They didn't have any real choice back in 2011 when the Syrian Arab Aram (SAA) split in two causing armed Syrians against the Baathist Assad goverment. As those SAA were ordered to be shot if they refused to shoot unarmed civilian protestors. It was a kill or be killed reality.
