    while I don't doubt that a connection with fertility may exist, the practical use for cats is that they would keep the population of mice down, and this is a service they also rendered in Egypt where they were adored and linked to their Goddess of Love Bast. If there are no mice, then the wheat, barley and other grains can sustain a community through the winter, so cats were a matter of life and death which is why (as you say) they were not sacrificed and were linked to earthly bounty. This also sheds light on how they were important to FREYA, and therefore in the Vanir cult, which was agricultural--rather than the Aesir.

    lost my cat of 14 years a couple of months ago. pets break your furniture and then your heart. sorry for your loss.
    Cats (and hares) have a nocturnal side. At a time of paganism and sun worship they were considered a portal to the soul. people thought in the sun's absence they could get up to divilment. whose eyes reflect the moon which reflects the all seeing sun? 🇮🇪🐍🦌🎶

    I had noticed that Freyja's cats were not named. I think also that account of the Volva's elaborate dress mentioned several animal skins, all of which may have been symbols of her helping spirits. This is a very interesting video, thank you Arith

    my best friend is a cat. tim. i can appreciate how u feel. arith i have lived in a bay, in a town of 200. only accesable by boat. a fishing village in newfoundland. a life style that couldn't be more northman. i'd say if the viking town had 2 cats it would soon have 8. people actually took litters, put them in a bag with a rock and threw them off the warf. cats were very valuable to northmen but a shortage i don't see. i'm really enjoying your in depth teachings. thank yew gare

      Sounds like a cool place where you live. I live in a place where elders did the same to little cats; on a bag with water and drown them. Children like myself grew up surrounded by cruelty and we became cruel ourselves towards others. By things change when we give way to compassion. Thx friend 🙂

    As an amateur archeologist I helped excavating a first and second century site in the terp mound of Techum, near Leeuwarden, Friesland (in The Netherlands) in 2016. After finding at least eight pits filled with animal parts (predominantly fish, cattle bones, carved wood and even a carved 'staff'.) I found a sole female skull of a young female in her twenties. It was pkaced on a modest 'floor' of pottery and accompsnied by a cat's metatarsus. She was dubbed 'the witch of Techum', but after finding a male skull (with knife marks, as if defleshed) and posdible dog bones, the site felt different to me. The pits and skull burials near the pits would have been on the shoreline of and ancient see arm, called the Bordine (from Pgmc. 'bordunga', 'border-water', frontier). That could make it a liminal space in the late Frisian Iron Age. The Idea of using sacrificial animals to make contact with land spirits, ancestors or other 'other than human entities, is enticing. Thank you!

    Thank you Arith for a well researched and beautiful video. It seems strange in this day and age to hear that cats were rare in the North of Europe when you see how numerous they are now.
    The farmers had a practical reason to keep cats near to the farm - to hunt and kill the rodents that can damage crops and stored grain.

    Greetings from Pennsylvania, USA. Great video. My beloved cat Snowy (RIP🧡) passed away January 2020. He was 22 years old. He was originally a barn cat when I adopted him and made him a house cat. I think he would rather have been outside but I didn't want him to get hurt. But I adopted him with his sister and then added 3 other cats and 8 dogs over the years, so he was never lonely. I hope he has joined your cat and Freyja. 🙂

    I really enjoyed this video but why not mention the unique Norwegian forest cat? Much love and attention and reverence must have gone to breeding such cats! Thank you for your kind words and feedback once again ^^ Oh yeah Norwegian cats can be of great value for info such as this, but I haven't researched about them. I thought of them, actually, but to make a single video I research so much sources that I end up having to cut a lot of information or my videos would be Documentaries :p actually, there's a video of mine coming next month which has 40min, which isn't good for youtube since people are very impatient nowadays and prefer to watch short clips ;p but that's actually a very useful information from your part, cat genes to prove vikings came to America much earlier than originally thought. I might research about it as well. Thank you!

    Not only Christianity, Abrahamic Religions in general, especially Jewish Religion, is the main Culprit, not anything Je-SUS said and did, we must remember, that Biblical Jesus never existed, neither did Judaism, since there is no Archaeological evidence for their Existence or for any such "Ancient Israel" it just never existed, so Judaism and Christianity seem to have arisen at the same time, about 200 to 400 AD, and not before it.
    But yes, once established, the whole Native And true Religion of the Levantine people, of PALESTINE aka PHOENICIA, the Religion of the Gods where ANAT and ISHTAR and ASHERA were Parallels to FREYA, APHRODITE-VENUS, were also worshiped, the Abrahamic plague destroyed even their own Worship of the Goddesses, the same with ISIS and BAST in Egypt, where the Cat was also a Sacred Animal.... It is time to awaken our Worship of the Goodnesses and Gods... Hail the DEITIES!!!...

    This was very interesting. It makes sense to me that cats would be associated totemically with Freyja and with women's magic. Out of curiosity (because I have not been able to find anything), is there any information on the role of dogs in Norse life?

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  6 лет назад +3

      hehe you are not the first to ask that, yes there is information concerning dogs in norse societies, at least archaeological ones. I've spoken a bit about dogs in the Cult of Odin video, but only a little. I may create a video about that subjects because dogs and horses were the most sacrificed animals in northern Europe. The dog is often connected to Odin and to nobility and to warriors of great renown whose objective in burial context is to send them to Valhalla.

