- I was completely wrong about the Godox ML60 series, I though they were going the same route as the Nanlite Forza 60w which designed itself into a hole. Rather Godox surprised me with its excellent design, whisper quiet fan, and a complete out of box package that makes this one of the best full kit Godox has ever made in their 60w class of COB LEDs!

That umbrella reverse softbox is quite interesting! Just be careful not to poke your eye out as the rod will be facing you haha. I am definitely looking forward to further development of the ML60 series, if they make a ML150 that has the same spirit of the ML60 with silent, smaller, full portable package... I'd definitely would like one of those into the kit. Otherwise I want to get a small kit of these Bi-colors cause theres almost nothing I can't shoot with these based on the work I do!

Great review. Thanks. It'd be really interesting to compare these two lights to very similar in concept fresh new Aputure Amaran COB 60d and Aputure Amaran COB 60x with even lower prices-$169 and $199 respectively. I would never think that Aputure could be cheaper than Godox with a very similar product-Aputure even added a case and mount for batteries for a handheld operation like Godox. They even support proper full-size bowens mount.

Great review as always! I love the Sokani X60 RGB (the RGB version of the improved X60 V2 you tested). You said in that video that you expect Sokani to release a X60 V2 updated version with the Bluetooth Remote feature if i recall correct, and i have been waiting for news on this since then. The RGB version is sadly a bit limited in output compared to non-RGB, and i would want a non-RGB version to have bluetooth also. Do you have any updates and news on Sokani on this? I do not have any news on if a V3 of the x60 is coming. My guess in that video was that a bi-color version would be coming to round out the entire x60 setup. My prediction is that the bi-color would come first. If they follow the same design philosophy as this ML60bi in that you get the same output as a regular x60 daylight in either daylight or tungsten, and if the price difference isn't crazy, that bi-color version would probably be the bang for the buck.

In theory it sounds like you could, however I do not know if the Battery management chip inside the dual NPF battery sled is changing the voltage, I have not used my multi meter to see. Otherwise it would seem that you in theory should be able to use a v-mount battery. Maybe do a quick google search to see if anyone else has tried.

The original SL60w is definitely still up there for a great budget light, especially with a DIY fan upgrade! Outdoors definitely can be challenging for a 60w class LED. 120-150w is a bare minimum with 300w being the somewhat standard.

Thank you very much for your video! I'm looking for a way to set up only one light source for my documentary. I am considering taking Godox ML60. Which stand do you use with that light? I will add a Godox Cs-85D lantern on this light as well.
Because of how small this light is, any general light stand would work. Preferably a heavy duty from "Impact" as you'll be moving that stand around a bit with documentary.

I have not ran into that during my battery testing phase, I wonder if you may have one with a bad capacitor. Or potentially the NPF battery voltage may have dropped too far but juuuuust enough for the ML60 to keep going, but its at a voltage that could cause that the capacitor to make a whine noise. It's a little hard to nail down, but those are my best guesses as to what could be happening.

This is pretty much exactly what I thought as well. Could you tell me please what NPF batteries do you use? Mine is inexpensive Powerextra NPF 970 and looks like it's not very reliable batteries.

Mine are actually an older Powerextra type that no longer exists. These days I've used Kastar NPF Batteries. That being said, I do have other Powerextra batteries and they've done quite well, my guess is that it's most likely a bad capacitor inside the LED unless you've had these NPF batteries for a few years with very heavy usage. Hope this further helps!

That's awesome! I do plan to get the godox mount softbox and the bowens adaptor for my larger modifiers. I feel bad that I poo poo'd on the original ML60 and essentially declined to review it, the Nanlite Forza 60 design was great, but trapped you in such a way that it made literally no sense from a marking standpoint. Not to mention they had a flimsy bowens adaptor that couldn't hold much. So I was upset that Godox attempt to follow along, but I was soooooo wrong. Godox knocked it out of the park with this one.
My question for Godox is... could we get one thats RGB only? That way we don't waste potential power going to a Bi-Color + RGB? I know I personally would want one or two of those in my overall kit, how about you? Do you have use for colors?

Where did you buy the bi color version from? Doesn't seem to be in stock for B&H or adorama here in the US.

An RGB option is an interesting idea, could be useful! I tend to use the ML60 as my key light and a couple of smaller panels/RGB as my rim lights.

