The mystery of the compass explained for the Royal Yachting Association Day Skipper student, part of the City Sailing Day Skipper Tutorial Course.
We explain the compass and how to convert from Compass to True using variation and deviation.
Also, we explain the deviation card, how to set a compass course and plot a compass course to true on your chart.

Hi Brent, you did a simple examples. Great. But what if we have compass that gives us deviation W (e.g. 270). Is math applied? In such case we have 270+4. Right?
You use the same formular with TVMDC, pop in your True, apply the variation from your compass rose, apply the deviation from the deviation table and you have your compass course, check out the video to see if you add or subtract in the formular.
So when navigating do you use the chart and use True or the compass and use magnetic? Or both.
You use compass to steer by but all workings on your chart are converted and are in True.
at 18.15 seconds the slide shows a title of True to Compass but is it not supposed to be Compass to True? i think...
Dear Brent
You are right the title does say True to Compass but we do work our Compass to True in the worked example. Thanks for watching and picking this up.
Cheers
Paul
