Hi Peter. I was at your nursery in 95. A real WOW moment. Couldn't believe all those incredible Scotts pines. Something I can only dream about where I am. And haven't forgotten how generous you were in giving me a lift back to the train station. God bless mate. Hopefully I can return again oneday.
This tree could make a lovely homage to the world's tallest known living tree, Hyperion, with those short branches tight to the trunk adding significant scale.
Watching you just break branches while trying to bend them gives me a ton of confidence. It's like the old saying "No crying over spilt milk." Bend the branches and if they break just keep moving forward.
Mosten Times, when branches crack, they still keep on living. At least in my experience. My Fukien tea has the one or other cracked branch, and they are still green
The variety at @07:15 you are showing to us is a Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' if I am not mistaken. I have discovered this lovely tree next to my home recently and have collected the seeds now for the next season. It has stunning leaves and great colour for sure. Happy to see, you are showing all your lovely bits, pieces and corners of your nursery and I would have guessed, that you have an example of this tree too. 🍁🍂
From South Africa these visions of your amazing nursery are a joy and inspiration- not easy finding lovely maples like yours - I have had an interest in these trees for around 12 years and have about 40 trees - never realised how slow they would be but they are my favourite venture after getting home when I have been out , after greeting my lovely wife and dogs, just walking about and looking for progress about my little collection - you are so blessed and how well you have developed your farm- I am 70 now but after Coved we will try get to see your place in person- thank you sincerely for your lovely videos- regards from South Africa
Wish everyone here a peaceful christmas. We are facing a big change in the world, but watching Peter going about his business the way he does, at his age is truly inspiring . Cant believe he is 80 years old... Merry Christmas everyone 🌳🎅
Hi Peter! Bonsai isn't very popular here in Norway but your videos have inspired me to make my own from a tree from our forest! Thanks for the superb vids! Keep them coming!
When I noticed this channel, I was thinking about a book about the bonsai hobby, written by Peter Chan. I got it as a present, I think around the year 1993. I've just realized it's you!
hi peter. thank you for another lovely informative video, really enjoyable. the maple whose name you couldnt remember is it Acinitifolium. Similar shaped leaves to the aconitum, monkshood.
Nice job. Agree very much with you on tertiary wiring. The number of iterations and style revisions I’ve done on trees over the years even amazes me. BTW your shirt is stunning. Obviously a gift from the new world. It’s a real gem. Looking forward to looking at the development of your cuttings. My success averages out at around 40 percent. It could be greater but I let them weather outside from day 1 and I certainly pay the price. Take care. Best wishes for a lovely Christmas with your staff and family. Merry Christmas Take care. Craig NZ
This metasequoia would have lend itself perfect for the style of a giant redwood, perhaps cathedral. Because of the big straight trunk and the tiny leaves. Very nice species! I hope the cuttings will take.
Hi Peter, stumbled upon your videos and I’m entirely in love with them. Is there any videos of the results after one year. Would love to see how the bonsai you have wired looks like a year later and how to maintain them? Maybe I’m impatient but it’s just that it would be great to see what I’m aiming to get after a year or two. I have never done a bonsai and you’ve definately inspired me to start.
I have made about 400 videos on various topics. I revisit some projects from time to time, so you will have to trawl through the videos to catch up on progress. Enjoy the videos.
Hello Peter. Have you ever tried bending a thick branch by cutting small ‘v’s’ in the branch to partially thin the branch locally so that you can bend it then wrap it in raffa and tape and wire to hold it. I saw a video once and wondered how successful it could be. When ever I see a video of yours when you walk round the nursery I am always amazed at the number of trees you have in development, how do you keep track of them all. Compliments of the season.
I have just watched it. This is basically the question I asked Peter. I would love to see it after time to see what happens to the bark on the trunk and main branch.
How can you see the difference between metasequoia and metasequoia pixie? Smaller leafs are easy to see when you have both next to each other. I only have one, probably the standard metasequoia! Greets from Belgium
I’m also curious because a bonsai shop in my town has a dawn redwood but I’m not sure which it is. The guy that grows them is never there only girls that don’t speak english. I want to buy one.
Peter this "SPRINGS" to mind (pun intended) the famous line, 'water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink', 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. Loving the early winter shots of the trees. Will you be doing a video on selection/trimming of Deciduous branches/twigs or is this a spring activity video?
Has this beautiful tree always been called a meta sequoia or was it formerly a mega sequoia ? Great show again, btw those shirts are getting increasingly awesome, I'd subscribe , Peter Wows Hawaii !
Ugh, this tree stressed me out! So many leaves falling off, practically just from breathing on it! If Peter can make anything of this thing, I will consider it a miracle.
Hi Peter, I hope your cuttings took from this tree. I've been trying to roots cuttings from ordinary redwoods all year. I think some took but I'm waiting until spring to start poking at them. When would be the best time to start an air layer in British and Irish climates?
Ive took some redwood cuttings in fall and put them in water first, I saw them rooting. Have potted them up. Airlayer is best time in spring when the buds open (sending hormones to the roots)
@@murray821 thank you. I've never put my cuttings in water first. Might try that next time. There are some redwoods in a local park I've taken cuttings from. I might ask if I can put an air layer on a branch.
Hey. New subscriber here. Recently got into bonsai and currently trying to grow a black pine from seed. Left in fridge for 3 weeks and now put onto the window seal to get some sunlight. Should i leave it in the fridge for longer? I'd love to come visit your nursery if that's allowed.
Most winter nights are between minus 2 or 3 to plus 5 C. The coldest it gets is around minus 8 C maybe once every five years - but it is only for a few hours at night.
I wonder if dawn redwood sets roots from cuttings easily, would almost be worth attempting to smuggle it into america in a prison pocket, now I just need a willing mule to carry it to me!
Does anyone know of a source of the “Pixie” cultivar in the United States? I have had excellent luck in my young bonsai journey with Redwoods and MetaSequoias in particular. I wound love to buy or trade for a cutting / seedling of the pixie on “this side of the pond” if anyone knows a source? Please feel free to direct message or email, me. Thank you.
It has a less pretty name in America and is called sweetgum. It grows here in the warm more humid areas and down into Mexico. So I bet it work for you. Where I live we don't have them, but apparently their seed shells are considered a danger and messy. So you might want to look into that aspect, but they are very pretty.
I think I would work at Heron's for less than minimum wage. It would be worth it to have a job that I actually care about. Tending to nature, and creating beauty, sounds much more fulfilling than being a manager at a food store. 😂

