Easily the best 2021 game I've played yet.
I have to admit I am surprised that you did not love this game. I have always considered these two games to be amazing war games hidden in a solid theme. Review was as always very good.
For the original Dominant Species, anytime I'm playing it I arrange for my friends to have the whole day free. When people know to expect a very long game, it's fine.
The original is one of the meanest war gamws ever made.
This is also a war game. The theme is a bait and switch. You'll soon realize that you're deploying troops, assaulting other units, and taking over lands and setting up bases and economic stations
I've heard that analogy a lot, but I would have preferred a more explicit wargame.
Nice review. Honest and you've not been sucked into the hype which is something I can't often say about reviewers who get free copies. The original DS was the first 'proper' boardgame I played and we still love and play it 10 years later. I soon found my main boardgame interests lay in historical wargaming and natural history and my venn diagram probably formed with us playing the original DS. Having heard what you've said I think I'll pass on this one. It looks pretty identical in terms of design with a few tweaks and I like having my DS arachnid-bird vs reptile-insect alliances late game - it fuels the theatre of the mind!
The original DS is a long game too and I always recommend wiping the cards at the end of every turn, it means the tilemap footprint is smaller, resources tighter and it plays in less than 90 minutes. Judging by the similar looking/sounding design, I'd recommend that alternative play if you found it too long but wanted to try it again.
Thanks for your comments
Some of the comments made me think you absolutely ripped into it but, after having watched the review, the points were fair and you also praised it in places.
Thanks. I try to be fair.
Always appreciate your reviews. I don't suppose you'd consider lowering the gain on the intro and outro? Listening to your review on headphones, the music is literally painfully loud.
Sorry about that. Always experimenting with levels.
Was the awful evolution game a Bios game from Phil Eklund?
That wasn't the game I was referring to, but I have played that one and was not overly impressed.
My only complain with the game is the luck factor compared to the original. I love the first one. But here the cards and the turn structure adds more random elements. And maybe it's fits to the theme, for me it hurts the game. Don't get me wrong I think this is a very good game. But the original still better.
Imho this one a much better 2 player game. Actually a good 2 player game.
Perhaps I should try it again with two players at some point. Thanks.
Discriminating species…. Pass.
To each their own.
