Dhayah Fort, a castle-like structure, is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List and stands proud amidst the arid mountains and fertile date wadis of northern Emirate Ras Al Khaimah. The fort forms the centre of this lush oasis and boasts spectacular views from the mountains across palm trees and verdant lands to neighbouring Oman and down to the sea.
The current mud-brick structure of Dhayah Fort Ras Al Khaimah was built in the 19th century. The fort is situated on the top of a hill with zigzag staircase of more than 230 steps. Though the way up is a bit of a challenge, the breathtaking views of the surrounding scenery and local farms more than make up for it. It is the highest hilltop fort in the UAE and was the site of a battle during the Persian Gulf campaign of 1819. Dhayah Fort played a major role as the last point of resistance during the British attacks in 1819 against the tribes of Ras Al Khaimah. Although the British troops were able to surround the hill, they could not reach the fort itself because of the steep flanks, which made it difficult to climb. A few years later, the present fort was built from stone, mud brick and mortar on the remains of the old fort. It was carefully restored in the 1990's and can be easily visited today via a stairway. On the limited space available there are two towers facing one another across a small courtyard, surrounded by a wall. Dhayah Fort served as a short term defense structure during attacks on the oasis.
