I remodeled an entire bathroom in my house just by watching YT videos. I already had an electrical background (although it was low voltage, EET major) but taught myself how to wire my entire bathroom; GCFI, potlights, vanity light, timer switch to a blower fan. Taught myself structural repair because I had rotted out floor joists. Taught myself plumbing; repositioned the shower, toilet and the sink. Taught myself how to mud drywall. Taught myself how to do tile. Taught myself how to do wainscotting. Yes I messed up A LOT, yes it took me 4 months for a 75 sq ft bathroom, but it still came out close to $15k cheaper than I was quoted (that was w/o them knowing about the structural damage.) aannnnddd i have the satisfaction of knowing I did it myself. I'm now watching garage building videos because that's my next project. We literally have the entirety of human knowledge at the tips of our fingers and carry it around in our pocket.
As I was watching this. I had questions in my head. As soon as they popped into my head, they got answered. It was like you were reading my mind. 100% a fan now.
Good morning. Nice to see you are getting us some footage to watch while it is so cold and nasty outside. Christmas is so close. See ya soon on another build.
Good video. I live in the Chicago area and I had a garage built in 1976 and it had a couple of features that I liked that I don’t see you incorporating in your garages. They are…..raising the concrete around the perimeter so when you park in the garage in the winter, the bottom plate doesn’t get wet, the other is using a 2x6 as a top plate for the rafters. This garage was built with 16” centers for walls and 24” centers for rafters 2x6 & 2x8 in corners, hip roof. The garage is 47 years old and in great condition. Thanks…Jim
A lot has changed in construction practices over the last 50 years. My grandparents' home had true 2"x4"s in it. They also dug out the basement using a mule! Everything was hand sawn and hand nailed as well!
Very nice, Ken! I learned two framing tips that will come in handy 'on the farm' here. You've got some strong boys just tossing those CDX sheets up on the roof - wow! Coffee's on me next time you're in the West Leb area.
Well done! And for those that didn’t see, PUT UP SHEATHING RIGHT AWAY!!!! 99.9% of framing disasters come from not getting sheathing up asap. Amazing how much strength a building gets from the plywood sheathing
@@MrThidj901 DIY you could build this entire structure with wiring and plumbing for like 10k if you source good quality used materials and do 90% of it yourself

Great , job Ken! Thank you, for an educational experience! I learn so much, on each and every , one of your video, s. I would love something like this in my backyard. Just renovated my 12x12 shed last summer with my brother, and this is litterally 4x the size of mine. I wish i had taken out the rotten floor completely and built a cement pad instead to put it on but i was out oftime. Also, i was amazed at how you just pivoted those roof trusses 180 on themselves in order to put em up, genius. So simple... but i would never have thought of it hehe
I enjoy watching your enthusiasm, but please note that if you were to show every detail of how the lumber is cut and measure , an award will be grant to you by the viewers.. best of luck. God Bless
I wish you were in Florida! I would love for you to build for me!!! Great job, great attitude and good workmanship/practices! Peace from Daytona Beach and a very Merry Christmas!
Roofing is like going on vacation!!!!! Did you really just say that. 😂 Having a guy pass shingle helps alot. We go 6 nails per shingle per manufacturer. Looks great!!
Nice job!. I came across your video doing a search for garage ideas. I am cutting some of my own lumber to cut costs. I cut 2 or 3 boards or 2x4 each day. I figure by spring/summer I have enough to do half '. lol I have chainsaw mill
I didn’t see how (or if) you attached the sill plate of the framing to the concrete. Is that not necessary where you are? Fantastic job of filming and clear and to-the-point narration. You should be a teacher of construction as well. I also noticed what looked like the owner helping you out as simple laborer. If so, I applaud you for recruiting his help. Thank you.
Enjoyed watching your work , it sort of de mystified building a garage, which is great timing as I am just starting my build . Concrete is done just waiting for timber delivery . I am using 117mm x 47mm , nearly 4x2 , for all studs and roof joists . Ridge beam is 200mm x 80 so slightly different to your specs . 7M X 6M size . thank you for all the tips .
Im impressed that arthritis didn’t stop Ken a long time ago like its killin me at 45 years old general contracting for 22 years. Anyways, the only thing I’ve seen in Cleveland, Ohio area is the sill plate resting above the pad on a curb. So they form the pad to have a sill curb to keep the framing above puddles or snow. Anyways great work and what’s your secret Ken where’s the fountain of youth buddy? Lol
I wish there was someone like you in eastern Pennsylvania, you do a great and fair priced job , I would definitely hire you to build me a 2 car garage 👍
Nice work 🎉 May I ask the difference in cost between that vinyl siding vs clap lap in wood or composite? And what would the difficulty be in the trusses being open in the middle with them higher to allow for an upper room? Great videos!!
It would be great for you to do a live feed and invite the guys for a get to know you video in the off season. We don’t know anything about the guys! Merry Christmas to you and the guys.
Was there nothing between sill plate and the concrete slab or did I miss it? It is apparently a must around here (Sweden) to have tar paper or something similar between "ground contact" and first row of boards, even if they are pressure treated.
Do you have a video on detailed step by step grading for slab ? From bare ground to ready to pour concrete? Or can I get an estimate of a 24 x 30 garage slab 4 inch deep?