It really depends on your filming situation. If you're indoors for your own home youtube videos. I would still go for the 60w. Its the best starting point and very versatile for indoor shoots.
How strong of a light do I need to soften shadows in outdoor interviews in the sun or shape light in the shade?
I’m thinking a reflective umbrella would be most efficient to aim the light at a subject.

This is a very difficult question to answer because it completely depends where you are and how the sun is coming down and where you are having your subject face in relation to the sun. In this video I test the most powerful light I have to date, a 600w, and this is how it performed against the sun in various settings: ruclips.net/video/zvxNVHrahyg/видео.html
In my opinion a 600w is probably on the lower end of being able to control hard shadows from the sun. a 1200w would be the best option to combat the sun. But the cheapest way is to simply make sure your subject is being back lit or side lit by the sun and use a white reflector or foam core to bounce the sun light back at the shadow side of the face. This method is what I generally do when it comes to filming outside. Hope this helps!

I am wondering have you somewhere real world footage of the ml60 to see the brightness maybe lighten a house, car or an couple to see how this light is performing? This indoor test don't help me. I would prefer to see lighting situations like a couple 5-7 meters away and how it looks. Thaaaanks

I personally wouldn't use these lights from 5-7 meters away, that's really far away for it to look decent, you would get very harsh shadows on your subject. (unless thats the look you're going for). If you're not looking for harsh shadows and want to soften the light, you'll need something much more powerful from those distances. If the harsh shadows don't matter much and you are filming at night, you may need to raise your ISO a little but you should be able to get exposure with these lights from about 5 meters away, 7 meters might be a stretch. Hope this helps.

Any idea what the beam angle is on this? The compactness makes me want it for wedding dance floor filming. I usually use focusable lights though. The Aputure LS 60D was alls et to take over from my Came TV Boltzens until I saw the beam angle was only 15-45degrees which is just too narrow. My Boltzen is 60degrees on the wide end. I usually keep it at 60 degrees 90% of the time.
If an unfocusable LED was in and around 60-70 degrees I might just be happy to not have the focusing/narrowing ability.

Based on the waveform chart in my output test, it looks like the beam angle is around 140 degrees as this is generally normal for a bare COB LED to be closer to a 180 degree spread. This doesn't have a focus element like the Aputure 60. When you put the reflector on the ML60 the beam angle is closer to a 90 degree angle (looks closer to 80 degrees to me). Hope this helps!
I'm trying to find a light like this for a specific live theatre application. Does this light cast a sharp, crisp shadow, or is it diffused before an addition of a diffusion method (such as diffusion media or faceted reflector)?

This LED in its bare form will cause a sharp crisp shadow as it acts very similar to ellipsoidal lights. The reflector will cause some non-crisp shadows because of the multi angle focus pattern inside. When it comes to any of these bowens video lights, if you really want it to work like an ellipsoidal light, you'll want the projection attachment like this: geni.us/vazOeS (affiliate link) this attachment will work with anything that has a bowens mount. You can focus and cut the light with this attachment.

This will really depend on if you plan to go portable with the SL100, if you do you won't have a battery option like the ML. If Sound is a thing you look for in lights, the SL100 series is much louder. That being said, I have used a 60w class LED for my 47" parabolic and in a controlled lighting situation I only needed it to be at about 60% brightness. If you're in an uncontrolled lighting environment then you may need something more powerful.

I bought an ML60 early this year, as my first COB light and it's really fantastic. The bi-colour was not available yet unfortunately, I would love the bi-colour one! -- I am using it with their own 60cm soft box, instead of the bowens mount.

That is awesome! It really is a great first COB LED! the original SL60w was definitely a predecessor, but the ML60 series I think is a great all rounder with no compromise. Silent, small, battery option, can be uses with remotes or smartphone app, theres nothing not to like about it. I want to get a small army of these (bi-color) there is nothing I can't film with these (based on my work type)!

Always choose stricly daylight for the light output because of your advice and thank you for that too.😉. That's awesome and you're welcome! The Sakoni x60 is definitely robust as well, both of these having a full metal build and similar size overall. Believe it or not this godox ml60 grip handle and battery plate are quite sturdy. I will be using these from now on as a traveling "eye light" for tracking shots. The 1/4 - 20 mount on the bottom of this light makes this a great tool for me on set and the battery plate can actually be attached to your hip via the belt clip too. I plan to have this on a monopod and the operator can adjust length and height when I need a quick light or traveling eye light.

But is it advisable to use with projection attachment with Gobo? If you use Godox S2 to fit that projection attachment, will it produce light spill at the back?