A nice plants scenery here.
Great.
It's a song and flower for you
I'm two weeks new to this channel after buying our first bonsai. Thank you for all the information and entertainment.
When I noticed this channel, I was thinking about a book about the bonsai hobby, written by Peter Chan.
I got it as a present, I think around the year 1993. I've just realized it's you!
The foliage looks exactly like, what I would call, a bald or swamp cypress. I love these trees! They are so vigorous.
Dawn redwood and bald cypress are related
I have a 2yo coastal redwood on my patio bc of Peter, I’ve baby’d it but it’s thriving in the Florida humidity!
that was a nice looking redwood bet when your done with it, it will look fantastic
Love ur channel..your such a great person and teacher..truely and inspiration
Hello peter that tree you got from you friend is a hell of a tree lad. I love all your videos .
Mighty Dawn Redwood 😭, I've never seen that variety before 😱. Thx for sharing Peter, 🙏 Cheers.
So nice to see a Pixie! 😍 thanks Peter 🪴
Thank you sir... You really don't know how calming Ace helpful your videos are.... May the forever be enjoyed
I'm sure you have your reasons but I'm surprised you didn't air layer those big branches. But later you answered my question. Thank you.
hi peter. thank you for another lovely informative video, really enjoyable. the maple whose name you couldnt remember is it Acinitifolium. Similar shaped leaves to the aconitum, monkshood.
Thank you - bad memory in my old age. The Japanese call this maple "Make-jaku" or peacocks tail because the shape of the leaf is like a peacocks tail.

I love this tree.
Man I can't wait till one day they ship to the US.
I love this tree Peter, thank you!
I'm watching this as hail currently pelts my roof

Not in Marsden.
We had torrential rain just yesterday which depresses anyone, but it soon goes away.

Yes that is a standard way of doing it.

Always metasequoia, it's the Latin name for the species.
Luar biasa , mantaf bang, makasih sudah berbagi ilmu
Ugh, this tree stressed me out! So many leaves falling off, practically just from breathing on it! If Peter can make anything of this thing, I will consider it a miracle.
it is a semi-deciduous species, so not abnormal..
If it’s deciduous, could all those falling leaves be natural for Autumn??
Hi Peter. Do you have or have you ever cultivated the giant sequoia?
I have tried a couple but they dont make good bonsai. Very difficult to make them look convincing as bonsai.
nice

Air layering in April/May is best.
@@peterchan3100 that's great advice. Thank you Peter. 😊
Wow...👏👏👏
Redwoods generally don't like wire, even if branches aren't broken.

Yes we are open and have lots of visitors all the time. Do come.
@@peterchan3100 great. I'll definitely come by some time, thanks. Carl
Could you have split the branches you wanted to bend more?
How cold does it get where you are Peter?

@@peterchan3100 ahh lucky guys lol. -20 is not uncommon here
Tree might need more fertilizer or silica is a good nutrient so the branches don't break as easily.
Sar India delivery available in your online website???

I am sure you can buy it in the US
The Johnston Company .. in Cali I believe, they ship quality saplings, dawn and Coastal redwoods

Thank you.
I have successfully taken cuttings of metasequoia (although not Pixie) and I have found the secret to be maintaining a very high humidity
So you put em in water to get roots or direct in soil?
Can I grow Liquid amber in india?or something like maple india?? Any suggestions peter??
You can try

poor tree, I wonder if they feel pain
Another hard tree to airlayer is the persimmon, my success rate is zero. 😁
🍻🍎👌
I'm not a bonsai expert... But if he kept that tree outside... In the wind... It would be more sturdy... My opinion... Again not even any plant expert
I’m no expert either, but I do recall seeing this tree growing outside in one of Peter’s previous videos. In my limited experience Metasequoia branches break very easily.
