If anyone in the Utah area want to learn more. I have open shop nights at the high school I teach at. Come, learn and drive. Our shop students have 7 done and are building two more this year. We also have set land speed records during world of speed too. A great shop project for both kids and adults.
If anyone is interested and would like to see how to build their own true Cyclekart, go watch Steve Vinson’s Videos . ruclips.net/channel/UC_7aTYnh7gJXhoE36tyJP-g
I absolutely love this type of grass roots racing, almost like recreating the feeling of the original old school racers that started all, I have to do this some day soon!
Check out the gambler500. If you like grassroots stuff youd get a kick out of the gambler 500. I think theres another one called hoopti ex but dont quote me on the hoopty one
I saw one at the High Desert Swap Meet this summer, that my dad’s friend decided to build one during the pandemic. They look like they would be a blast to build and drive.
What a fantastic class of racing, watched this with my 15 year old son and by the time you read this plans will be well underway to build ours, we may even have to start our own club here in Far North Queensland, Australia, where there are no racing circuits, but heaps of farm bikes and big open spaces. What sounds better than ripping around in a pre war racecar in tropical paradise, doing it for a fraction of the cost, whilst building relationships along the way. Thanks for some inspiration on what to do this Christmas holidays. Hope all is going well in Dubai and that you are driving the Lykan and it's little brother like you stole them mate. Cheers
I get to build these with my high school auto students, it has been a great learning project for them. We where able to set a land speed record on the Utah Salt Flats.
Thanks for the fantastic video Casey. And thanks so much for hooking us up with guys at Velocity International, we had an absolute blast at the event. I'm told that we did the First and so far ONLY Le Mans style start in the history of Laguna Seca. The Corkscrew in a CycleKart was a wild ride! These crazy little karts are a joy to build and share with others.
Ok, I had to laugh. Here everyone expects a Lykan/Fenyr/Dubai video and you hit'em with the Cyclekart vid. I know it'll be good because I was there, but still- the chuckle was real. 😎
Many channels out there about the build. It is very exciting to build and drive. There are some cool events set for 2022. Cyclekarts are have been invited to world of speed out on the Salt Flats of Utah.
I have been imagining building a mini prewar racer for a while. I was running into a lot of dead ends on how to go about doing it and components to use. I just could not believe no one had the same idea. Then I found this video. While I was wanting to do something with a tiny high reving engine and a transaxle, this is a HUGE boost in info that I am not alone in my quest. Thanks Casey! Seriously and sarcastically. You just cost me thousands of dollars!
I'm from Australia too & stumbled upon this it looks like fun doesn't it would be great if cycle carts started here but the police here are narcs remember monkey bikes or electric MTB ill keep my eyes open !!
I would love to see Casey build one of these Cyclekarts, but with styled after the "1954 Firebird" GM Prototype, or possibly building it like Louis Meyer's "1928 Indy 500 winning Miller" that Casey got to sit in for the Photoshoot at the Indianapolis Speedway while driving in the Indy Pro 2000!
Wanted to build one of these years ago, but didn't have the means. This summer I ended up building a front-engined gokart that looks like a T-bucket using an old wheelbarrow as a body, a Harbor Freight 212 Predator engine, golf kart tires in back and small wheelbarrow tires in front. Maybe I can build one of these next.
@@bryancohn9406 good to know. I'm use to have roll bar in my toys I do 'stupid' stuff like my Jeep Wrangler for off-road play and BMW Z3 M roadster for destroying speed limits in turns.
I looked at building a cycle kart but I already have an Austin 7 and didn't want a bigger car! It's nice seeing these take their inspiration from so many real pre-war cars.
Maybe that's a way to start a new racing series? Smaller cars, few rules, smaller engines, keep the costs down. Have a max track width, max wheel base, max overall length and width, minimum weight, maximum engine size (limited by total cu in volume?), don't allow turbos or supercharging and NOS, maybe a rule such as the solid rear axle and limited to rear wheel drive... Otherwise, go for it. Keep the rules as minimal as possible and allow innovation and keep it accessible. Maybe a few more regarding helmets and other basic safety things. But imagine including pit stops into a series like this too, perhaps? Without restricting fuel carrying, you might opt to skip pitstops to save time, but then you might be running more worn tires, tradeoffs, I don't know? But by keeping the vehicle and engine size small like these cyclekarts, the engines remain affordable and accessible, and by limiting total internal engine volume, it becomes an efficiency game regarding HP. More people could enjoy and participate in such a racing series across the nation, without needing deep pockets and lots of space or specialty tools.
There already are rules that govern a lot of it (look up Stevenson cycle kart rules), I think there's a general disdain for organizing bodies and the cheating that comes with sanctioned racing in the ck community, so they are looser and not at all tolerant of the type a win at all cost mentality. Basically, use a 6.5hp motor and keep the look right and you'll be good, the rest is up to you, but they award more based on spirit and looking the part than any type of speed or race winning.
@@bobzdar Yes, I get the concern over sanctioning bodies. Eventually when a good thing becomes successful enough, money and corruption takes over and the sport is then ruined. This happens to good businesses that go bad too.
I would love to see a 2seater class as they were originally available in both 1and 2seaters (of course the 2seaters would need to be given a wider track width but keep the other dimensions
@@dodgeme1986truck when did cyclekarts ever drive on teh road as 2-seaters? Literally NO point in requiring a 2-seater other than driving up cost (more material, need a larger trailer, etc.) for no reason.

Cyclekarts are great and I want to build one and I was going to... but ended up making a half scale lotus 7 instead with a full locost chassis but in half scale material and it is powered by a 125cc 3 speed engine and gokart tires because they fit the scale that I was working to. one day I'll get back to the original plan to build a cycle kart.
Casey, I saw a few karts belonging to Dennis Thomas. Were you able to meet him? He has many videos going over the steps of his various builds. very great craftsman!
Those things are sooo cool!! I know how you feel about instigating something like this. I started putting together the route and plans for the Hunstanton, UK soap box racing. It a lot of fun. I have used this as part of my lesson when teach high school auto shop classes. If ever in the Utah area, swing by my students will gladly let you drive one of their cars and tell you about their hard work.
Where do you get the rims and tires and at what cost? I wanted robust high profile yet narrow tires for my front but the price per was nearly the same as the 16hp engine i bought. I had to settle for 18.5 x 6.5 tires (the right height but the width makes it so i must redesign the front end so everything is as robust as the tires and rims. My kart has 5/8" spindles, nuteral caster and camber and i have to change all of that. Including the tubing used in the knuckle and supports -- what a mess.
Love the looks of these. No idea where I could possibly have fun with one though. Making a pedal assisted one up to 25kmh would be road legal though...
Man, if I wasn't so damned old and crippled up, I'd build one of these in a minute! I'd do mine with one of those small Chinese diesels, a manual gearbox, and chain drive, and maybe style it after the Fiat S76 'Beast of Turin'🤣
It is crazy fun. Most are one wheel key/drive and one wheel brake. Still leave a great smile on your face after driving. Join us at next event and I will let you drive any of our shop cyclekarts (built as a high school auto shop project)
