    I think this is the most wholesome thing I've ever seen. I've never enjoyed learning something quite so much, the toy re-enactment was a delight. I'm pretty sure it added a few months to my life expectancy.

    My mum always put a straw goat under the christmas tree. I knew it was a scandinavian christmas tradition, but no more than that. After seeing this I think I will revive that tradition.

    Aloha from Hawai'i Arith, if you don't mind me calling you by your first name. I always enjoy your videos as they are very educational, fun, caring, and full of aloha. We here in Hawai'i have many God's too and many are family aumakua god's: in the forms of sharks, owls, etc... but none the less it is a wonderful happy event when you give a presentation. Mahalo nui loa (Thank/Respect to you very much.

      Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm happy to know that in Hawai you still preserve the old traditions; that is very good to keep them because you are honering your ancestors and showing them that you haven't forgotten their ways. I'm really happy about that. Thank you for your feedback and support and I don't mind at all you calling me by my first name ^^ Best wishes to you. Farewell :D

    Another year and a review of this video. Tomorrow I am cooking a chicken so after I have eaten it I will put all the bones together and take my hammer out from my tool box and wave it over the bones. If the chicken does not ressurect then I will make a small fire and burn the bones in the garden.
    As always Arith, I wish you and all your viewers the very best for the season and a better year next year.

    A Swedish friend of mine goes to Burning Man each year and part of it is that people write notes and leave them on the man to be burned. Hearing the part about notes on the Yule Goat before burning, puts her visits to Burning Man in some more context. Thank you.

    As Pagan as I am, I don't want to hurt any animal for any spiritual/religious cause. One time I was actually forced to read Leviticus in the old testament aloud and it was so nauseating at how people would sacrifice an animal that had nothing wrong with it to some Vengeful Bully of a god. Totally ok with straw animals. Also, there are other offerings to the Gods that I am totally ok with i.e. spices, herbs, incense, etc. Loved the video. Merry Yule and Blessed Be.

      Animal sacrifice and eating the meat of the sacrificed animal is sacred in Norse heathenry.
      Sacred traditions are always more important than our own preferences.
      Paganism is not the escape place of other religions, where you can do or not do what you want.

    I think there's another symbolic side to this tradition.
    Jól would be celebrated just after the rut, and the slaughter of the buck (with his kids forming in the womb of the doe) could represent the death of the old and the birth of the new.

    2017 has been a terrible year for me so I am hoping for 2018 to be the turning point. If anyone out there has it in their heart please ask your god/s to favour me as my gods have gone deaf to me or maybe it's just a bad season for me.

    all childhood my Mother placed a birch log with candles and fresh pine with 2 straw goats on kitchen table. these weren't burnt however. she is long gone and no one can explain this to me. is birch important? I plan on recreating this as I recall it for my late years. Takke

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  7 лет назад

      Yes my friend, birch is one of the most important trees to the pagan european religions. It goes back even before the Celts. In a comment I can't tell you the meaning of the Birch tree because it would be too long. But Birch, Yew and Oak are the most important trees. Birch is associated with rebirth, purification and protection. But in Norse Mythology the Ash, Oak and Yew are the three types of trees people usually honor. Birch is much more important in a Celtic spiritual background. I hope you have a wonderful season friend and good luck in recreating that family tradition. It's what keeps us close to our ancestors.

    It would be so nice if there was no more violence to be had. For some reason, maybe its just a wired feeling from something I ate, but I cant shake the feeling that as sure as 1 + 1 = 2, the future will bring more,and it will be our collective choices that decides who the victims are.