    That was very well done and incredibly interesting, though I must say animal sacrifice is quite a vile thought for me and I have to try and view it from the spiritual aspect of the ancestors only. Is there nothing related to dogs in the same way? Thank you friend.

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  6 лет назад +3

      Thank you ^^ ... yeah our ancestors were too hardcore, too cruel; animals and people, no distinction, no remorse, no mercy, no pity... glad those days are over. Makes no sense nowadays and we can do sacrifices still in a different way but without harming anyone or anything. Yeah about dogs there are references, dogs and horses were the most common to be sacrificed. I've talked a bit about dogs in the case of Odin on the video about his cult, but maybe I shall have to delve much more on that, on some other video ;p

      I think the view of mortality was a lot different. Death was something that people had to face much more closely. They were more comfortable with death and saw it as a transferral of worlds. But yes I agree, the idea of killing little puppies and kitties is abhorrent to me.

    Freya is a fertility goddess and cats procreate very VERY efficiently. Unfortunately in the United States alone we euthanize millions of cats a year because irresponsible pet owners do not spay their cats and they have litter after litter of kittens that can find no homes, and of course when the kittens grow up and are no longer "cute" the owner loses interest and the poor cat ends up in a kill shelter. Their astonishing fertility compared to other beings, and Freya being a fertility goddess is no coincidence as far as I am concerned. ❤🐈🐱🐯🐅🐆❤

      Where exactly did you find that? Because such names don't appear in any sources, not even the oldest. No names are given to Freyja's cats. Please, if you found in historical sources other than the Fan Art fantasy ones, share with us, because that may help a lot.

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  6 лет назад +5

      I quote what you sent me "(...)Old Norse literature never recorded the names of the goddess's cats. One author, Diana Paxson in her novel Brisingamen assigned the poetic names Tregul ("tree-gold", or amber) and Bygul ("bee-gold", or honey) to Freyja's cats where they appeared in her story. There is no evidence at all in Norse literature for these names, of course (...). I read Diana Paxson "Brisingamen" and it's a novela, it's fantasy. And the very person of that website affirms what I've said - there are no names for Freyja's cats, unfortunately. However, that doesn't mean they had no names, they probably had, but as I've said in this video (and will reinforce on the next one), the names for Freyja's cats, if there were any, were wiped out from the sources.

    • @theFameWolf
      @theFameWolf 6 лет назад

      Interesting. Paxon is the leader of the Troth.
      We call that UPG, unverifiable personal gnosis, on the religious side.
      I stand corrected.

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  6 лет назад +2

      I know who she is. By the end of this month I will even speak about one of her books. There is a big difference between her religious books supported by the sources and academic works, and her fantasy novelas. She made that clear. The book you are quoting is fantasy and she didn't created it to be a source of knowledge about Norse culture. She created that one, and others, to be a fantasy novela completely apart from academic works.

    I have a simple theory.
    If cats were the friend of women in the home, protecting them from vermin then I'd imagine women wouldn't allow men to harm them, not just for practical reasons, but for their maternal instinct of protecting anything with big cute eyes. If men sacrificed cats, their home life would be miserable. Some things never change.
    Also... you ever tried to catch and pick up an angry cat? You can muzzle a wolf easier than hold a cats claws. Screw getting a wound infection in those times. Lol

    It's interesting that a cat is said to have nine lives. Do you have any information on this belief?

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  6 лет назад +5

      You know, all my life I've heard that and I've never researched about it. Amazing, sometimes I feel like I'm sleeping. I'm glad you said that actually, thx for reminding me. In southern Europe the cat has 7 lives but in other parts of the world it's 9. 7 lives I think it was a Muslim belief which was passed down to southern European countries when the Muslims invaded Europe, because in the Kabbalah 7 is the most powerful number, highly magical, and I think (not sure) that even Muhammad had a connection with cats and in the proverbs associated to him and cats it was said that cats had 7 lives. Now, 9 lives, I do believe it was a myth created during medieval times because it was said witches who had a cat, could possess the cat 9 times, enter its body 9 times. There used to be a proverb in the XVI century that Women as well as cats had 9 lives.

      Ratatoskr I most cat customs have their source in Egypt. Egyptians speak of 9 subtle energies.
      It could be that cats were so sacred(in touch with spirit/energies) they could have been come to believe the cat has a full soul or spirits worth of each energy?
      This is just my conclusion and it might change; but I've always wondered about cats nine lives, too, so I thought I'd share my latest theory

      I like your theory and so far makes a lot of sense.

      Arith Härger thanks to you + Miles for your insights. I think it is fascinating how ancient esoteric knowledge is hidden in plain sight in little anecdotes and proverbs.

      Could 9 lives have something to do with the 9 relms? A cats magical ability to shift between them but must sacrafice a life(energy), this is pure speculation however.

      No, those names come from a fiction novel by Diana Paxson. I believe it's called Brisingamen

    I wonder how much of it also has to do with the fact that cats are induced ovulators. Meaning the act of sex is enough for the body to start ovulation. Cats can also become pregnant even if they are already pregnant (it has to happen with in a certain time window). Typically kitten season is in the spring but where i am (California) you see it at all times of year. Just curious about any kind of connection, if there is one.

    • @TeamJella
      @TeamJella 2 года назад

      No, cow milk isn't good for most cats due to them being lactose intolerant. All cats naturally drink their mother's milk at birth, and this is their best option for food at such a young age.
