  • The Pipes and Drums of the 1st Battalion Royal Gurkha Regiment playing the bagpipes.
1RGR joined the nation in showing their support for frontline workers tackling the coronavirus outbreak.
The Pipes and Drums struck up ‘Scotland the Brave’ at Sir John Moore Barracks in Folkestone to join bagpipers across the country taking part in #PipeUpForKeyWorkers.
The Pipes and Drums, who play at 1RGR’s marching pace of 140bpm, celebrate the Regiment’s proud links with Scottish infantry units.
The first Gurkha pipe band was trained by 2nd Royal Scots in 1895 in Burma, while today’s pipers wear Douglas tartan to mark the affiliation between the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and 7th Gurkha Rifles in 1949.
Playing in the Pipes and Drums is a secondary role for the unit's assault pioneers, who are infantry soldiers trained to carry out basic combat engineering tasks like building defensive positions or clearing obstacles.