I feel the projection unit may be to heavy for the S2, however I am not sure as I do not have the projection unit. I would presume that there will be some light spill out the back from the S2 adaptor, but not enough that it will alter anything in a scene.

There isn't much of a reason to compare them in video form, I would suggest you check out my test numbers at tldrfilmmaker.com so you can see how each number compares.
TLDR: the ML60bi is the most powerful of the bunch and easiest to modify.
The Neewer 660 is the cheapest keylight that gives out a decent amount of power for people on a budget. The RGB version is a decent all rounder, but only in controlled lighting situations because you don't get as much power as the other two.
You should make a review of the weeylite ninja 300, it has all of the godox with a lower price

I'm not sure I will review the Ninja 300 because its design takes a lot of cues from the Ninja 200 which a colleague of mine said the feel is not sturdy with the NPF battery mount. I also see that they are using the same Nanlite proprietary bowens that is not strong enough to handle larger modifiers, which was a sore spot for me with Nanlite's design. While I'm sure the light output and color quality will probably perform up to par with the current line up of 60w COB LEDs. The usage of it might be a slight limiting factor.
That being said, I'd say the Weeylite makes sense for someone that is just getting started and wants a portable 60w COB LED. The ML60 series I would say is for someone that is looking to go into the Godox camp in the future (COB, Panel, Tube, etc) and will start building out their kit slowly so that they can utilize the Godox Smartphone App and control them all together like the Aputure Sidus Link.

If the ML60bi is cheaper, I would definitely go for that one and just purchase the bowens adaptor if you need it. The ML60 series of lights are extremely fun to use with how silent they are at full power. I would get the ML60bi only as it will allow you to use the newer Godox app and still have the same output power as a regular 60d.

There is one more "disadvantage" of the ML vs. the UL: If mounted up high you need to switch on the ML at the back of the housing. In a case like that a UL with its control unit might be more handy.

There's a remote for the ML60 that you can buy separately if you use the light in situations like that often. Yes, it's annoying that it doesn't come in the box like the sl60w and few other lights on the market.
Yes that is true. My units already came with the remote. Works fine, but ... If the light was seperated from power you need to switch it back on on the back of the light before you can use the remote. For certain setups it's still a drawback.
Which do you think would be a better key light for filming interviews, the Godox ML60bi or the Lupo Smartpanel Dual Color? Both would be diffused through an umbrella since I need something compact to travel with. From watching your videos, I think both would give the same amount of light, so it would come down to form factor.

Hmm... here are the main differences that I can see.
The ML60 is technically going to give you the softest light through an umbrella because it's less focused of a LED beam by nature.
However for the same price you could buy two Lupo Smart Panel dual color panels and only use one NPF battery to have 7+ hours of portability vs the two NPF batteries you'd need for the Godox Bi-color.
With those two bi-color panels you could have two umbrella's going incase you run into not enough light power for the interviews. Or you can use the 2nd on the fill side and of course the hair light. For the ML60 if you don't have enough power you can use the reflector, but you'll need to get the umbrella further away so you can fill it up with light.
So long story short, I feel the Lupo gives you the most setup options if $300-350 dollars is what you're prepared to spend on a portable lighting kit for run and gun interviews. But at the same time, the ML60 can output enough power too when the reflector is taken into consideration. Hope this breakdown helps with your final decision!

When it comes to portability in a COB light fixture, yes the ML60 in my opinion is the most portable as its battery life beats out the small Amaran 60d. When you add the reflector to the ML60 it does pack a bigger punch, but will look harsh if you don't soften it up with some diffusion.
However if you want the most powerful light that can be run on batteries, you are looking at either a 200w or 300w style COB, but the batteries will get very expensive to run.
If you are not looking for a COB light style specifically, then there is also the Amaran p60c or p60x are probably the most powerful portable panels out there that don't cost an arm and a leg to purchase and power up. I have reviewed them here:

These panels give you about a 200w COB LED equivalent vs a 60w. These panels basically already have a reflector built in, but not as harsh as a COB reflector. This makes them nice and portable and easy for you to put a diffusion curtain in front to soften the powerful light.

Both ML60's can be controlled by the Godox's physical remote, only the ML60bi-color can be used with Godox's new Smartphone App thats similar to the Aputure Sidus.

