The most obvious way to stop the boats is to open safe and legal routes for asylum seekers. The French offered to help build a processing centre in France, the UK Conservative government refused that offer. Until the UK government do that they won't ever stand a chance of stopping people smuggling. Any politician who can't see that is either thicker than a brick, or is simply using the plight of asylum seekers to push their own political agenda.

And the Tories continue to waste MILLIONS of pounds of British taxpayers money on the Rwandan vanity project while as has been said, processing centres could have been built in Calais and Dieppe for a lot less than the Rwanda gimmick.Just one migrant has gone to Rwanda, volunteering to take the 3 grand and the free board, which will cost us a hell of a lot more than the 3 grand he took!😾

Max. The terrorism analogy is more to do with the idea of pursuing those who organise this at the management level. That is how you break organised crime gangs. The small boats are a business, not unorganised chaos of lots of small gangs as Tories like to talk about. The Tories are focussed on those who are crossing not those who profit from them. Meanwhile, safe and legal routes being put back into place (Bet Labour take France up on the Calais processing centre) relieve the need for crossings. Gangs will only do this if the profit is there. Reduce profit, reduce crossings.

I think he's comparing the terrorists to the gangs who are taking the money, getting the boats and sending off refugees on a dangerous crossing. To that end, you can target the organisations. So yes, you need to provide mechanisms for refugees to apply before they get onto a small boat. Create a proper process. Rwanda is a gimmick which is internationally illegal so terminating is a no brainer.
The reservation I have is that, having created the process, checking the applicants and maybe refusing some of them - what do you do with those that are refused? I imagine you could work with Belgian and French authorities to determine if would be acceptable for said people to remain in those countries or maybe they should be returned to their country of origin as per EU regs and treaties. However, I can see their may still be some who will seek a small boat even after being refused entry to the UK.

    • @saba1030

Most of those refugees, which are coming over to the UK, have been already in one of the EU27 member states, claimed for asylum and either got tolerated, where the deadline is running out, short before getting deported, or have been refused, because they didn't fulfill the needed criteria for asylum, and are short before getting deported.
Since Brexit the UK can't do those push backs towards the EUropean Continent/France anymore, the refugees know that as well, as news "travel fast" these days.
Problem with deportation is, that most countries, where those refugees are coming from, don't take their own people back...
The EU27 are trying to do so since years, doing deals with various countries etc, all doesn't really help, because the smugglers are telling the refugees to "throw away" their papers...and then the authorities of that country of arrival has the job, to find out, where that person is coming from, ask the authorities of that country, to hand out papers for that person...which also is quite difficult as well... All not as easy, as it might look like...

It was damaging bringing in such a right wing outspoken critic of Starmer and the Labour Party in Natalie Elphicke. While it was a big two fingers up to Sunak, she’s far too right wing for Labour. And what was even more annoying was seeing the likes of Annalise Dodds and on QUESTION TIME,Lisa Nandy, defending Starmer’s decision and both saying she’d apologised for her comments. All the people I’ve spoken to about this have said the same thing…WHAT’S STARMER PLAYING AT?

Starmer & Labour have no gimmicks-except for saying the word gimmicks as their new buzzword. Saw about 15 minutes of it & he must have said it 500 times. Protecting the border is what is needed, but his dismissal of opening up safe routes is hugely disappointing. As you would expect from a Tory trying to appeal to far right Tories it is all punishment & no compassion. Also had no answer for Elphicke-but of course he cannot, because it is just a gimmick.

I've been done with Sir Keir for a while now, he's not going to change anything in Britain it will be the same austerity but under a more pleasant regime.

Starmer says a lot of things. See his broken pledges to become Labour leader as a key example. The only thing that separates Sir Keir Rodney Starmer and Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, is that Starmer knows how to use a comb.

Starmer isn't perfect, but think about this for a sec. You despise the Tories, right? Labour is the main antidote. Challenge Starmer when he's in power absolutely, but do not let the Tories bounce back! I'm shocked and angered by the Elphicke deflection too, I'm a Lib Dem voter, she is the complete opposite to what I stand for in every category, but you have to back Labour if you want to stop the Tories (unless you're in the blue wall ofc, then it'd be a safe Lib Dem vote, at least in my case)

Cameron tried to run the UK as he had promised in the leadership election of 2005.
      It’s been a disaster.

If he doesn't we'll get to that hurdle, but more Lib Dems on the front benches will help challenge it (I'm a Lib Dem voter so sorry for a bit of bias)

The problem is as usual.Starmer pandering to the far right and ignoring the rest of the country. He talks a lot and says so little just like a lawyer. Is stama a million times better than sunak?Absolutely. Is he really any good that we shall see

    • @kindmulberry7196

He's not pandering to the far right. The far right is creating a toxic culture to divide and split, by not backing Labour or the Lib Dems (the latter in the blue wall and in Scotland) you're asking for more Tory disaster and. Reform Faragist party which will influence the government way more, hence the far-right rhetoric. with Labour, the Faragist are gonna be out of steam, they won't be able to influence labour at all. The likes of Galloway are NOT progressive and are NOT a positive example. The far-left is not the answer.
