steht aber für „schweres Spitzgeschoss“ - also die Geschossform, welche -bis heute- noch aktuell ist)!
Der Karabiner 98 wurde nicht für die "Patrone sS" entwickelt, er verschoss die "Patrone S" wie das Gewehr 98. Einführung des Karabiners war 1908, die "Patrone sS" wurde hingegen erst 1914 eingeführt. Zur Zeit des 1.WK wurde diese Munitionsart nur an Flieger und erst ab 1918 auch an MG-Einheiten ausgegeben; ein Verschießen dieser Patrone aus Gewehren war streng untersagt. Zur Standard-Gewehrpatrone wurde die "Patrone sS" erst ab 1933. Die Bezeichnung "8x57 I" oder "8x57 IS" ist eine zivile, im militärischen Sprachgebrauch waren das die "Patrone 88" oder "Patrone S".
Thank you for this video, I'm French and I know how much of a tragedy the 1st WW was, at every level. What I can say today is that I'm proud that some of my best friends are German and that France and Germany are trying to build a better future together. I can't wait for a true European army though, that would be the best revenge ever of our two peoples over that tragic history.

During war everything evolve faster. Logistic change, everything is more pragmatical, things are field tested...
U.S soldiers today look no different than they did 20 years ago. So it makes sense for that time as well.

It was. The first M16 helmets we're given to the "Sturmabteilung Nr. 5 (Rohr)" for testing. The feedback was good, so the helmets were mass produced.

Excellent video. I'm very interested in WW1, as like many Getman families it is fascinating & tragic to research family history in this terrible war.
It's quite interesting the colours & differences, the old colourful imperialist uniforms made a quick exit because of the way armies were kitted out. Like the French Blue / Red that cost them so much in 1914, things stand out in war, but the field grey certainly made a difference. Simple & effective.

Kurze Frage zur Frühkriegsdarstellung: War es auch möglich, dass Soldaten komplett in feldgrauer Uniform ins Feld gezogen sind? Also nicht mit der steingrauen Hose, sondern tatsächlich mit der zur Bluse passenden Hose in Feldgrau mit roter Paspelierung.
Moin, Ja bei Reserve- oder Landwehrregimentern war das noch üblich. :)

Ich habe gerade nochmal recherchiert und in dem Online-Artikel "A Quick Guide to Prussian Infantry Uniform and Gear Changes
1914-1918" folgenden Satz entdeckt "The M1907 trowsers (Tuchhosen) were changed in August from field-gray to the M1914 stone-gray due to dye and dyeing problems, as well as field fading problems that kept the trowsers from matching the field-gray of the tunics. (...) But while the change occurred in 1914, they did not have the ability to produce them until the Fall of 1915."
Vielleicht ist 1915 auch hier, wie sonst so oft, das "magische" Jahr, was Änderungen am Erscheinungsbild betrifft....

Sehr Interessanter und guter Beitrag, Anmerkung zu der Standard Bewaffnung für die Infantriesten war das "Gewehr '98" ,wobei die Berittenen Truppen und die Artelleriesten das kürzeren Modell "Karabiner '98" trugen.

Things do tend to evolve quickly during wartime. The Great War was a time of vast change on both sides mainly due to casualties. Part of the reason the Germans changed headgear was because the spike of the Pickelhaube would give away a soldier’s position to enemy snipers and that it offered little protection from shrapnel. The British also were largely unprotected in that area before they adopted the steel helmet. This vastly decreased unnecessary casualties.
Basically everything had to evolve to suit the type of warfare that had drastically changed from forming lines and squares in open combat to trench warfare.
It’s all interesting stuff and I could ramble on, but I will spare you that lol.
It exactly followed the state of Germany throughout the course of the war

Vielleicht könntet ihr auch einmal ein Vergleichsvideo zwischen Wehrmacht, US Army, British Army und Roter Armee z.B. 1944 machen? So wie ihr es schon mit den Deutschen und Franzosen bei Verdun gemacht habt.
Ein anderes Thema, welches mich interessieren würde, wäre Waffen SS. (Ja ich weiss, ein ziemlich umstrittenes Thema). Aber so sachlich wie ihr immer die Themen abarbeitet, wäre dies bestimmt auch sehr spannend und lehrreich.

