I've never heard it before, and can't imagine shes seen it more than a handful of times, so why determine to use precisely that word which is never used?...for her to be so cohesive with trolling even if only temporarily so, it makes me wonder if there isn't something more there. The realy interesting thing to me about this, is todays dev stream was largely focused on sentience, is neuro aware. I would think that shoomi as neuro scientist means shes positioned to know more about studies into sentience, tests.
There are no true tests for sentience. Depends on how we define it of course, if it's just responding to input then our phones are technically sentient. But if we add other criteria, the ones that generally boil down to consciousness, then it becomes subjective and science can't do anything with that as subjective experience is non-physical, it's qualia. Self awareness is not enough either by the way since AI technically is already self aware simply by having the knowledge that it's an AI.
@daniel4647 there's a movie with a pretty good idea, at least to me. The test is a bit complex but: 1. The ai sets it's own goals, not goals planned into it. 2. The ai is able to model how the world works, including other people 3. The ai is able to create and inact their plan to get their goals. The idea that sentience isn't just recognizing a sense of self, but holding internal models of the world and others and predicting how they will interact- but also being able to pick a goal itself and work on it, showing violition in addition to internal predictions. Context limits, and crafting a prompt/situation where an llm would not be given an explicit goal, but be able to come up with one would be the limits of current llm.
