hey! fyi, if you dont know yet, your translation of this song is already inputted into the song! pinocchiop also credited you on the intro! thank you for your hard work
It kind of bothered me that no one interpreted this cause I find this song awesome and very interesting. So I just did it myself. In the first paragraph of CatgirlMe's translation, you can see how Miku keeps talking to the core, her heart, asking it to recall the happy and loving memories (nostalgic landscape/multicoloured love). She wants the "sickly spirits" to disappear and, I assume, be able to lead a happy life. Her repetetive useage of the word "core" throughout the entire song also emphasizes her pleading towards her own heart and makes it sound like she's constantly talking to her heart. For the 2nd paragraph the translation of "An American Otaku" made a little more sense to me, which is: "Those days are continuing onwards There's no charm in them and no magic either Even so, I'm still here." Miku's basically saying that every day is the same but she's still alive regardless. She doesn't make any experiences she'd consider "magical" or even "charming". It becomes quite clear that she seems to suffer from depression but you can see that she wishes for her depression to disappear, as she pleads with herself to remember the happy aspects of life. Now one might wonder what caused her depression. It could have been caused by a broken heart, as you see a broken heart flying around at 1:30. Right after that, you can see a heart again and it has different colours and to me this makes it look like it has been patched together, which implies it has been broken several times already. But I have no idea what a real human heart looks like so I could very well be wrong here. Besides the broken heart, you can also see a broken horse (2:23), which is later then, like the heart, fixed in an unnatural looking way at 04:03. Soon after, the pig that's broken at 4:31 is fixed in the same manner. Then, at 5:43, these 3 broken beings circle the heart, while the image becomes distorted. To me it stands out that the 2 animals, the pig and horse, both are livestock. It could've been a pet such as a cat/dog instead, for example. But instead, the human being is displayed as being on the same level as livestock. Being livestock means that you do not have any freedom of doing what you want to do, you cannot live an independent life and, in my opinion, cannot lead a life worth living. So if this is how Miku feels, it would explain why she suffers from that depression. It is also worth mentioning that basically everything shown in this video seems to be broken. There are bones etc. flying around but nothing seems to be in one piece. One could think that the singer sees the whole world as broken. As the three are circling the heart (5:43), Miku repeats her 3rd paragraph not only one but two times. Core, overflowing with dazzling light Core, the colours are multiplying around the sadness Core, while the sound of clockwork drowns out everything Core, just for now let’s forget about the end. In the first 2 lines she implies that her heart does contain lights, which is something positive by default, and sometimes it even overflows. However, by saying that the light overflows, it is also implied that her heart simply is unable to contain any light, or only small amounts of light, which is a metaphor for positive feelings/memories. The colours, on the other hand, are "multiplying around the sadness". I think it's important to note there's a difference between "light" and "colour". Light, for instance, is only temporary, meaning that if you switch it off, it is gone without leaving a trace. Colour, however, usually leaves stains and doesn't disappear very easily. This is why I assume that Miku is trying to say that positive experiences (light) leave her heart rather quickly and are hardly noticed while negative experiences (colour) do leave stains on her heart and are difficult for her to deal with. One aspect that proves that negative experiences make a bigger impact on her than positive ones is that she states that these experiences don't only "add up" but "multiply", hinting at a very rapid growth, and they only do multiply "around the sadness", not around happiness. Following that, in the 3rd line Miku says that "sound of clockwork drowns out everything". The clockwork could, once again, stand for the heart. A clockwork is basically the heart/core of a machine and without a clockwork, it will not function at all. Therefore it can be assumed that Miku's heart is beating so fast that she does not hear anything else. Her heart is simply beating so intensely that she does not notice any other of her surroundings. She then says "now let's forget about the end", wheras "the end" probably stands for "death". Altogether, line 3 and 4 paint the image of the singer being close to ending her life, which causes her heart to beat rapidly but then she decides to forget about committing suicide. Continuing with paragraph 4: Are you a little broken? There is no sanity or security Let’s simply stop searching Miku asks herself, or her heart, if she's a little broken. In her last new lines of text she realizes that something isn't right with her. Instead of trying to point out the issues, she abruptly arrives at the conclusion that there is no "sanity or security" in, I assume, the whole world, which would match her world view I described earlier. She decides to "stop searching" for what could be the purpose in her life. If she really does feel like lifestock and has a daily routine like lifestock, which would obviously feel very pointless, then this would mean that she accepts the fact that her life doesn't have any purpose. To her, everyone appears to be insane and the future seems to be very uncertain as she doesn't feel like anything in life really is "secure". To conclude, Miku appears to be suffering from depression, feels like her life isn't worth living and she does not find a way out of that situation. However, she also shows that she hasn't lost hope yet. This got a bit longer than I expected it to be but I hope you found the read interesting if you've read it all!
My take is that "the sound of clockwork drowns out everything" means the awareness of our constant aging and time's unstoppable flow makes it hard to focus on anything else. And so, "for now let's forget about the end" means not thinking about that fact, which is tantamount to putting off solving the problem for later. But despite searching for a solution, Pino can't buy into religion or believe in the afterlife: "there are no spells or sorcery" (he also calls religion "a bunch of preconceived notions" on Slowmotion), therefore he has to face the music and accept that no one can change destiny (a hero won't come), so he decides to "simply stop searching". This is most consistent with the album title "しぼう" which can be read as "mortality", and also considering the fact that Slowmotion as well as other songs from the album deal with the subject of growing old, this is likely what Pino was going for. However there's another aspect to the album: "しぼう" can also be read as "aspiration" or "wish", so what he's saying is, I think, that despairing over our mortality and having dreams for the future are two sides of the same coin, and you can't have one without the other. "Everybody saw the same dream", in other words, everyone knows they will die, and so everyone wants to live forever. But if we lived forever our lives would mean nothing and we wouldn't care. Maybe we would never get anything done, since we can just keep putting if off for eternity. As for the animals, I have no clue.
I've listened to this song a lot over the years. It has such a unique feel to it, both in the sound and the visuals. And yet it's one of PinocchioP's most underrated works.
Sunny Subs oh ok thanks for response though. I just don't know what I'll do for translations since Coleena Wu posted on her Tumblr that she is going to be stepping down from VOCALOID translations soon...

One day I'll write an essay but for now, this song gives me a vivid sensation of being barely under anesthesia, the drops of anesthetic dripping, the roud operatory room lights, a heath attack, the bubbly line between water and air, just barely out of reach life and death you know.

This got a bit longer than I expected it to be but I hope you found the read interesting if you've read it all!
Ah I love people deciphering the meanings of songs! This was so swag I enjoyed reading this a lot!