Thanks
Nothing is easy in winter outside construction. I know , I've done it nearby. Most builders are in Arizona in the winter.

I like cathedral style roof trusses . Makes garage seem larger and makes room for a car lift
Maybe they are going to drywall, and lower ceilings are easier to heat if they go that route
But you'd have to center the lift so you wouldn't have a two car garage then.

hi good video THX Ed what would the difference for a metal roof be ?
Thanks again Ed
About 3 percent more

What is holding that framing to the concrete? What’s to keep that building from moving off it’s foundation?
We use wedge anchors
looks nice! if you were doing a metal roof, do you sheet it first or run perlins across or?
Just plywood with roof wrap
Enjoyed this video, curious what thickness osb you used for the walls?
7/16”
Just wondering you did square your walls and brace them off before you put your OSB up just asking
Yes definitely thanks for watching
On your cape style houses, do you use 2x10 or 2x12 for the roof trusses? Same question for the stair stringers? Thanks for the cool content
2x12 stair stringers. It depends on the width of the building for rafter dimensions. 24’ I use 2x10
Thanks Ken!
When you were placing the truses up, how did you support them without falling?
Typically a 2x4 nailed to the wall as a brace
@@kenskarpentry The truses? I would think he'd use braces for the walls but I didn't see it. But the truses it seemed like he just balanced them on there. I'm trying to learn, any advice helps.
Do you ever put rain gutters and down spouts on your garages?
Or is that up to the owner to get someone else in for that?
We don’t
Is the metal roof cost more? Good job thank you for sharing
Metal is less if you’re hiring it done.
You seem like a pleasure to work with.
Thanks
VERY NICE WORK. is it 28000 in materials or materials and labor?
Thanks. Materials and labor
Great work as usual

Wowzer, nice numbers.
Thanks
Mr Ken, what’s best roof wrap and shingles brand type to use. Thanks
They’re all pretty good. Shingles are mostly IKO
is there a break down of materials used eg..
11 yard concrete
12 - 2x4x10'
80 - 2x4x8'
40 - 4x8 1/2' osb etc..
?
Sorry no
GOOD JOB
Is there a reason to put reason the OSB should be put on horizontal?
Could you please advise the price difference in the metal verses asphalt
About 3 percent more for shingles
Crazy I built mine from a home depot kit on a cement slab for 15000 complete in 2007
Wow
Do you need gable end trusses
Outstanding
Thanks
How much profit did you make off this job? How much was the cost of the lumber?
Generally materials are about half
Excellent craftsmanship! What pitch is that roof? Looks a bit steeper than my 4/12, such a great structure 👍
Thanks it’s a 6/12 pitch
Ken do you guys make your own trusses? If so what size detentional lumber do you use? 2x6 2x8?
Typically we don’t make our own
When you put the frames up, do you somehow bind them to the concrete? Or does the weight of the garage hold it in place?
We use wedge anchors after the walls are in place
So efficient!
Thanks
