You add one note so instead of playing e-14--12 b-14--12 You play e-14-13-12 b-14----12 I like to think that it’s like playing the blue note on a pentatonic blues scale. It spices things up
To the Minor Pentatonic scale (1-b3-4-5-b7), add these notes: 1) the 2/9 , as he just did. 2) the 6/13. 3) the b5, from the Blues Scale. 4) the 3, for use over a Dominant 7th (1-3-5-b7), and ALWAYS resolve that upwards from b3 to 3. (Not used over Minor.) 5) Now the remaining “outside” notes can be used as PASSING NOTES, b2/b6/7. - Now you can use EVERY SINGLE NOTE over a Dominant 7th chord. - “It’s all chromatic.”
That is actually exactly what joe bonamassa does. Eric johnson plays 5's and even 3's. On the 5th he sweeps one note down to stay in the correct picking pattern. Cool Video man!
Troy Grady has a really good explanation of why this works. It has to do with downward pick slanting and how the Eric Johnson style of picking/playing optimizes switching between strings. I noticed I did the same thing with the 9/maj7 in pentatonic phrases as well without even thinking about it. There's so many hidden mechanics behind picking technique that even the best players don't know they're doing until you watch back footage in slow motion.
Alright everyone guitar instructor of 7 years here. Basically take your E minor pentatonic scale and add in an F# note wherever possible. Gives a more Dorian/Lydian feel to whatever you’re playing. Hate that this guy didn’t explain anything AT ALL. You’re welcome to all who see this lol.
He didn't explain it but you did worse with your "explanation" 😂 F# doesn't make it sound Dorian (that would be C#) and surely not Lydian either which is a major scale. It's just the 2nd of the minor scale.
@@jackmaple6679 he’s saying all you have to do is borrow a note from the major scale to the pentatonic, more or less a blue note. In the video he’s using the Em scale and the note he’s adding is a C#
@@pamanes7 The tab? He plays the part. You could just slow the video, and write it out yourself in about 15 minutes tops. It’s a very easy lick. If you can’t mimic what he’s doing, you aren’t ready to be playing this fast, and trying to incorporate it to your leads.
I use that extra note alot,it sounds really good ,these younger guitar players/teachers seem to be all about speed, no one that doesn't know that move will get what he is saying, when youre teaching slow it down and put it in context with a backing track.people dont learn things at high speed.show off when youre on stage .
Don't over think this, the extra note simply allows the pick strokes to stay consistently down-up instead of changing to up-down after the high E string,a pull off on the high E works also,Ben Eller and Troy Grady for more of this idea
Great content 🤘🤘✌️🖖 by the way you must know all of your pentatonic shapes to grasp the add one note concept and be able to throw in the ninth where appropriate 🤘🤘✌️🖖
that degree called major second (super tonic) and without the sixth degree it really doesn't take the personality of the pentatonic scale , it is a very good hint I myself was always in wonder how Eric Johnson doing such a smooth runs and I invent lots of sweep style implementation of the pentatonic scale your note was really helpful
Yeah right I'll get right on that. Dosent seem to matter how much I work on this I can't get close to that speed. Would b nice to learn how to achieve this speed.
I'm sorry to say this but legit it's just practice the same lick or position over and over and over and over and over again. and then do it again and do it again literally every day until you just wake up and realize you can play it faster and cleaner than you could before. just busy yourself in self improvement with guitar, it's not glamorous but you gotta embrace the suck here
in addition to 2nd degree you can use 5b as passing note between 5thp and perfect 4th but Eric never uses these degree as a scale degree ( like in blues scale) just as passing note either when you move up from 4 to 5 (4#) or when descend from 4th to 5 specially if the rhythm needs you to add one more note to land on or off the certain beat
Check out Troy Grady’s Cracking the Code to go more in depth about what this guy is talking about. If you’re a downward pickslanter, this just allows you to change strings on an upstroke so you don’t get stuck in between strings. You can build up CRAZY speed just off of understanding this.
I think we need a tutorial for this tutorial
You add one note so instead of playing
e-14--12
b-14--12
You play
e-14-13-12
b-14----12

😂
Add modal tonal centers by flavoring your ascending and descending directional changes with the tonal centers for the desired modal flavors
"Try that out" ok Rick Beato 😅
Ya right
Like that....
New gen from the Yngwie School Of Shred lol
I was going to say that 😂😂
Just glad he doesn’t play some shitty synth minor chord in the background
Fiancée?? My guy, I thought you were 14 or 15 😂🤦🏽♂️🤯
hell no
I didnt think it was legal for children to have Fiancees...
I thought he was gay lol
Dude who you teaching this too? Cmon . Even to great players your teaching abilities suck
😂😂
Good tip. Love when people explain it simple and neat.
😂

Any note "works" as long as you play it fast enough.
"It's all chromatic?"
"Always has been.."
Thanks man, great comment
Nice
Could someone please explain what the “b” means
Shit man that shred is insane
Sounding great! Good call, there's a lot to that principal.
Principle/principal… heterographs.
He is basically asking you to learn minor/major scale.
When you add that note its not pentatonic anymore.
Do you lose points if it’s more than 5 notes..??🤣🤣🤣
@@joeurbanowski321 HARD YES. Haha
Even pentatonic has major and minor technically

How fast is this on metronome? at what bpm are these joe bonamassa style licks played

Yes without this extra note you will flip the direction when you switch strings.
Always a great tone, teaching, and clarity. Appreciate what you do brother.!

Thanks for the tips and tutorial bro☝️👍🙏
That is a great idea. I never thought of it that way and have been playing for years
Great tip 🎉🎉🎉
Insane how simple you make it look
What this does is basically ensure that string switches happen on the downstroke essentially, allowing you to maybe make use of downward pickslanting.
Maaan, UR fckin awesome! 🔥🤩🤘
bro can we have tutorial for this, your awesome...
No the one thing it comes down to is practice. Practice, practice, practice as one of my favorite band directors told me.
Wow that a neat trick💜
