- The Huaisheng Mosque, also known as the Lighthouse Mosque, was built in honor of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which is reflected in its name. ‘Huaisheng’ translates to “remembering the saint” in Chinese. Ancient Chinese Muslim documents suggest that Huaisheng Mosque was first built over 1,300 years ago in 672 by Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas, a companion of the Prophet who is believed to have traveled to China during the rule of Emperor Gaozong (649-683), the emperor of the Tang Dynasty at that time. The Huaisheng Mosque is considered to be the most ancient mosque in China and one of the oldest in the world.