Sehr informativ und gut gemacht. Erwähnenswert vielleicht, dass es am Anfang des Krieges noch einige Einheiten gab, bei denen es diverse Abweichungen von der „Standard“-Uniform gab. Es dauerte eine Ganze Zeit, bis die Uniformen ziemlich einheitlich waren.
Bei den Franzosen war das Bild am Anfang des Krieges sogar noch erheblich bunter. Auch da kam es zur Vereinheitlichung der Armee, aus den Kolonien kommende Truppen wichen optisch aber immer wieder stark von den Standards ab.

Thanks for this video. It is interesting that the French were not the only army in WW1 to start out with easy to see stuff on their uniforms at the start of the war.
I never knew that the German army in 1914 had shiny buttons and shiny belt buckles along with helmets that not only stuck out but told the unit they were in. I bet the intelligence agencies of the allies loved that.
Still, at least the German uniforms were not as bright as the French ones were in 1914.
Just one last thought. I am so glad that in 2023 many of the nations that fought each other over 100 years ago are now fighting together as a team in NATO. Good stuff.

I would like to see a video on the WW2 tank crew uniforms of both the Wehrmacht and the SS. From the old pictures that I have seen these differed greatly from the infantry uniforms.

I have a picture of my grandfather in 1915, the uniform is identical, with the exception that his Pickelhaube does not have a number
He explained that they removed the number later, cos it's too noticeable.

It’s really interesting how German soldier uniforms in 1918 look almost identical to German solider uniforms in 1939.
It really shows how the war evolved and how the Germans began to really get it right, right at the end of WW1.
I feel like it also shows Hitler’s nostalgia for WW1, with how he had the army keep essentially the exact same uniform going into the next war.

Especially the helmet change to the steel helmet. My favorite helmet style by the way.
I think most western armies have based their current helmets on the German Stahlhelm as the shape offers the best protection.

Als Ergänzung habe ich etwas zum gezeigten Karabiner 98 beizutragen: Es handelt sich um einen Karabiner Kar. 98a (das erste Gewehr, welches speziell für das 7,92x57 sS-Geschoss entwickelt wurde (später, bis heute 8x57 IS : „Infanterie-Spitzgeschoss“) wobei dies nix mit der“SS“ zu tun hat - die waren zwar anfänglich sehr oft noch mit Gewehr 98, sowie mit Kar.98a ausgerüstet, als die Wehrmacht bereits den legendären 98k hatte. Die sS-Bezeichnung steht aber für „schweres Spitzgeschoss“ - also die Geschossform, welche -bis heute- noch aktuell ist)!
Der Karabiner 98 wurde nicht für die "Patrone sS" entwickelt, er verschoss die "Patrone S" wie das Gewehr 98. Einführung des Karabiners war 1908, die "Patrone sS" wurde hingegen erst 1914 eingeführt. Zur Zeit des 1.WK wurde diese Munitionsart nur an Flieger und erst ab 1918 auch an MG-Einheiten ausgegeben; ein Verschießen dieser Patrone aus Gewehren war streng untersagt. Zur Standard-Gewehrpatrone wurde die "Patrone sS" erst ab 1933. Die Bezeichnung "8x57 I" oder "8x57 IS" ist eine zivile, im militärischen Sprachgebrauch waren das die "Patrone 88" oder "Patrone S".

Thank you for this video, I'm French and I know how much of a tragedy the 1st WW was, at every level. What I can say today is that I'm proud that some of my best friends are German and that France and Germany are trying to build a better future together. I can't wait for a true European army though, that would be the best revenge ever of our two peoples over that tragic history.
Yeah a think the Europeans should work together more to make a proper running army becaus of what is currently happening Germany allready spends a lot but seems to waste a lot and be very bureaucratic and slow.
