Hey Matt, good video. I was expecting to hear you comments on the feel of the bag while playing. Tonal quality...etc. I have a lee and sons tied in bag. when I play my black wood chanter with it it rings!!...I feel it in my shoulder where the bass drone sits. I feel it in my chest, and arm and most of all in my fingers!!...I never got that with a grommet bag. Wonder if you and others feel the same. Cheers
I didn’t bring up sound/tone for a few reasons. The biggest, they were two different brands of bagpipes. I couldn’t control for that many factors! One was a set of Naills, and the other I said Hendersons. Both brilliant instruments, but they sound quite different from one another in any bag. That said, I didn’t feel the grommets either subtracted or added to the vibration/resonance of the bag. I thought it might, and probably should’ve said as much in the video… I just wanted to speak about the things I could clearly show and observe. I do feel hide bags have that ringing feeling in a way synthetic bags lack, but I’m not convinced the grommets really matter, more the material of the bag. Hard to do real science on the topic.
I heard various claims about sound quality as a function of grommets or traditionally tied-in stocks, and you didn't touch on that at all in this video. I realize that's just about impossible to discuss in any sort of objective fashion, but do you have thoughts on that matter as well? Perhaps in a follow-on video??
I just had my old pipes refurbished.. I’ve played a Ross or Bannatyne hybrids with grommets so long I forgot how tie ins felt.. I was in need of a new bag anyhow and saw a used L&M elk hide on the pipe shop owner’s workshop.. I payed him very little for it as it was taken off a set for a swap… to a hybrid… I’m absolutely sad I ever switched to a grommeted bag at all.. that bent shape is the very thing I’ve been missing comfort wise…(I also went from a medium to a small) so🤷🏻♂️ but I’m never buy a grommeted bag ever again..
Great video, Matt. I’m looking for L&S cowhide pipe bag with grommets and I just have a question for you( I hope you can help me: in your experience, how often do you need to seasoning a cowhide pipe bag like this? It depends of the weather? It depends on how many hours do you play? Thanks in advance and thanks for sharing your experience. It’s very helpful.
I have not owned a L&S cowhide bag, but I only have to season my goatskin every 6 months or so. I'd think the cowhide would take less seasoning than the goatskin. I recommend seasoning a bag every six months in any case (as it helps kill the microbes inside).

I’m just discovering your great videos, Matt. These are a real gift! Thanks so much for all that you do for us. God bless you!
Glad you found the channel!
That's really cool how with a moose valve you can pull your blowpipe out, tied in bags can feel more natural than grommeted.
As usual a great Video
and excellent information.
Very Good content!! You really help us all!!!
Happy to help!

I didn’t notice any tonal differences grommets or no… I had meant to include that in the video.

I also have no plans to return to a grommeted bag.