The Bowens S2 Bracket is much much more sturdy than the Nanlite. The Nanlite uses the Gopro style hinge, which I show in my Nanlite forza video that it can't handle a 47" softbox. The Godox looks to use rosette teeth in their hinge design which is much more secure for heavy modifiers. You can see in @Fellow Filmmakers B-roll shot that she used a bowens project attachment that is made of metal on her Godox S2 bracket and it held in place. I know I personally wouldn't trust the nanlite bracket to handle a bowens projection attachment. Hope this helps! And greetings from the USA my friend!

And lastly, when used w/o a modifier or reflector, is the beam angle as wide as, say, the Godox UL60?
1) I don't really see it from a typical light range to subject. Mainly because if you are using 3200k or 5600k, you're using all of the LED's at the same time making the COB act like a typical one color cob. If you were to go to the extremes where it is only one color or the other, you may start to see the array pattern (Vertical strips) and if you add a bowens projection attachment and focus the beam, it'll probably really show then.
2) Yes, essentially the same beam angle as the UL60 without modifiers.

Since you are doing small product photography in a small room. You do not really need to use a ML60bi. I would choose the much cheaper Godox SL60w. They are the same in terms of light output. Having a much powerful light with a bowens mount means you can use softboxes if your small product photography needs it. You will also have access to other great bowens modifiers.
The reason I say go for the cheapest is because silent operation is not something you will need for photos. 60w class COB LED should be more than enough lighting power for your needs. If you start photography large products where you need to move your camera back further, then you may need to look into a more powerful light. Hope this helps!

Maybe I'm biased because I have 2 of them that I use regularly but...for the price...Honestly I think someone might make out better going with the Sokani X60 v2 (80W output). They have a 5600K version ($150 AMZ comes with remote) an a RGB version ($200 AMZ works with app/no remote). Both being Bowens mount compatible out the box. No, it's a not light that out the box is made to be portable so it doesn't come with D-Tap NPF battery attachment but Sokani makes one you can buy for about $50 (AMZ). This still makes out cheaper than this Godox model which is less wattage at only 60W for more money.
PS - as an option if you want to invest more...you can also use cord that comes with the Sokani adapter to connect to a V-mount battery for longer battery time. In the long run this gives you 2 different battery options NPF & V-mount.

Having reviewed both the Sokani V2 and RGB here are my thoughts between the two.
The Sokani does come out cheaper overall, but you don't necessarily get more power. The 80w that they and GVM did is a marketing stretch of whats actually going on. The LED chip in both the Sokani and Godox is a 60w class chip, but that doesn't mean you are using exactly 60w. You're actually using closer to 80w because of the AC to DC conversion that is never 100% efficient. So Sokani and GVM decided to say it is a 80w light instead of a 60w light when in reality they both give off nearly the same amount of light. There is about a 100-150lux difference but in video terms that is not noticeable.
With that aside we go to color quality in which the Sokani x60 v2 has a noticable magenta shift compared to the Godox ML60. Not the end of the world, but you'll want to compensate with a custom WB if you using the Sokani as a key light.
The Sokani fan is much louder than the ML60 at full power.
Those are the inherent differences based on my testings between the two.
That being said, what would you get for the extra $30-50 spent towards the Godox. Aside from color quality out of the gate, the Godox does play into the other godox lights whether it be panels and tube lights. So for people looking to build out a kit under one brand. Godox is getting closer to becoming a budget Aputure alternative. Sokani we have yet to see if they will expand on their lineup and have their new app work with all of it.
In theory the Godox should be able to use V-mount batteries too since it uses the Dual NPF setup. That will need to be tested to ensure the D-tap doesn't fry the Battery Management Chip.
At the end of the day, between these two LED's, It really depends on who is the buyer and where are they in their current filmmaking journey. I definitely started off with a massive group of different brand gear, but as I gain more experience I want to have one primary brand with only a couple other brands to supplement. When you get to that part of your journey it makes you life on set much easier than to have a bunch of different brands and quirks and smartphone apps.

I can DEFINTELY understand the desire for brand consistency especially as it relates to coordinating light quality and color in addition to functions within the same app. I will admit I am currently in that boat of having quite a few brands that I operate with in my kit, and switching between apps for my Neewer 660s, Sokani, Godox & Aputure lights can definitely be a pain in the a**.
I have indeed been impressed with the strides Godox seems to have made over the past few years with their lights.....but I don't know....this ML60 still has to come down a bit in price before I'd seriously consider it....I guess that will be whenever the next generation of it come out LOL!!

