I read The Black Flamigo last year because Dean Atta was at a book event I go to and he was so lovely! His flight was delayed so he didn't get to do his panel but he was so great to talk to during the signing! Also someone bought him a flamingo teddy which was so cool!

Scattered thoughts: I just started the audiobook of Black Flamingo. As much as the rain disappointed you, the shots of the candle with the rain gave me so much peace. I had so much trouble picturing the Field Decks in An Unkindness of Ghosts (which was definitely ☆☆☆☆☆). ASOWAR! Oh my goodness. My library hold on the audiobook came in this morning. This was such a joy. Thank you.
I visualized the ship in An Unkindness of Ghosts as a giant ball with Baby Sun at the center, and the decks shifting around it like in Vortex, that old iPod wheel game. Like the farm decks were the closest to the sun, so I visualized them as rotating it, but like gravity is always to the floor even though there is no up.

I read An Unkindness of Ghosts in 2019, and liked it but didn't love it. I think it'd be a great book for me to re-read at some point. It looks comfy on the roof, a nice reading place! Wow, that's quite a bit of rain! No, I couldn't really imagine how the ship of An Unkindness of Ghosts looked, either. I have that problem with more books though. But yes, I could not really imagine how the decks shifted over each other. I really liked Full Disclosure, I read it in one afternoon which is unusual for me for a 300-page text novel. I read If It Makes You Happy by Claire Kann, which is about a Black queer fat teenager named Winnie and it involves food and family and a queerplatonic relationship, and I really liked it. The Black Flamingo was one of my favourite books last year and I am so glad to see people reading it and loving it. Felix Ever After is one of my most hyped books despite not being interested in Kacen Callendar's fantasy works (I think their contemporary is more my vibe) so to hear you love it has made me so happy. I just finished Adri from perpetualpages' video on how they loved Felix Ever After too and so when I finish my current audiobook (All Boys Aren't Blue - absolutely loving it by the way) I'm going to get this. Totally agree with you on connecting more with spoken word. I have a feeling that's why I prefer watching youtube videos to regular tv - because when people get passionate about something they develop this energy and rhythm that transfixes me. Karamo Brown’s memoir was really good - he talks a lot about growing up gay but also his identity as the son of an immigrant and how he would tell his classmates to call him K.K. So he wouldn’t be made fun of. And his time on The Real World and what he regrets and doesn’t regret about that experience. Also meeting his son for the first time was my favorite part of the book. So many great parts!
I also didn't know I'd love Black Flamingo so much... Love your comments on Felix ever after... Ahhh Don't call us dead.. Just read and listened to that too! And yes I bought a physical copy as well because in print it's awesome (I had borrowed the library book) It's really nice to have read books before you did and find that your thoughts are similiar to what I thought of as well. Just solidifies how much I love and respect your recommendations!

Regarding the ship description in An Unkindness of Ghosts - I totally agree that it doesn't come through to the reader. It's very unclear how the different parts of the ship connect - in my head a lot of it just sort of floats which I know is incorrect. In the end, I actually ended up visualizing USS Matilda as the space station in Babylon 5 just because the tone of the book gave me a similar vibe, but I'm quite certain that's not what it's "supposed" to look like.
I feel the same way about poetry. I much prefer to hear it spoken than read it so I guess I will be getting the audio for Don't Call Us Dead. And I wish I was better with plants because I love having them around but I feel bad cause I can't keep them alive. Also your joy is infectious and I am so happy for you!!
I read An Unkindness of Ghosts back in February (and loved it!) but I didn't even realize the ship's floors shifted, etc. So I guess that tells yah a little bit lol
I read the poet x during blackathon and it was an easy 5 star for me. As a white person my biggest take away was finding your voice. Black flamingo has been on my radar since averagejoereads loved it. Now with your endorsement i am definitely moving it up
I really agree about the poetry. I find it doesn't matter the poetry it always comes across better spoken than reading. I am in love with how much everyone is loving The Black Flamingo! It deserves so much love!!! 😍😍 okay, okay the more I hear about Felix Ever After, the sadder I am that I haven't read it yet... guess I gotta! 😊 Oooo yeah I had the same thing with An Unkindness of Ghosts like, I absolutely LOVED the characters and the narration but the way the setting was described left a little to be desired ya know? Like I could visualise a little bc, like, okay it's a ship and I guess I know what that looks like but beyond that there wasn't much in the way of getting the reader to visualise. The book is so incredible though!!
i was really amazed at how felix ever after was so real and how it showed us there is hatred towards trans people not just among cis straight people but also inside our own community. i was shocked because i have never seen this in a young adult novel and i really appreciated it so much.

Karamo Brown’s memoir was really good - he talks a lot about growing up gay but also his identity as the son of an immigrant and how he would tell his classmates to call him K.K. So he wouldn’t be made fun of. And his time on The Real World and what he regrets and doesn’t regret about that experience. Also meeting his son for the first time was my favorite part of the book. So many great parts!

Regarding the ship description in An Unkindness of Ghosts - I totally agree that it doesn't come through to the reader. It's very unclear how the different parts of the ship connect - in my head a lot of it just sort of floats which I know is incorrect. In the end, I actually ended up visualizing USS Matilda as the space station in Babylon 5 just because the tone of the book gave me a similar vibe, but I'm quite certain that's not what it's "supposed" to look like.
I loved Unkindness of Ghosts! I was fine without the descriptions of the ship, but I have trouble visualizing physical descriptions in books anyway.
I feel the same way about poetry. I much prefer to hear it spoken than read it so I guess I will be getting the audio for Don't Call Us Dead.
And I wish I was better with plants because I love having them around but I feel bad cause I can't keep them alive.

I read An Unkindness of Ghosts back in February (and loved it!) but I didn't even realize the ship's floors shifted, etc. So I guess that tells yah a little bit lol
I read the poet x during blackathon and it was an easy 5 star for me. As a white person my biggest take away was finding your voice. Black flamingo has been on my radar since averagejoereads loved it. Now with your endorsement i am definitely moving it up

I really agree about the poetry. I find it doesn't matter the poetry it always comes across better spoken than reading. If I can't find an audio copy of a poetry collection I tend to read them out loud softly to myself. I dunno they just make more sense to me that way. Love the vlog! 😊❤

Oooo yeah I had the same thing with An Unkindness of Ghosts like, I absolutely LOVED the characters and the narration but the way the setting was described left a little to be desired ya know? Like I could visualise a little bc, like, okay it's a ship and I guess I know what that looks like but beyond that there wasn't much in the way of getting the reader to visualise. The book is so incredible though!!
i was really amazed at how felix ever after was so real and how it showed us there is hatred towards trans people not just among cis straight people but also inside our own community. i was shocked because i have never seen this in a young adult novel and i really appreciated it so much.

I'm the same way, only mine are yarn or spring twists. I recently took my yarn twists out and I regret it so much, but I know they needed to come out.