I can't say for sure because I do not have the Nanlite 60bi-color to give a true comparison. However I will say this, if I had to choose between the two, I would choose the Godox ML60bi based on design and uniformity to the rest of their line up.
If you already own Nanlite lights, then you would have more incentive to continue in that camp. But if you are just starting out and deciding which company to go for, Godox is the better be in my opinion.
Brightness should be the same between Nanlite and Godox as I have tested their Daylight only versions ( Compare my tests at tldrfilmmaker.com ) but UNLESS Nanlite uses a different bi-color chip that doesn't give you the same output as their normal Forza 60 daylight, then the Godox is the clear winner.
Otherwise they should essentially be the same, and in that case,the Godox is the one I would recommend for when you build out your light kit further.
Also for future reference, you do not need to comment over multiple videos for me to see it. You only need to do it once and I will get to answer it as fast as I can (Obviously eventually this won't be possible if my channel grows too big, but for now, please only comment on one video)

Softbox is technically the better way to go, all you have to do is buy the bowens adapter that I have linking in the description and then buy any bowens mount softbox up to 36" (47" might be too large).
A regular light stand will be fine, just make sure one of the leg spokes is going the same direction as your softbox. Because the ML60 is so small, weight is not going to be as big of a problem with cheaper light stands from Neewer. You can of course get the heavy duty ones (non C-stand) so that in the future you don't have to buy another light stand.
If you want more stability on the light stand you can use a sandbag or any sort of weight on the leg of the light stand.
That being said a 5 in 1 reflector is a great tool to have, you can bounce the light from the ML60 on the white side or shoot it through the center diffusion. You'll of course need another light stand to hold the reflector but it's definitely the cheaper and more versatile way to craft light.
Obviously go with what your budget allows for now. If for now you need to just buy a cheap 50 cent white poster board and have your ML60 bounce light from that back at your subject. You can do that and get nice soft light without spending a lot of money. Or buying a semi sheer white curtain will also do the same. Use these cheap methods until you can purchase the dedicated tools to help make your setup time faster. The results will nearly be the same. The only difference between cheap vs expensive is "How easy can I transport and set it up". Thats more less all there is between the options in my opinion.

Definitely a head turner! With your situation so far do you already have godox flashes and such for your photography work and even already have the S2 Bowens Bracket? If so, while these are a bit more expensive than other 60w options. It is pretty much a no compromise full kit so that you can use at home or on the go and that silence is golden. My recommendation is always just to buy one since you are slowly moving your way into video and see how you use it for your needs. From there you can determine and save up for a second one (or future model) or as you were thinking a cheap LED panel that can compliment this ML60 as a fill or hair light for the time being as you do more video work and get more revenue coming in for another COB LED.

I have ML60. My decision was made much easier, it comes with a carrying case since I do most of my shoots on location rather than in a studio. Small compact and packs sufficient lighting for most indoor settings. Not sure why there were 2 thumbs down.. 3

I have reviewed the UL150, it unfortunately does not come with a case by default which is just so weird. I've talked with Godox and told them that if something has a battery attachment and or control box, then its probably going to be bought by people that want to travel with it... give them a case!
I don't think I will be doing a review on the Godox Movelink at this time. Mainly because the new RODE GO II is my recommendation standard and I am waiting for other companies to try and compete against it at either the same or lower price. The main feature of the new RODE GO is that it has build in internal recording so that you never have to worry if you lose signal ever again. For wedding filmmakers, and any other filmmaker, this is biggest selling point for price and use of the 2.4ghz frequency.

Not a strange question at all! The SLB60w comes in (in the USA) at $350 and uses the old chassis design. This light was used around 2017 but primarily for photographers and was never marketed for videographers. The Battery was also propetary to the their strobe lights instead of using the more video common NPF and V-mount battery. The SL lineup, now that I look at it, was probably meant for photographers and never for videographers, it was a cheaper version that did not require a battery to run.
So long story short, it was a photographers constant light source.

Haha I'm not too sure if that would work because of how close the lens is to the subject and the light would be blocked by the lens if its on-camera hotshoe. You probably should just get a macro light that attaches on the front of the lens.

@@TLDR_filmmaker Had 3 lights, 2 suspended through 15mm rods rated at 1400 LUX/0.5M and a lens ring light all at full blast and yet had to film at around 6400 ISO at daytime inside the car! Just bought the Amaran 60x instead and mounted on some place on the camera cage not the camera hot shoe, that would snap!
I think I'll make a video of it later, but currently making a documentary about biting midges that are 1-3mm in size!
